Erratum: Phase II study of sequential hormonal therapy with anastrozole/exemestane in advanced and metastatic breast cancer
2005
Hormonal therapy is the preferred systemic treatment for recurrent or metastatic, post-menopausal hormone-receptor-positive breast cancer. Previous studies have shown that there is no cross-resistance between exemestane and reversible aromatase inhibitors. Exposure to hormonal therapy does not hamper later response to chemotherapy. Patients with locally advanced or metastatic, hormonal receptor positive or unknown, breast cancer were treated with oral anastrozole, until disease progression, followed by oral exemestane until new evidence of disease progression. The primary end point of the study was clinical benefit, defined as the sum of complete responses (CR), partial responses (PR) and >…
Concentrations of inhibins and activin in women undergoing stimulation with recombinant follicle-stimulating hormone for in vitro fertilization treat…
2001
To investigate the influence of human recombinant follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) on circulating serum concentrations of the ovarian proteohormones inhibin A, inhibin B, pro alpha-C, and activin A and serum levels of estradiol after down-regulation with GnRH analogue.Serum concentrations of ovarian proteohormones and estradiol.Academic clinical practice.30 women who underwent assisted reproductive techniques.Blood samples were analyzed for inhibin A, inhibin B, pro alpha-C, activin A, and estradiol during IVF treatment at points coinciding with pituitary down-regulation, stimulation with recombinant FSH, ovulatory triggering, and the luteal phase of the cycle.Activin A levels did not cha…
Increasing adiposity in normal ovulatory women affects adipocytokine expression in subcutaneous and visceral abdominal fat
2008
Abstract Objective To determine which adipocytokines are differentially expressed as a function of body mass index (BMI), to compare expression of adipocytokines in abdominal subcutaneous and omental fat, and to correlate these findings with serum levels, BMI, and parameters of insulin resistance. Methods Serum and subcutaneous (sc) and omental (om) tissue were obtained from lean and obese ovulatory women undergoing gynecologic surgery. We determined adipocytokine expression in sc versus om abdominal fat and related this to increasing BMI. Results Serum leptin was higher and adiponectin lower in overweight subjects. Adipocytokines had higher expression in sc abdominal versus om adipose tiss…
Does ovarian blood flow distinguish between ovulatory and anovulatory patients with polycystic ovary syndrome?
2003
The purpose of this study was to determine whether parameters of ovarian blood flow distinguish between women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) who ovulate and those who are anovulatory. This was a prospectively enrolled trial, carried out as a cross-sectional comparison of 12 ovulatory patients with PCOS and 20 matched subjects with classic PCOS and 10 healthy control subjects. Hormonal parameters and ovarian blood flow by color flow Doppler imaging were obtained in the early follicular phase.Characteristic elevations in luteinizing hormone (LH) and androgens were found in both groups with PCOS compared with control groups. Women with anovulatory PCOS had high insulin levels and lower Q…
Does metformin induce ovulation in normoandrogenic anovulatory women?
2004
Objective: This study was undertaken to evaluate the efficacy of metformin in women with anovulation who do not have evidence for hyperandrogenism and classic polycystic ovary syndrome. Study design: A randomized trial of metformin (1500 mg daily) and placebo in 24 anovulatory women was undertaken for 3 months. Assessments of changes in hormone levels and insulin sensitivity were carried out. Abnormal ormonal values were defined by levels exceeding the range in normal ovulatory controls. Results: Anovulatory women had normal androgen levels and luteinizing hormone but had higher serum insulin and lower insulin sensitivity compared with controls. Over 3 months, there were 16 ovulatory cycles…
Clinical and endocrine characteristics of the main polycystic ovary syndrome phenotypes
2009
Abstract OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the clinical and endocrine differences between main polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) phenotypes. DESIGN: To evaluate clinical and hormone parameters in a large group of consecutive women with PCOS diagnosed according Rotterdam criteria and divided according their phenotype. SETTING: University department of medicine. PATIENT(S): Three hundred eighty-two consecutive women with PCOS and 85 ovulatory controls. INTERVENTION(S): Evaluation of clinical and hormone parameters. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE(S): Blood levels of gonadotropins, testosterone, sex-hormone-binding globulin, dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate, 17α-hydroxyprogesterone, progesterone, glucose, and insulin,…
Consequences of long-term oral corticosteroid therapy and its side-effects in severe asthma in adults: a focused review of the impact data in the lit…
2018
This review provides an overview of the role of long-term treatment of severe asthma with oral corticosteroids (OCS) and its associated side-effects in adults. It is based on a systematic literature search conducted in MEDLINE, Embase and the Cochrane Library to identify relevant studies. After a short overview of severe asthma and its treatment we present studies showing a dose–response relationship in asthmatic patients treated with OCS and then consider by organ systems the undesired effects demonstrated in clinical and epidemiological studies in patients with OCS-dependent asthma. It was found that the risk of developing various OCS-related complications, including infections, diabetes …
Exhaled nitric oxide is associated with cyclic changes in sexual hormones
2013
Abstract Background We hypothesized that changes in the levels of sexual hormones during the menstrual cycle influence the concentration of nitric oxide in the exhaled air (FeNO) and alveolar exhaled nitric oxide (CANO). Methods Twelve healthy, non allergic women in their reproductive age (age range 25–37 years) were recruited. Subjects were studied, on alternate days, over the course of their menstrual cycle. At each visit, measurements of FeNO and CANO were performed. Progesterone and 17-β-estradiol concentrations were measured in salivary samples. Results Eight subjects completed the study. The levels of FeNO and CANO were 13 ± 4.7 pbb and 3.5 ± 1.9 pbb, respectively (mean ± SD). The mea…
Blunted cortisol response to stress in patients with eating disorders: Its association to bulimic features
2017
ObjectiveClinical research on cortisol response to stress in patients with eating disorders has provided controversial and even contradictory results. As this might be the consequence of the inclusion in the studies of heterogeneous clinical populations, 3 highly selected samples were studied. MethodsDexamethasone suppression test was performed on 15 restricting anorexia nervosa patients without history of bulimia nervosa (BN), 17 BN patients with normal weight and no history of anorexia nervosa, and 22 healthy controls. Three days later, the Trier Social Stress Test was applied, and 8 saliva samples were collected along the trial for cortisol assessment. ResultsWhen the patients were consi…
Acute abdomen due to endometriosis in a premenopausal woman taking tamoxifen.
2003
Tamoxifen exhibits agonistic properties on the uterus. We describe a premenopausal woman who, while having tamoxifen due to a diagnosis of in situ ductal carcinoma, developed endometriosis requiring surgery.
