Exploring and Reshaping Learners’ Beliefs About the Usefulness of Corrective Feedback : A Sociocultural Perspective

A number of studies have shown that learners’ beliefs about the usefulness of corrective feedback for improving their L2 (a second or a foreign language) use influences the extent to which learners can utilize that same feedback. It seems, then, that changing some of these beliefs could benefit the L2 learning process. The present article reports on two small-scale studies, both drawing on a sociocultural perspective on the development of beliefs. An ethnographic study of language socialization and choice in a first and second grade English medium classroom in Finland

In this ethnographic study of language socialization I investigate how a monolingual language norm is instituted, maintained, monitored, resisted, and subverted by participants in a first and second grade English medium class in Finland. In this setting language choice and use are an integral part of membership in this class. This study foregrounds the social implications of managing a monolingual norm by examining student agency, resistance, the achievement of voice, the uptake of a teacher-like discourse, and the practice of repair. L’enjeu de cet article réside dans la mesure du rôle des capacités motivationnelles des étudiants sur la réussite universitaire, en adoptant une démarche quantitative et intégrative. À cette fin, les données récoltées sur des étudiants en première année de licence de trois filières permettent de contrôler un ensemble de facteurs relatifs aux caractéristiques socio-démographiques et scolaires des étudiants. Diplomdarbs tika izstrādāts, lai padziļinātu izpratni par “Es protu apgalvojumu” izmantošanu kā pašvadītu mācīšanās prasmju novērtēšanas instrumenta faktisko pielietojumu un lai noteiktu, vai tas palīdz uzlabot skolēnu angļu valodas sasniegumus. Diplomdarba mērķis bija izpētīt, kā pašvadītas mācīšanās “Es protu apgalvojumus” var izmantot angļu valodas stundās, lai uzlabotu skolēnu angļu valodas sniegumu 4. klasē. Artikkelissa tarkastellaan sitä, miten thainkielisten suomenoppijoiden (N=10) ensikielen tunnistaminen vaikuttaa Yleisten kielitutkintojen (YKI) suomen arvioijien (N=44) käsityksiin kielitaidosta ja millaisia käsityksiä arvioijilla on thainkielisten suullisesta kielitaidosta. Artikkelin aineisto liittyy Rikkinäistä suomea-hankkeeseen, jossa thainkieliset oli yksi tutkimukseen osallistuneesta ensikielen ryhmittymästä. Vēlme pilnveidot angļu valodas mācību programmu ir mudinājusi izmēģināt dažādas pedagoģiskās pieejas, lai uzlabotu pirmsskolas vecuma bērnu angļu valodas vārdu krājuma apguvi; kā viens no risinājumiem ir rasts multi-sensoro uzdevumu izmantojums angļu valodas stundās.
