A prerequisite for the biochemical and physiological investigation of microorganisms is the isolation and management of pure cultures. Nevertheless, most of the environmental microorganisms are graded as “yet not cultivable” because the nutritional requirements are unknown or they could not be isolated due to the fact that fast-growing strains overgrow other microorganisms of a microbiota. In addition to plating techniques, isolation without cultivation and analysis of microbes could be performed by micromanipulation techniques or the application of optical tweezers followed by the utilization of PCR-based technologies.

Application of organic selenium in plants and microorganisms as trace element supplement is attracting more and more attention. In this study, Bacillus cereus, an important probiotic, was used for selenium enrichment with sodium selenite as selenium source. The adherence and colonization of probiotic bacteria are considered as essential factors for their immunoregulatory function in the host. Abstract The odorous volatile compounds produced by 3 strains (out of 25 strains tested) of Phlebia radiata Fr. were investigated on six synthetic media and identified by GC-MS analysis. One of the 3 strains was odourless. Aromatic primary alcohols and a sesquiterpenic alcohol, α-bisabolol, were the most abundant metabolites for both of the other strains, which exhibited similar flavours and a similar gas chromatographic profile.
