Direct determination by portable ED-XRF of mineral profile in cocoa powder samples

Abstract The present study has exploited the rapidity of the analysis and the multi-elemental capability of the energy dispersive X- ray fluorescence (ED-XRF) technique for the mineral profile determination in cocoa powder. A fast, cheap and environmental sustainable method without reagent consumption or toxic waste generation has been proposed. The samples can be prepared in the form of pellets of 13 mm in diameter and 2–3 mm thickness. Analysis of multipactor RF breakdown in a waveguide containing a transversely magnetized ferrite

In this paper, the multipactor RF breakdown in a parallel-plate waveguide partially filled with a ferrite slab magnetized normal to the metallic plates is studied. An external magnetic field is applied along the vertical direction between the plates in order to magnetize the ferrite. Numerical simulations using an in-house 3-D code are carried out to obtain the multipactor RF voltage threshold in this kind of structures. The presented results show that the multipactor RF voltage threshold at certain frequencies becomes considerably lower than for the corresponding classical metallic parallel-plate waveguide with the same vacuum gap

Microwave hydrothermal flash synthesis of nanocomposites Fe–Co alloy/cobalt ferrite

Abstract The present article presents, for the first time, the last developments reported for an original microwave hydrothermal flash synthesis of Fe–Co alloys (FeyCo1−y)/cobalt ferrite (Fe3−xCoxO4) nanocomposites. Synthesis was performed in alcoholic solutions of ferrous chloride, cobalt chloride and sodium ethoxide (EtONa) using a microwave autoclave (The RAMO system) specially designed by authors. Compared with conventional synthesis, smaller grains (100 nm compared to 1 μm) can be produced in a short period (e.g. 10 s) using a less basic medium. Drying rate control in microwave assisted processing of sliced apples

The most enhanced microwave systems for the preparation of quality-dehydrated fruits continuously adjust the power level in order to maintain the product temperature above a target value. As a result, typical drying curves that exhibit high drying rates in the middle stage are obtained. This can often lead to quality damage or undesirable changes on food colour and texture. Microwave Fourier Transform Spectroscopy of Rovibrational Transitions in the ν 2 /ν 4 Dyads of Methane- 12 C and - 13 C

The ν2/ν4 dyad-dyad spectra of 12CH4 and 13CH4 molecules in the (8÷20) GHz region have been predicted including line strengths. All transitions with γmax > 810-12 cm-1 have been observed directly using a MWFT spectrometer: six F-type transitions for 12CH4 and nine for 13CH4.

Relaxation of photogenerated carriers in P3HT:PCBM organic blends.

Relaxing in the sunlight. Long time-transient decays of photogenerated carriers in P3HT:PCBM blends for organic solar cells are interpreted in terms of the relaxation of hole carriers in a broad density of states. The after-pulse time-resolved microwave conductivity (TRMC) decays observed in P3HT:PCBM blends display a dependence on time close to t−β, independent of excitation intensity, in the 10 ns–1 μs range. This is explained in terms of the relaxation of carriers in a Gaussian density of states (DOS). One-Dimensional Hypersonic Phononic Crystals

We report experimental observation of a normal incidence phononic band gap in one-dimensional periodic (SiO(2)/poly(methyl methacrylate)) multilayer film at gigahertz frequencies using Brillouin spectroscopy. The band gap to midgap ratio of 0.30 occurs for elastic wave propagation along the periodicity direction, whereas for inplane propagation the system displays an effective medium behavior. The phononic properties are well captured by numerical simulations. The porosity in the silica layers presents a structural scaffold for the introduction of secondary active media for potential coupling between phonons and other excitations, such as photons and electrons.

Analysis of the effects of pulsed microwave on cardiac activity

Abstract The exposure of isolated chick embryo hearts to 2.45 GHz pulse modulated microwaves has identified certain phenomena: (1) when the heartbeat was irregular, an appropriate pulse repetition rate caused regularization; (2) during regular beating, an increase of pulse repetition rate similarly increased the heartbeat frequency, until an irregular heartbeat appeared; (3) by applying microwaves, when an arrhythmia occurs, a regular beat appeared after a few seconds. Microwave effects on germination and growth of radish (Raphanus sativusL.) seedlings

Abstract Germination of radish seeds was delayed and reduced by low-power microwave exposure at 10.5 and 12.5 GHz. Irradiation decreased also hypocotyl growth rate. These effects were increased by rising of the microwave power and by the vertically polarised electromagnetic field. When the irradiation was suspended the seedling growth recovered.
