Water Sorption on Mesoporous Aluminosilicate MCM-41

Characterization of the interaction of water with the highly ordered mesoporous solid MCM-41 (pore diameter ∼2.5 nm) is undertaken with the aid of several techniques (adsorption gravimetry, X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and controlled rate-evolved gas analysis). The relatively complex water-MCM-41 interactions are characterized by a type V isotherm indicating an initial repulsive character followed by a capillary condensation step of the adsorbate. This highlights both hydrophobic and hydrophilic properties of this potential model mesoporous adsorbent.

DICHROISM IN ANGLE-RESOLVED PHOTOEMISSION FROM Pt(111)

The angular dependence of the circular dichroism in photoemission from Pt(111) was investigated for excitation with VUV and soft X-ray radiation. VUV excitation was used to probe band structure and the circular dichroism for valence band emission. The measurements are compared to full relativistic single step photoemission calculations. XPS was used to investigate the circular dichroism in emission from the 4f core level. In this case, the dichroism is induced by photoelectron diffraction. First results from single step core level calculations are compared to the experimental observations.

Aperiodic Diffract: Study of diffraction gratings

In this work we introduce a virtual laboratory, APERIODIC DIFFRACT, developed in Matlab GUI (Graphical User Interface) as an informatics tool for teaching the diffractive properties of aperiodic gratings. This GUI allows the student to  generate aperiodic sequences by iterating and lets to study the spectra for different iterating orders.<br /><br />

Toward new organic/inorganic superlattices: Keggin polyoxometalates in Langmuir and Langmuir-Blodgett films

The effect of Keggin heteropolyoxotungstates (XW12O40n- with X = H2, P, Si, B or Co) on Langmuir films has been studied for monolayers of DODA (dimethyldioctadecylammonium) and DPPC (1,2-dipalmitoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphorylcholine). Marked modifications of the compression isotherms have been observed when the Keggin anions were dissolved in the subphase:  this demonstrates that the polyanions interact with the monolayer. Langmuir−Blodgett (LB) films have been readily obtained from these systems (even with DPPC) for a particular range in polyanion concentration. Epitaxial growth and thermoelectric properties of TiNiSn and Zr0.5Hf0.5NiSn thin films

Abstract Due to their exceptional thermoelectric properties Half-Heusler alloys like MNiSn (M = Ti,Zr,Hf) have moved into focus. The growth of single crystalline thin film TiNiSn and Zr 0.5 Hf 0.5 NiSn by dc magnetron sputtering is reported. Seebeck and resistivity measurements were performed and their dependence on epitaxial quality is shown. Seebeck coefficient, specific resistivity and power factor for Zr 0.5 Hf 0.5 NiSn at room temperature were measured to be 63 μV K − 1 , 14.1 μΩ m and 0.28 mW K − 2  m − 1 , respectively. Defects at the TiO2(100) surface probed by resonant photoelectron diffraction.

We report photoelectron diffraction (PED) experiments of weakly sub-stoichiometric TiO 2 (100) rutile surfaces. Apart from standard core-level PED from the Ti-2p3/2 line, we have studied valence band PED from the defect induced Ti-3d states in the insulating band gap. For maximum yield, the latter were resonantly excited at the Ti-2p absorption edge. The PED patterns have been analyzed within the forward scattering approximation as well as by comparison with simulated PED patterns obtained in multiple scattering calculations. The analysis shows that the defect induced Ti-3d charge is mainly located on the second layer Ti atoms. © 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Structural characterization of TiNxOy/TiO2 single crystalline and nanometric multilayers grown by LP-MOCVD on (110)TiO2

2001

TiO2/TiNxOy superlattices were grown by Low Pressure-Metal-Organic Vapor Phase Epitaxy (LP-MOVPE) technique at deposition temperatures ranking from 650 to 750°C. The growth was performed on top of TiO2(110) rutile substrates. Intense peaks observed in the X-rays rocking curves and θ-2θ diffraction patterns show the presence of crystalline epilayers. The TiNxOy layers were grown in a (200) cubic structure on the (110) quadratic TiO2 epilayer structure. Transmission electron microscopy confirmed the XRD results and showed the formation of periodic and well structured epilayers.

Preparation of photocatalytic brookite thin films

Pure brookite films were deposited from a brookite dispersion obtained by peptizing a mixture brookite–rutile prepared by thermolysis of TiCl4 in a HCl solution. The films were characterised by X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy. The photoactivity of the samples was tested by using the photo-oxidation of 2-propanol in gas–solid regime as a probe reaction. The brookite films efficiently degraded 2-propanol under UV illumination.

Holographic recording of surface relief gratings in tolyle-based azobenzene oligomers

Abstract Holographic recording of surface relief gratings (SRG) in tolyle-based azobenzene oligomer films have been carried out at 514.5 nm. It was experimentally studied by spectroscopic and AFM methods. The maximum surface modulation amplitude was 35 nm. SRG formation is explained by the mean-field model and by the photodegradation of chromophores enabling the directional mass transport as the result of trans–cis transformations. The conclusion is made that SRG are stable but the diffraction efficiency (DE) changes are due to the complementary decaying amplitude-phase gratings.
