Molecular relationship among Salmonella dublin isolates identified at the Center for Enterobacteriaceae of Palermo during the years 1971-85.
1987
SUMMARYA molecular epidemiological study was carried out on 60Salmonella dublinisolates identified at the Southern Italy Enterobacteriaceae Center between 1971 and 1985. These included 23 isolates from children with diarrhoea in Palermo obtained during 1984.All isolates from the outbreak of gastroenteritis in children were resistant to chloramphenicol and streptomycin and harboured two plasmids of 50 MDa and 3 MDa molecular weight, whereas the majority of the isolates identified before 1984 were susceptible to these antibiotics and carried only a 50 MDa molecular weight plasmid. FourS. dublinstrains successively identified from cattle (Palermo, Foggia, Portici) and from a child (Palermo) we…
Orthogonality Catastrophe and Decoherence in a Trapped-Fermion Environment
2012
The Fermi edge singularity and the Anderson orthogonality catastrophe describe the universal physics which occurs when a Fermi sea is locally quenched by the sudden switching of a scattering potential, leading to a brutal disturbance of its ground state. We demonstrate that the effect can be seen in the controllable domain of ultracold trapped gases by providing an analytic description of the out-of-equilibrium response to an atomic impurity, both at zero and at finite temperature. Furthermore, we link the transient behavior of the gas to the decoherence of the impurity, and, in particular to the amount of non-markovianity of its dynamics.
Crystallization of chiral molecular compounds: what can be learned from the Cambridge Structural Database?
2020
A detailed study on chiral compound structures found in the Cambridge Structural Database (CSD) is presented. Solvates, salts and co-crystals have intentionally been excluded, in order to focus on the most basic structures of single enantiomers, scalemates and racemates. Similarity between the latter and structures of achiral monomolecular compounds has been established and utilized to arrive at important conclusions about crystallization of chiral compounds. For example, the fundamental phenomenon of conglomerate formation and, in particular, their frequency of occurrence is addressed. In addition, rarely occurring kryptoracemates and scalemic compounds (anomalous racemates) are discussed.…
Synthesis of quadruped-shaped polyfunctionalized o-carborane synthons
2011
[EN] o-Carborane derivatives with precisely defined patterns of substitution have been prepared from 8,9,10,12-I-4-1,2-closo-C2B10H8 by replacing the iodine atoms, bonded to four adjacent boron vertices in the cluster, with allyl, and subsequently 3-hydroxypropyl groups. The resulting structures, comprising four pendant arms and two reactive vertices located on opposite sides of a central o-carborane core, can be envisaged as versatile precursors for dendritic growth
Amphiphilic Dendrimers Control Protein Binding and Corona Formation on Liposome Nanocarriers
2020
Amphiphilic polyphenylene dendrimers (PPDs) with distinct lipophilic and positively or negatively charged surface groups were adsorbed onto liposomes and their impact on protein adsorption in blood plasma was studied. The PPD corona reduced binding of specific opsonins and increased the adsorption of proteins controlling cellular uptake based on their surface patches.
Multiple scattering theory for non-local and multichannel potentials.
2012
International audience; Methodological advances in multiple scattering theory (MST) in both wave and Green's function versions are reported for the calculation of electronic ground and excited state properties of condensed matter systems with an emphasis on core-level photoemission and absorption spectra. Full-potential MST is reviewed and extended to non-local potentials. Multichannel MST is reformulated in terms of the multichannel density matrix whereby strong electron correlation of atomic multiplet type can be accounted for in both ground and excited states.
Reversible pH-induced fluorescence colour change of gold nanoclusters based on pH-regulated surface interactions.
2019
To prepare water-dispersible, biocompatible, ratiometric pH nanosensors is challenging. We report here for the first time that the emission colour of NAD+-capped AuNCs responds to the mono-/bidentate anchoring of the phosphoric groups of the ligand. The AuNCs exhibit a high luminescence (21% quantum yield) and an outstanding performance as fluorescent ratiometric pH sensors over a broad pH range.
Benzothiazolethione complexes of coinage metals: from mononuclear complexes to clusters and polymers
2019
Abstract The reactions of 2(3H)-benzothiazolethione (Hbtt) with [AuCl(tetrahydrothiophene)] and CuBr2 were studied, and found to yield a tetranuclear cluster compound [Au(btt)]4 [1] and a polymeric structure [CuBr(btt-btt)]n.nTHF (2). Crystallographic and spectroscopic methods were used for the characterization. In 1, the monoanionic ligand acted as a bidentate bridging N,S-donor giving a molecular cluster structure of an asymmetric coordination isomer. In the formation of 2, the ligand was dimerized by forming a S–S bond after deprotonation, and coordination via nitrogen donors to metal atoms took place leading to a polymeric structure. To clarify the diversity of reactions of Hbtt with co…
Synthesis, Coordination to Rh(I), and Hydroformylation Catalysis of New β-Aminophosphines Bearing a Dangling Nitrogen Group: An Unusual Inversion of…
2002
Variants of the beta-aminophosphine L(1) [Ph(2)PCH(2)CH(Ph)NHPh] containing additional nitrogen donor functions have been prepared. These functions are branched off the C atom adjacent to the P atom, or the P atom itself. Ligand [Ph(2)PCH(o-C(6)H(4)NMe(2))CH(Ph)NHPh] has been obtained as a mixture of two diastereomers L(3A) and L(3B) by lithiation of L(2) [Ph(2)PCH(2)(o-C(6)H(4)NMe(2))] with n-BuLi followed by PhCH=NPh addition and hydrolysis. The diastereomers have been separated by fractional crystallization from ethanol. Ligand Et(2)NCH(2)P(Ph)CH(2)CH(Ph)NHPh has been obtained as a mixture of two diastereomers L(5A) and L(5B)(starting with P-Ph reductive cleavage of L(1) by lithium and s…
Indoor air quality in schools of a highly polluted south Mediterranean area
2019
This study aimed at surveying lower secondary schools in southern Italy, in a highly polluted area. A community close to an industrial area and three villages in rural areas was investigated. Indoor temperature, relative humidity (RH), gaseous pollutants (CO 2 and NO 2 ), selected biological pollutants in indoor dust, and the indoor/outdoor mass concentration and elemental composition of PM 2.5 were ascertained. Temperature and RH were within, or close to, the comfort range, while CO 2 frequently exceeded the threshold of 1000 ppm, indicating inadequate air exchange rate. In all the classrooms, median NO 2 levels were above the WHO threshold value. Dermatophagoides p. allergen concentration…
