Imaging photoplethysmography for clinical assessment of cutaneous microcirculation at two different depths

The feasibility of bispectral imaging photoplethysmography (iPPG) system for clinical assessment of cutaneous microcirculation at two different depths is proposed. The iPPG system has been developed and evaluated for in vivo conditions during various tests: (1) topical application of vasodilatory liniment on the skin, (2) skin local heating, (3) arterial occlusion, and (4) regional anesthesia. The device has been validated by the measurements of a laser Doppler imager (LDI) as a reference. Autonomic regulation of nasal vessels during changes in body position

The effects of postural changes on nasal airflow and nasal capillary blood flow were investigated in 15 healthy volunteers. Measurements were performed following nasal application of saline solution (control), the alpha-1 receptor antagonist prazosin, the alpha-2 receptor antagonist yohimbine, and after application of both prazosin and yohimbine. Nasal airflow in the control experiments did not significantly differ in the upright (362 +/- 166 ml/s), dorsally recumbent (350 +/- 167 ml/s) and 70 degrees head down position (311 +/- 167 ml/s). Homocysteine levels in patients with primary and secondary Raynaud's phenomenon. Its association with microangiopathy severity

The association between hyperhomocysteinemia (HHcy) and Raynaud's phenomenon (RP) remains a matter of debate. In 18 primary RP, 23 secondary RP and 41 controls, we investigated homocysteine (Hcy) levels along with biochemical and inflammatory parameters. The Hcy levels in both primary and secondary RP were elevated when compared with controls (p0.05 and p0.01, respectively). As age was higher in secondary RP as compared with controls (p0.01), both primary and secondary RP were age-matched with a corresponding control group, and with Hcy maintaining its statistical significance (p0.05). Myopathic form of arthrogryposis and microcirculation lesion.

A microvascular lesion characterized by extensive platelet aggregation, thrombosis, vascular damage with hemorrhages was found in the muscle of a 2-month-old boy with a myopathic form of the arthrogryposis syndrome. The lesion morphologically resembled the vascular leakage seen in immunologically mediated tissue injury. A degradative effect of proteases released during platelet and neutrophil aggregation on the muscle and joints is suggested.

It is generally accepted that tumor microcirculation, blood flow, oxygen and nutrient supply, tissue pH distribution, and the bioenergetic status (factors which are usually closely linked and which define the so-called cellular microenvironment) can markedly influence the therapeutic response of malignant tumors. Tumor blood flow is the major determinant for intra-tumor pharmacokinetics and (through modulation of the cellular microenvironment) of pharmacody-namics. Blood flow patterns spatially associated with platelet aggregates in murine colitis.

In the normal murine mucosal plexus, blood flow is generally smooth and continuous. In inflammatory conditions, such as chemically-induced murine colitis, the mucosal plexus demonstrates markedly abnormal flow patterns. The inflamed mucosal plexus is associated with widely variable blood flow velocity as well as discontinuous and even bidirectional flow. Effects of thrombin and of the phospholipase C inhibitor, D609, on the vascularity of the chick chorioallantoic membrane.

Abstract Microvascular corrosion casting was used to assess the effects of thrombin and D609, a phospholipase C inhibitor, on the vascularity of the chick embryo chorioallantoic membrane (CAM). Discs containing vehicle, thrombin or D609 were placed on the CAM of fertilized white Leghorn eggs on Day 9 of gestation and vascularity was assessed on Day 11. Thrombin caused significant increases in the numbers (43%), diameters (5%) and lengths (17%), of both pre- and postcapillaries (first-order vessels by centripetal ordering). Generation of human pulmonary microvascular endothelial cell lines.

The limited lifespan of human microvascular endothelial cells in cell culture represents a major obstacle for the study of microvascular pathobiology. To date, no endothelial cell line is available that demonstrates all of the fundamental characteristics of microvascular endothelial cells. We have generated endothelial cell lines from human pulmonary microvascular endothelial cells (HPMEC) isolated from adult donors.
