Everyday English at work - does it work? : evaluation of an English language course
2004
Kurssiarvioinnista on tehty paljon tutkimuksia, mutta pääosa alan kirjallisuudesta keskittyy kurssiarviointiin yleensä. Kielikurssien arviointiin keskittyvää kirjallisuutta on huomattavasti vähemmän.
Towards a fun and playful model for young children's foreign language learning
2017
This thesis proposes a model for young children's foreign language learning with a focus on fun and playfulness as well as emotional needs. The model is based on a wide range of literature on children's development, education, and foreign language learning specifically. Foreign language teachers are surveyed to discover their current practices. This data is analysed and compared to the proposed model. The study finds many teachers already follow many of the principles of the proposed model in their everyday practice. The use of fun activities as well as an awareness of learners' emotions are prevalent. Communication and technical aspects of language are also major themes common across teach…
Letting Art Teach Aesthetics, Math and Language
2020
This papers presents a practical work model as well as an educational theory discussion on the status and potential of art work in teaching and learning math in early childhood education. The central idea is to let the child’s free creative art activity reveal, or “teach”, whatever mathematical thinking was inherent in the creative process. Paying careful attention to art and math adequate language in “meta talks” with children about their art work, is found to be a rich tool in enhancing the young learner’s development of aesthetic, numeric and linguistic literacies in gainful interplay. A field study in preschool teacher education is reviewed, including a mapping of Alan Bishop’s [2] math…
Linguistic Diversity as a Problem and a Resource – Multilingualism in European and Finnish Policy Documents
2012
Societies in Europe and across the world are under constant pressure to cope with increasing multilingualism and multiculturalism. This development has its roots in different global and local societal and economic processes. On the one hand, globalization is putting pressure on the economy in that more varied language resources are needed in society. On the other hand, immigration is constantly on the increase, giving rise to what Vertovec (2006) has termed super-diversity, a ‘condition distinguished by a dynamic interplay of variables among an increased number of new, small and scattered, multiple-origin, transnationally connected, socio-economically differentiated and legally stratified i…

New Materialist Explorations into Language Education
2023
This open access book analyzes language education through a socio-material framework. The authors revisit their position as researchers by decentering themselves and humans in general from the main focus of research activities and giving way to the materialities that are agentive but often overlooked parts of our research contexts and processes. Through this critical posthumanist realism, they are able to engage in research that sees society as an ethical interrelationship between humans and the material world and explore the socio-materialities of language education from the perspectives of material agency, spatial and embodied materiality, and human and non-human assemblages. Each chapter…
Rewilding Language Education: Emergent Assemblages and Entangled Actions
2021
Integrating concepts and techniques from ethnomethodology and sociomaterialism, this article investigates the observable material processes involving human action and place‐based contexts of language use enabled by locative media. The focal pedagogical intervention utilized mobile augmented reality (AR) activities, the development of which was inspired by research on learning ‘in the wild.’ Applying the principle of reverse engineering, we introduce a pedagogical approach termed ‘rewilding’ for its emphasis on designing supportive conditions for goal‐directed interaction outside of classrooms. Three instances of AR materials use are presented from an out‐of‐class activity associated with un…

Powinności kształcenia językowego w L1 a niektóre aspekty lingwistyki poststrukturalistycznej
2022
The article is a part of the discussion on language education in L1 in a modern school. The vision presented in it is based on poststructuralist linguistic concepts, in which language is perceived in a non-systemic way, giving it a humanistic, anthropological-subjective, and cognitive dimension. The author discusses three good practice proposals as examples that fit into the presented didactic concept: in the first, writing character profiles was considered a story that interprets oneself and the world, in the second dictionary-phraseological exercises were assigned the function of changing the perception of reality, the third is an attempt to create a methodology based on the achievements …
