Studies on electron-beam irradiation and plastic deformation of medical-grade ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene

Abstract Separated and combined electron-beam irradiation and plastic deformation effects on the structures of ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) were studied. It was found that the concentration of carbonyl (ketones, esters and peresters), hydroxyl and vinyl groups increases with the growing dose of adsorbed electrons. It also tends to exhibit a slight increase in the melting point and crystallinity of the samples. A mechanical stress in the polymer was found to accelerate radiation-induced degradation. Guest-Induced Folding and Self-Assembly of Conformationally Adaptive Macrocycles into Nanosheets and Nanotubes

A conformationally adaptive macrocycle is presented, namely zorb[4]arene, which exists in multiple conformations in the uncomplexed state. The binding cavity of zorb[4]arene is concealed, either due to a collapsed conformation or by self-inclusion. The zorb[4]arene with long alkyl chains manifests itself with surprisingly low melting point and thus exist as an oil at room temperature. Binding of a guest molecule induces the folding and conformational rigidity of zorb[4]arene and leads to well-defined three-dimensional structures, which can further self-assemble into nanosheets or nanotubes upon solvent evaporation, depending on guest molecules and the conformations they can induce.

Es werden zwei Wege zur Darstellung von Oligophenylenen mit einer o-Winkelung beschrieben. Als Ausgangssubstanzen dienen der Mono-enolather des Cyclohexandion (1,2) bzw. Cyclohexenoxyd. Die Darstellung des Mono-enolathylathers des Cyclohexandion (1,2) wird beschrieben. Durch Oxydation nach OPPENAUER mit Chinon als Wasserstoffacceptor konnen die als Zwischenprodukte der Oligophenylene erhaltenen Cyclohexanolderivate in 90%iger Ausbeute in die benotigten Ketone ubergefuhrt werden. Es wird uber die Herstellung von kristallisierbaren Polystyrolen durch Polymerisation von Styrol mit natriumorganischen Verbindungen bei niedrigen Temperaturen berichtet. Anteile der Polymeren sind rontgenkristallin und haben Schmelzpunkte von uber 200°C. Dieser kristallisierbare Anteil nimmt mit fallender Polymerisationstemperatur zu. Bei konstanter Polymerisationtemperatur fallen die Viskositatszahlen der Polymeren mit steigender Katalysatorkonzentration. A branched polyethylene with broad molecular weight distribution was separated into a series of fractions by fractional precipitation from dilute solution. The fractions were characterized by viscometric and density measurements, IR-spectroscopy and calorimetry. The methyl group content and the density turned out as largely constant. Molecular weight effects show up in the melting behaviour. The main range of melting and the end of the melting curve shift to lower temperatures with decreasing molecular weight. Fast Solution Precursor Synthesis of the 2223 Phase: the Role of Lead in the Reaction Pathway

ABSTRACTValuable mechanistic information, about the reaction pathway in the formation of the 2223 phase, has been obtained by the use of a solution synthesis route. The presence of lead in the starting mixture has remarkable effects on the nature and stability of the different intermediates: i) the grain size and morphology of Bi2CuO4 is severely changed, ii) calcium carbonate is partially decomposed to yield the calcium plumbate, iii) the 2201 phase results stabilized against the formation of the collapsed phase Bi17Sr16Cu7O49-δ, iv) the melting point of the intermediate 2212 is lowered by about 10 °C. Schrittweise synthesen und eigenschaften einiger cyclopentamerer aus methylenverbrückten (5-alkyl-2-hydroxy-1,3-phenylen)-bausteinen

Three cyclopentamers (2a–c) and a chainlike pentanuclear oligomer (3a) were prepared by stepwise syntheses. The molecules of the cyclic compounds with 20 links contain o,o′-methylene bridged 2-hydroxy-5-methyl-1,3-phenylene or 2-hydroxy-5-tert-butyl-1,3-phenylene units in a strictly defined manner. The properties of the cyclic pentamer 2a and the chainlike pentanuclear oligomer 3a were compared. They differ by their solubilities, melting points, IR and 1H NMR spectra (pseudorotation) and fragmentation behaviour shown by their mass spectra. The pseudorotation of the cyclic compounds were quantitatively studied.

Die /c-Funktionen zeigen Minima, die bei Polyacrylsaure und desaminierten Eiweisen schon beobachtet wurden, aber unseres Wissens bei Phenolharzen noch unbekannt sind. Es werden ferner Angaben gemacht uber die Acetylierung, den Umsatz mit Phenylisocyanat zu Urethanen und die Methylierung mit Diazomethan. Le village actuel de Fontaines, situé à environ 8 km au N.-O. de Chalon-sur-Saône, se développe sur 1,5 km de long selon un unique axe E-O, depuis la montagne Saint-Hilaire à l’ouest, occupée au Néolithique puis durant l’Antiquité tardive et le haut Moyen Âge, jusqu’à l’église paroissiale Saint-Just, à l’est. Malgré une emprise limitée et contrainte par de nombreux réseaux existants, l’opération a permis de documenter l’environnement immédiat de l’église, occupé depuis l’Antiquité jusqu’à nos jours.
Synthesis and characterization of ethylene-1-hexene copolymers prepared by using MgCl2(THF)2-supported Ziegler-Natta catalysts

Ethylene was copolymerized with 1-hexene over vanadium (VOCl3 and VCl4) and titanium (TiCl4) catalysts supported on MgCl2(THF)2 and activated with Et2AlCl. So far these catalyst systems have not been known as initiators of ethylene-1-hexene copolymerization. The vanadium catalysts were more active than the titanium catalyst and, at identical comonomer concentrations in the feed, gave rise to a greater incorporation of 1-hexene into the copolymer. Even at relatively low fractions of 1-hexene, the MgCl2(THF)2-supported catalysts affected much the copolymer properties like density, melting point and crystallinity.
