Rejoinder on: Natural Induction: An Objective Bayesian Approach

2009

Giron and Moreno. We certainly agree with Professors Giron and Moreno on the interest in sensitivity of any Bayesian result to changes in the prior. That said, we also consider of considerable pragmatic importance to be able to single out a unique, particular prior which may reasonably be proposed as the reference prior for the problem under study, in the sense that the corresponding posterior of the quantity of interest could be routinely used in practice when no useful prior information is available or acceptable. This is precisely what we have tried to do for the twin problems of the rule of succession and the law of natural induction. The discussants consider the limiting binomial versi…

Regulation of IgE production and airway reactivity by CD4(-)CD8(-) regulatory T cells

2015

The mechanisms of tolerance induction occurring in the course of allergen-specific immunotherapy have not been elucidated in full detail. Our study aimed to characterize high zone tolerance in mouse models of type I allergy and of allergic airway inflammation induced by subcutaneous sensitization of mice with high doses of the model allergen ovalbumin (OVA) without the use of adjuvant. Mice were immunized by subcutaneous injection of high doses (HD) of OVA or, for comparison, low doses (LD) of OVA in saline. HD-mice showed lower specific IgE, but augmented IgG in sera than LD-mice. Pre-treatment of mice with HD-OVA antigen-specifically inhibited IgE production subsequently induced by LD-OVA…

Influence of melt flow and temperature on erosion of refractory and deposit formation in aluminium melting furnaces

2002

The deposition and erosion mechanism in induction-channel furnace for Al melting in alumino-silicate refractory is considered. The possibility of simultaneous erosion and deposition in the same cross-section of the channel is shown. The chemical reaction model causing the erosion of refractory is proposed. The erosion process is described by chemically active aluminium oxides while the deposition is caused by chemically stable aluminium oxides. The variations of erosion and deposition in the same cross-section of the channel are explained by variation of the thickness of laminar sub-layer along the perimeter.

Amino-phosphanes in Rh(I)-catalyzed hydroformylation: new mechanistic insights using D2O as deuterium-labeling agent

2005

International audience; In previous work, we have demonstrated that the dangling amino group in amino-phosphane ligands increases the rate of Rh-catalyzed styrene hydroformylation as a function of the amino group basicity and of the distance between the P and N functions. We now report additional stereochemical and mechanistic insights resulting from new catalytic experiments performed with Rh-α-P,N catalytic systems in the presence of D2O. In addition to the expected D0 product, the formation of the β-D1 aldehyde, PhCH(CH2D)CHO was observed in all cases by 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopy, indicating that H/D exchange occurs for the rhodium-hydride complex. Minor amounts of a β-D2 product, PhCH…

Inducers of heme oxygenase-1.

2008

Heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) is an inducible rate-limiting enzyme which catalyzes group heme into carbon monoxide, iron and bilirubin. In the recent years, HO-1 expression has been reported as an important protective endogenous mechanism against physical, chemical and biological stress. In this regard, induction of this enzyme has shown beneficial effects in several pathologic conditions, such as inflammatory processes, atherosclerosis, carcinogenesis, ischemia-reperfusion systems or degenerative diseases. Complex intracellular signalling cascades mediate the expression of HO-1 in response to external stimuli, Transcription factors, as nuclear factor E2-related factor-2, activator protein-1, and…

Potential therapeutic effects of natural heme oxygenase-1 inducers in cardiovascular diseases.

2013

Significance: Many physiological effects of natural antioxidants, their extracts or their major active components, have been reported in recent decades. Most of these compounds are characterized by a phenolic structure, similar to that of α-tocopherol, and present antioxidant properties that have been demonstrated both in vitro and in vivo. Polyphenols may increase the capacity of endogenous antioxidant defenses and modulate the cellular redox state. Such effects may have wide-ranging consequences for cellular growth and differentiation. Critical Issues: The majority of in vitro and in vivo studies conducted so far have attributed the protective effect of bioactive polyphenols to their chem…

Exploring the Background: Puzzles, Afterthoughts, and Replies

2017

In this paper I review the comments, and reply to the objections, put forward in the commentaries to my essay “Pre-conventions. A fragment of the Background”, published in issues n. 30 and 33 of Revus – Journal for Constitutional Theory and Philosophy of Law. My remarks fall under the following headings: 1. The social dimension of pre-conventions; 2. Pre-conventions and ordinary habits and dispositions; 3. Whether my examples are mistaken; 4. Reasons and causes; 5. Normative facts; 6. Whether abstract entities can be causes; 7. Are pre-conventions conditions of Lewis-conventions? 8. What can pre-conventions do for legal theory? 9. Whether I discharged my argumentative burdens. Taking Aim and Hitting the Target. Some Remarks on the Aristotelian Notion of eustoichia

2018

Characterization of water mobility in dry and wetted roasted coffee using low-field proton nuclear magnetic resonance

2007

Abstract Roasted and ground coffee was studied by low-field 1 H nuclear magnetic resonance at various water contents and temperatures. The spin–spin relaxation times ( T 2 ) were measured with single pulse free induction decay (FID) and Carr–Purcell–Meiboom–Gill (CPMG) sequences. Four relaxing components were distinguished: the solid population was observed with FID sequence at T 2s ∼9 μs; the other three populations, measured with the CPMG sequence, corresponded to an apolar phase, the coffee oil, and two polar phases. The two polar populations, observed at T 2m ∼6 ms and ∼27 ms (for coffee with 50% water content at 90 °C) were attributed to water in cell wall polymers and in water filling…

Isotopic Effect on the Kinetics of the Belousov-Zhabotinsky Reaction

2007

In this work we present results about the deuterium isotope effect on the global kinetics of a Belousov-Zhabotinsky reaction in batch conditions. A nonlinear dependence of the Induction Period upon the percentage of deuterated reactants was found. The isotopic effect on the bromination reaction of malonic acid was evaluated.
