The development of L2 Italian morphosyntax in adult learners with limited literacy
2020
Low literacy and schooling rates are a significant factor among adults in the recent migration towards Europe, including Italy. However, in Italy linguistic research has paid very little attention to the relationship between newcomers’ language learning processes and (low) schooling and literacy. This lack of attention to the role of home language(s) literacy – and, more in general, to the sociolinguistic variables characterising the condition of migration – is problematic at a theoretical level. As it assumes the role of literacy as the main research question, the investigation on the acquisition of morphosyntax by adult learners with limited literacy, which is described in the volume, rep…
Daudzveidīgu aktivitāšu nozīme angļu valodas apguves veicināšanā 5 gadīgiem bērniem

Diplomdarba nosaukums: Daudzveidīgu aktivitāšu nozīme angļu valodas apguves veicināšanā 5 gadīgiem bērniem. Diplomdarba autore: Diāna Elizabete Makveja Diplomdarba zinātniskās vadītājs: Mg. paed. Sandra Kalniņa Diplomdarba saturs: 53 lpp, 10 attēli, 3 tabulas, 4 pielikumi, analizētas 65 literatūras vienības. Pētījuma mērķis: teorētiski izpētīt, pamatot un praktiski pārbaudīt daudzveidīgu aktivitāšu nozīmi angļu valodas apguves veicināšanā 5 gadīgiem bērniem. Diplomdarba teorētiskā daļa balstās uz vairāku autoru atziņām (Lieģeniece, 1999, Svence, 1999, Baltušīte, 2000, Cameron, 2001, Marcos, 2001, Piažē, 2002, Vigotskis, 2002, O’Grady, 2005,Vos, 2008, Ellis, 2008, Brice, 2013, Lang, 2014, Ch…
Uzdevumi sākumskolas skolēnu angļu valodas izrunas pilnveidei
2020
Bridging the gap between research and practice : using phenomenographic findings to develop training for career practitioners
2021
AbstractThis study contends that phenomenography offers both a useful research method and practical tools for developing education and training for career practitioners. After introducing the basic principles of phenomenography, the study reviews previous research on its potential in developing pedagogical practices. It explores how the phenomenographic findings were utilized to design an online skills training programme for career practitioners. The study finds that phenomenographic research serves three practical pedagogical purposes: (1) revealing how learners understand certain concepts or phenomena, (2) elucidating how these understandings differ; and (3) identifying critical aspects i…

Promoting multilingual communicative competence through multimodal academic learning situations
2016
This paper presents information on the factors affecting the development of multilingual and multicultural communicative competence in interactive multimodal learning environments in an academic context. The interdisciplinary course in multilingual interaction offered at the University of Jyväskylä aims to enhance students’ competence in multilingual and multicultural academic communication by promoting the use of their entire linguistic repertoire in various learning situations. Throughout the course, we observed the students’ engagement in multilingual and multicultural activities. These observations suggest that simultaneous use of multiple languages in synchronous and asynchronous learn…
Learning paths on elementary university courses in Finnish as a second language
2015
Along with the growing degree of internationalisation, Finnish university education needs to address issues related to learning and teaching Finnish as a second language. From the perspective of teaching Finnish and related pedagogical development, it is essential to recognise when, where and for which purposes learners need Finnish at the various stages of the language acquisition process. This article focuses on the learning paths of three international students who studied Finnish on a one-term elementary course at the University of Jyvaskyla Language Centre. The article is based on a socio-cultural and ecological view on language learning and teaching. The data consist of learning diary…
Tracking down phrasal verbs: the case of up and down
2016
Since the frequency of phrasal verbs is register-specific, it is essential for L2 learners to be exposed to the most productive phrasal verbs in their field of study. Thus, English for Police learners should become familiar and practise the most recurrent phrasal verbs in the context of crime and police investigative work. In this study we determine the frequency and meaning extensions of phrasal verbs with the particles up and down in a spoken corpus of English for the Police on the basis of which we also generate teaching materials for L2 trainee police officers. This research extends McCarthy and O’Dell’s (2004) scope of analysis by encompassing not only phrasal verbs related to criminal…

Pronunciation Learning Strategy Chains: A Qualitative Approach
2014
Language learning is a daunting process frequently enhanced by a number of factors, for example, language learning strategies deployed in an orchestrated manner (Oxford 1990). Similarly, pronunciation learning may be supported by effective strategies used either separately or in logically combined chains. However, little attention has been given so far to the strategies L2 learners employ when learning the target language pronunciation, not to mention pronunciation learning strategy chains. Hence, there have been a limited number of empirical investigations into pronunciation learning strategies (PLS) in general and in particular the ones following the qualitative design (cf. Bukowski 2004;…
