This article briefly describes the use of a photon counting system (ARGUS-100) in the detection of low levels of light. The ARGUS-100 was used in determining ATP in cell sections from tumor tissues and in measuring a luminescence-enhanced immunoluminometric assay, using ferritin as the analyte, based on the luminol-peroxide-4-iodophenol reaction with peroxidase as the enzyme. The aim is not so much the presentation of data, but rather to show the potentials of the photon counting camera in increasing our knowledge of the cellular and subcellular levels, as well as lowering the detection limits in already sensitive systems, such as immunoassays.

The gut microbiota: An emerging risk factor for cardiovascular and cerebrovascular disease

Commensal gut microbiota have recently been implicated in cardiovascular disease (CVD) and cerebrovascular disease. Atherosclerotic plaque formation depends on the colonization status of the host. In addition to host nutrition and the related microbiota-dependent metabolic changes, activation of innate immune pathways triggers the development of atherosclerosis and supports arterial thrombosis. DMAP-BODIPY Alkynes: A Convenient Tool for Labeling Biomolecules for Bimodal PET-Optical Imaging

Several new boron dipyrromethene/N,N-dimethylaminopyridine (BODIPY-DMAP) assemblies were synthesized as precursors for bimodal imaging probes (optical imaging, OI/positron emission tomography, PET). The photophysical properties of the new compounds were also studied. The first proof-of-concept was obtained with the preparation of several new BODIPY-labeled bombesins and evaluation of the affinity for bombesin receptors by using a competition binding assay. Synthesis and fluorescence emission of neutral and anionic di- and tetra-carboranyl compounds

A new family of photoluminescent neutral and anionic di-carboranyl and tetra-carboranyl derivatives have been synthesized and characterized. The reaction of α,α'-bis(3,5-bis(bromomethyl)phenoxy-m-xylene with 4 equiv. of the monolithium salt of 1-Ph-1,2-C(2)B(10)H(11) or 1-Me-1,2-C(2)B(10)H(11) gives the neutral tetracarboranyl-functionalized aryl ether derivatives closo-1 and closo-2, respectively. A Curcumin-BODIPY Dyad and Its Silica Hybrid as NIR Bioimaging Probes

In this paper we describe the synthesis of a novel bichromophoric system in which an efficient photoinduced intercomponent energy transfer process is active. The dyad consists of one subunit of curcumin and one of BODIPY and is able to emit in the far-red region, offering a large Stokes shift, capable of limiting light scattering processes for applications in microscopy. The system has been encapsulated in MCM-41 nanoparticles with dimensions between 50 and 80 nm. Both the molecular dyad and individual subunits were tested with different cell lines to study their effective applicability in bioimaging. Abstract In the last years the mortar dating through Optically Stimulated Luminescence (OSL) techniques has become a viable support for chronological estimations (date of construction or restoration episodes) of historical buildings. The complex formation of a tetraammonium C1-resorcinarene (R+4HCl) was studied using electrospray ionization Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance (ESI-FTICR) mass spectrometry. Although R+4HCl easily loses its counter ions in the ESI process, a neutral self-assembled structure with an intramolecular circular hydrogen-bonded 16-membered -N(+)-H ... X(-) ... Air stable hybrid organic-inorganic light emitting diodes using ZnO as the cathode

An air stable hybrid organic-inorganic light emitting device is presented. This architecture makes use of metal oxides as charge injecting materials into the light emitting polymer, avoiding the use of air sensitive cathodes commonly employed in organic light emitting diode manufacturing. We report the application of zinc oxide as a cathode in an organic light emitting device. This electroluminescent device shows high brightness levels reaching 6500 cd/m2 at voltages as low as 8 V. Compared to a conventional device using low workfunction metal cathodes, our device shows a lower turn-on voltage and it can operate in air.

Dipole reorientation and local density of optical states influence the emission of light-emittingelectrochemical cells

Herein, we analyze the temporal evolution of the electroluminescence of light-emitting electrochemicalcells (LECs), a thin-film light-emitting device, in order to maximize the luminous power radiated bythese devices. A careful analysis of the spectral and angular distribution of the emission of LECsfabricated under the same experimental conditions allows describing the dynamics of the spatial regionfrom which LECs emit,i.e.the generation zone, as bias is applied. Systematic study of SYBR green chromophore reveals major improvement with one heteroatom difference

Five nucleic acid binding cyanine dyes were synthesized and their photophysical properties were evaluated. Changing a single heteroatom in the chromophore causes major differences both in brightness and photostability between the dyes. With such alteration, the brightness of the chromophore increased two-fold compared to the one found in SYBR Green I.
