Promoting inter‐professional teamwork and learning – the case of a surgical operating theatre
2010
Hospitals, and surgical operating theatres (OTs) in particular, are environments in which inter‐professional teamwork and learning are essential to secure patient safety and effective practice. However, it has been revealed in many studies that inter‐professional collaborative work in hospital organisations faces many challenges and constraints. In this study we examine surgical operations as participatory practices from the perspective of inter‐professional learning and cooperation. We ask what kinds of shared practices enable learning and collaboration within the surgical operating team. We used an ethnographic approach to data collection including observations and interviews of surgical …
Digital Learning Interventions in Higher Education: A Scoping Review.
2020
Abstract This scoping review was undertaken to synthesize and describe research related to digital learning interventions in higher education, focusing on technological outcomes. Five electronic databases were searched, and 86 articles were included in the review. The data related to positive and negative technological outcomes and authors’ suggestions were analyzed using inductive content analysis. The articles represented six disciplines across six continents and included quantitative (n = 65), qualitative (n = 3), and mixed-methods (n = 18) intervention studies. For positive technological outcomes, digital formats of learning were considered effective and participatory forms of learning …
Analysing participatory video through the capability approach. A case study in Quart de Poblet (Valencia, Spain)
2017
The aim of this paper is to analyse participatory video as a participatory action research method through the lenses of the capability approach. In order to do this, we used a participatory video experience that took place in the municipality of Quart de Poblet (Valencia, Spain) from February to March 2014. The participants were 11 young people between 16 and 24 years of age, severely affected by the economic crisis that has hit Spain in recent years. To develop our analysis, we introduced the participatory video as a technique and a process within the participatory action research methods. Then, we analysed the participatory process to verify the extent to which it had contributed to expan…
Developing mindful organizing in teams: a participation climate is not enough, teams need to feel safe to challenge their leaders
2020
ABSTRACT Mindful organizing (also known as collective mindfulness) is a collective capability that allows teams to anticipate and swiftly recover from unexpected events. This collective capability is especially relevant in high-risk environments where reliability in performance is of utmost importance. In this paper, we build on current mindful organizing theory by showing how two front-line communication and participatory conditions (perceived safety for upward dissent and climate for employee engagement) interact to predict mindful organizing. We shed light on the controversy around mindful organizing’s effect on team’s subjective experience at work by showing that it leads to…
The Effects of Right-Wing Populist Communication on Emotions and Cognitions toward Immigrants
2018
The persuasiveness of right-wing populist communication has become a widely discussed topic; it is often assumed that such messages might foster anti-immigrant attitudes among citizens. The present study explores the effects of the different components of right-wing populist communication—anti-immigrant messages, populist content, and populist style—on attitudes toward immigrants. By combining a media content analysis ( N = 605 articles) with a panel survey ( N = 1,968) in metropolitan areas of four Western European countries (France, Germany, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom), this study analyzes how citizens’ attitudes toward immigrants are influenced by the right-wing populist commun…
Testing the participatory education evaluation concept in a national context
2012
Abstract The article focuses on the realisation of participatory evaluation (PE) in national educational evaluation activity. The realisation of PE is examined by adapting the Daigneault and Jacob model (2009 ; originally Cousins & Whitmore, 1998 ) to five national-level educational evaluations carried out in Finland. According to the chosen frame of reference, self-evaluation regarding the realisation of these five evaluations as well as the analysis of reports that are yielded from the evaluations is used as the research method. PE was realised at a general level in the Finnish national level educational evaluations, but during the process there were considerable differences between the s…
Citizen journalism and social innovation. Digital platforms for qualitative implementation of participatory journalism
2022
The power of the media, internet, social networks and sharing platforms system, together with the pervasiveness of digital tools in everyone’s life, have made communication an ever more articulated, and increasingly complex field. In addition to accelerating the dissemination of content and information, these tools have opened the door to extensive participatory information processes. The article takes some emblematic case studies of participatory journalism platforms that can make a valuable contribution to setting in motion co-design processes in the news world. Within this framework, an attempt will be made to frame a scenario in which design can find its own place in a planning space ye…

New Roles for Media in the Western Balkans
2017
After almost 20 years of political instability and ongoing conflicts in the Western Balkans, the region is still haunted by the past, and there is an ongoing synergy of influence between media and the political sector. Media in this region have frequently been criticized for fueling conflicts, instigating ethnic hatred and taking political sides. This article suggests a new research agenda in the practice of transitional journalism in this part of Southeastern Europe. This research strand combines elements from troubled pasts, war reporting, peace journalism and issues of transitional justice. This article analyzes how journalists in the Western Balkans consider the roles of journalism in t…
The use of blogs as social media tools of political communication : citizen journalism and public opinion 2.0
2019
In recent years, the political arena has been transformed into a space of public debate, a phenomenon which is both evident, yet hitherto unparalleled. A new range of digital social communication tools framed within the Web 2.0 era, with the blog often proving the tool of choice, has displaced the traditional pre-eminence of the communication scenario, as previously used by the mass media, thanks to a series of more interactive, diverse and credible dynamics which place the user at the very heart of the political discussion process and facilitates processes of social mobilization and collective civic action. This study takes the above situation as its point of departure and guiding principl…
