Inhibitory Effect of Azamacrocyclic Ligands on Polyphenol Oxidase in Model and Food Systems

[EN] Enzymatic browning is one of the main problems faced by the food industry due to the enzyme polyphenol oxidase (PPO) provoking an undesirable color change in the presence of oxygen. Here, we report the evaluation of 10 different azamacrocyclic compounds with diverse morphologies as potential inhibitors against the activity of PPO, both in model and real systems. An initial screening of 10 ligands shows that all azamacrocyclic compounds inhibit to some extent the enzymatic browning, but the molecular structure plays a crucial role on the power of inhibition. Laurel extracts inhibit quorum sensing, virulence factors and biofilm of foodborne pathogens

Antimicrobial, antibiofilm, anti-Quorum sensing (QS) and virulence factors inhibitory capacity of different polarity Laurus nobilis extracts against several pathogenic microorganisms were studied. Some extracts exhibited antibiotic effect against Staphylococcus aureus multidrug-resistant strains. However, all extracts (100 µg/mL) inhibited to some extent the biofilm of most bacteria tested (until 40% for Gram-negative and 76% for Gram-positive). We previously reported that the signal transduction of cryptogein, an elicitor of defense reactions in Nicotiana tabacum cells, involves upstream protein phosphorylation. In the present study, induction of these early physiological events was further investigated with inhibitors of protein phosphatase (PP), okadaïc acid, and calyculin A. Protein phosphorylation is induced in tobacco cells by the elicitor cryptogein

Changes in plasmalemma ion fluxes were observed when tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum) cells were treated with cryptogein, a proteinaceous elicitor from Phytophthora cryptogea. A strong alkalization of the culture medium, accompanied by a leakage of potassium, was induced within a few minutes of treatment. These effects reached a maximum after 30 to 40 min and lasted for several hours. This treatment also resulted in a rapid, but transient, production of activated oxygen species. Spatial Context of Breeding Ponds and Forest Management Affect the Distribution and Population Dynamics of the Great Crested Newt

Intensive forest management and landscape degradation are threats to amphibian populations. We modelled and compared the extinction and colonization dynamics of the great crested newt in four different spatial contexts that describe landscape change from past to present and future forest landscapes in eastern Finland. In future landscape scenarios, we explored the effects of two forest use intensities with different logging rotation times. The introduction of fish into breeding ponds has been the main cause of local extinctions of the great crested newt.
