Membrane-Bound F1 ATPase from Micrococcus Sp. ATCC 398E. Purification and Characterization by Affinity Chromatography
1976
A chemically reactive ATP analogue, 6-[(3-carboxy-4-nitrophenyl)thio]-9-β-D-ribofuranosylpurine 5′-triphosphate (Nbs6ITP) has been synthesized. It has the ability to form stable thioether bonds between the 6-position of the purine ring and aliphatic mercapto groups. The nucleotide moiety of the reagent has been covalently bound to agarose, via iminobispropylamine and N-acetyl-homocysteine as spacer with the purpose of producing an affinity chromatography material. The affinity matrix binds solubilized F1 ATPase from a crude extract of Micrococcus sp. membranes. Afterwards the enzyme can be selectively eluted from the column at a defined ATP concentration. This method is superior to the conv…
On the admissibility of the space L_{0}(A, X) of vector-valued measurable functions
2013
We prove the admissibility of the space L_0(A,X) of vector-valued measurable functions determined by real-valued finitely additive set functions defined on algebras of sets.

On the use of the electromechanical impedance technique for the assessment of dental implant stability: Modeling and experimentation
2014
We propose the electromechanical impedance technique to monitor the stability of dental implants. The technique consists of bonding one wafer-type piezoelectric transducers to the implant system. When subjected to an electric field, the transducer induces structural excitations which, in turn, affect the transducer’s electrical admittance. The hypothesis is that the health of the bone surrounding the implant affects the sensor’s admittance. A three-dimensional finite element model of a transducer bonded to the abutment of a dental implant placed in a host bone site was created to simulate the progress of the tissue healing that occurs after surgery. The healing was modeled by changing the …
Cytomegalovirus Misleads Its Host by Priming of CD8 T Cells Specific for an Epitope Not Presented in Infected Tissues
2003
Cytomegaloviruses (CMVs) code for several proteins that inhibit the presentation of antigenic peptides to CD8 T cells. Although the molecular mechanisms of CMV interference with the major histocompatibility complex class I pathway are long understood, surprisingly little evidence exists to support a role in vivo. Here we document the first example of the presentation of an antigenic peptide being blocked by a CMV immune evasion protein in organs relevant to CMV disease. Although this Db-restricted peptide, which is derived from the antiapoptotic protein M45 of murine CMV (mCMV), is classified as an immunodominant peptide based on response magnitude and long-term memory, adoptive transfer of…
Adsorption of atomic and molecular oxygen on the LaMnO3(001) surface: ab initio supercell calculations and thermodynamics.
2008
We present and discuss the results of ab initio DFT plane-wave supercell calculations of the atomic and molecular oxygen adsorption and diffusion on the LaMnO(3) (001) surface which serves as a model material for a cathode of solid oxide fuel cells. The dissociative adsorption of O(2) molecules from the gas phase is energetically favorable on surface Mn ions even on a defect-free surface. The surface migration energy for adsorbed O ions is found to be quite high, 2.0 eV. We predict that the adsorbed O atoms could penetrate the electrode first plane when much more mobile surface oxygen vacancies (migration energy of 0.69 eV) approach the O ions strongly bound to the surface Mn ions. The form…
Retention of Vanadium(V), Molybdenum(VI) and Tungsten(VI) by Kaolin
1993
Abstract The ability of kaolin (approximately H2Al2Si2O8 · H2O), a well known clay mineral constituent, to retain V(V) andMo(VI) species from 10−5 and 10−4 M solutions, and W(VI) species from 10−4 M solutions was investigated in the pH range 2–7.5 using a solid/liquid ratio 1:100 (w:v). The equilibration time in the adsorption studies was 72 h, and the shaking time in the desorption studies was 17 h. 0.02 M KCl was used as ionic medium and desorbing liquid. V(V), Mo(VI) and W(VI) were all retained by kaolin to some extent, and the amounts of the elements which could be washed away from kaolin with 0.02 M KCl were very small. The pH dependence of the adsorption was considerable: when added a…
New adsorbents for thymidylate synthase affinity chromatography
1988
New affinity adsorbents, intended for chromatography of thymidylate synthase (EC 2.1.1.45) from different sources, consisting of p-[N-[(2-amino-4-hydroxy-6-quinazolinyl)-methyl]-N-2-propynylamino]benzoyl-γ-[α-(3-carboxypropylamino)]glutamyl-glutamyl immobilized either on macroporous copolymer of acrylonitrile and n-butyl acrylate or on macroporous polymer of acrylonitrile itself, both crosslinked with divinylbenzene and having aminoethyl groups, were obtained. Both adsorbents were found to be effective in dUMP-dependent binding of thymidylate synthase from regenerating rat liver.
Effect of fall direction on the lower hip fracture risk in athletes with different loading histories : A finite element modeling study in multiple si…
2022
Physical loading makes bones stronger through structural adaptation. Finding effective modes of exercise to improve proximal femur strength has the potential to decrease hip fracture risk. Previous proximal femur finite element (FE) modeling studies have indicated that the loading history comprising impact exercises is associated with substantially higher fracture load. However, those results were limited only to one specified fall direction. It remains thus unclear whether exercise-induced higher fracture load depends on the fall direction. To address this, using magnetic resonance images of proximal femora from 91 female athletes (mean age 24.7 years with >8 years competitive career) and …
A single acute dose of pinitol from a naturally-occurring food ingredient decreases hyperglycaemia and circulating insulin levels in healthy subjects.
2013
A limited amount of research suggests that oral ingestion of pinitol (3-O-methyl-d-chiro-inositol) positively influences glucose tolerance in humans. This study assessed the effects of different doses of pinitol supplementation on glucose tolerance, insulin sensitivity and plasma pinitol concentrations. Thirty healthy subjects underwent two one-day trials in which they consumed a nutritive beverage (Fruit Up®) containing 2.5, 4.0 or 6.0g of pinitol and a corresponding placebo equivalent in both energy and carbohydrates. Blood samples were collected frequently over the 240-min test period. The pinitol-enriched beverage reduced serum glucose and insulin at 45 and 60min, but only at a dose of …
