The Association of Basal Insulin Glargine and/or n-3 Fatty Acids With Incident Cancers in Patients With Dysglycemia

2014

OBJECTIVE Epidemiologic studies linking insulin glargine and glucose-lowering therapies to cancers and n-3 fatty acids to cancer prevention have not been confirmed. We aimed to assess the effect of insulin glargine and n-3 fatty acids on incident cancers within the context of the ORIGIN (Outcome Reduction with Initial Glargine Intervention) trial. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS The ORIGIN trial is an international, long-term, randomized two-by-two factorial study comparing insulin glargine with standard care and n-3 fatty acids with placebo (double blind) in people with dysglycemia at high risk for cardiovascular events. The primary outcome measure (cancer substudy) was the occurrence of any …

A late diagnosis of aortic coarctation began as an acute coronary syndrome

2014

Abstract Aortic coarctation accounts the 5%–10% of congenital heart disease. It is usually diagnosed during childhood but the postductal form is most common in adults and may be diagnosed incidentally in the context of investigation for hypertension. The age of correction is the most important factor for the relief of hypertension and long-term survival. We describe a case of a 63-year-old man, came to our emergency room for acute coronary syndrome. Cardiac catheterization with right femoral artery access was performed but for many difficulties during the introduction of catheters was therefore performed aortography that showed an interruption "a cul de sac" at the level of the descending t…

State of the Art-High-Sensitivity Troponins in Acute Coronary Syndromes.

2020

In cases of suspected acute coronary syndrome (ACS), rapid and accurate diagnosis is essential to establish effective evidence-based medical treatment. Patients' history, clinical examination, 12-lead electrocardiogram, and cardiac biomarkers are cornerstones in initial management. Since high-sensitivity cardiac troponins were established, they have markedly expedited and revolutionized rule-in and rule-out pathways of patients with ACS and changed our everyday clinical practice. Thus, they have become an indispensable tool in daily routine in emergency units. This review focuses on historical and contemporary standards in laboratory biomarkers of myocardial injury and discusses their impli…

Impact of Prophylactic CD8-Depleted Donor-Lymphocyte Infusions After Allogeneic Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation and Alemtuzumab Mediated T-Ce…

2011

Abstract Abstract 4109 We have previously demonstrated that the application of CD8-depleted donor-lymphocyte infusions (DLI) is feasible after reduced-intensity conditioning and in vivo T-cell depletion by alemtuzumab. DLI overcome slow lymphocyte recovery associated with alemtuzumab-administration and improve anti-infectious immunity and reliably convert a decreasing T-cell chimerism (Meyer et al. Blood 2007 & BMT 2010). Here we provide clinical follow up data of 117 patients with different hematological diseases and a median observation time of 1 year (range, 1–86 months) post hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT). The majority of patients either suffered from an acute leukem…

Social media use to improve communication on children and adolescent’s health: the role of the Italian Paediatric Society influencers

2021

Abstract Background Fake news on children’s and adolescent health are spreading. Internet availability and decreasing costs of media devices are contributing to an easy access to technology by families. Public health organizations are working to contrast misinformation and promote scientific communication. In this context, a new form of communication is emerging social media influencers. Aim of this study is to evaluate the role of paediatric influencers (PI) in communicating information about children and adolescents’ health. Materials and methods A group of PI was enrolled from December 2019 to January 2020 by a scientific commission nominated by the Italian Paediatric Society (SIP). PI w…

Physiological and Nutritional Roles of PPAR across Species.

2013

There has been a tremendous amount of information produced on peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors (PPARs). The interest in PPARs was originally driven largely by their role in hypolipidemia and hepatocarcinogenesis, but it soon became evident that they played important roles in the metabolic syndrome and overall health of organisms including regeneration of tissues, differentiation, insulin signaling, overall lipid metabolism, and immune response (reviewed in [1–7]). From a nutritional standpoint, the PPARs are of extreme importance because of their ability to bind and be activated by long-chain fatty acids and their metabolites. Therefore, the PPARs are recognized as ideal candidat…

Craniopharyngiomas in Children - Experience of Consecutive 152 Operated Cases

2020

Context Craniopharyngiomas (CPH) are benign tumors, rarely encountered in children, representing 5-6% of all intracranial tumors. Objective This study aimed to analyze the surgical management and quality of life in a series of CPH pediatric cases. Design This was a multicenter study performed over a 25-year period (1994 - 2019) in Bucharest. Subjects and methods 152 children (0-17 years old) were treated for CPH. Preoperative manifestations were intracranial hypertension, endocrine dysfunction, visual impairment, ataxia, intellectual performance decrease. Results Considering all surgical approaches used, we advocate for pterional approach to best fit in CPH. We achieved gross-total removal …

Treatment guidelines of metastatic colorectal cancer in older patients from the French Society of Geriatric Oncology (SoFOG)

2020

International audience; Background: Several guidelines dedicated to metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC) are available. Since 2013 no recent guidelines are specifically dedicated to older patients and based on a systematic review. Materials and methods: A multidisciplinary Task Force with digestive oncologists, geriatricians and methodologists from the SoFOG was formed in 2016 to update recommendations on medical treatment of mCRC based on a systematic review of publications from 2000 to 2018. Search strategy has followed a standardized protocol from the formulation of clinical questions and definition of a search algorithm to the selection of complete articles for recommendations. A meta-review of literature reviews assessing the capacity of patients with severe mental disorders to make decisions about their healthcare

2020

Abstract Background Determining the mental capacity of psychiatric patients for making healthcare related decisions is crucial in clinical practice. This meta-review of review articles comprehensively examines the current evidence on the capacity of patients with a mental illness to make medical care decisions. Methods Systematic review of review articles following PRISMA recommendations. PubMed, Scopus, CINAHL and PsycInfo were electronically searched up to 31 January 2020. Free text searches and medical subject headings were combined to identify literature reviews and meta-analyses published in English, and summarising studies on the capacity of patients with serious mental illnesses to m…

Differential effects of sex hormones on peri- and endocortical bone surfaces in pubertal girls.

2005

Context: The role of sex steroids in bone growth in pubertal girls is not yet clear. Bone biomarkers are indicators of bone metabolic activity, but their value in predicting bone quality has not been studied in growing girls. Objective: This study examines the association of sex hormones and bone markers with bone geometry and density in pubertal girls. Design: The study was designed as a 2-yr longitudinal study in pubertal girls. Measurements were performed at baseline and at 1and 2-yr follow-ups. Setting: The study was conducted in a university laboratory. Participants: A total of 258 10- to 13-yr-old healthy girls at the baseline participated. Methods:Peripheralquantitativecomputedtomogr…
