Curating Objects from the European Border Zone: The “Lampedusa Refugee Boat”

2019

The cultural politics of the present encourage museums and artists to seek an ethical vision within Europe navigating the knowledge of ongoing mass death at the border. This is one explanation for the interest in objects symbolising present-day irregular border crossing among museum curators, artists, designers and activists. Wooden fishing boats, inflatable dinghies and life jackets appear regularly in exhibitions and installations. This chapter focuses on the meaning of “the Lampedusa boat” and argues that the narrative context within which the boats are exhibited guides the work of imagination that animates the object. While exhibiting the boats carries the critical potential to relocate…

Narratives Around Iberian Culture at Valencia Museums and Archaeological Sites: From Official Discourses to Social Perceptions

2016

2016

[EN] In the training curriculum of teachers there is a gap in important issues such as the defense of Human Rights and specifically the rights of LGBT minorities. Permanent and present issues such as homophobic bullying or reflection on sexual diversity remain invisible in the subjects of university courses for future teachers (Preliminary Education and Primary School). It is necessary to address such issues. In this paper we present an educational experience in which the students are encouraged to participate in educational activities for an online museum. Museari Museu de l'Imaginari was created to promote collaborative actions to visualize the problems of LGBT groups, encouraging the par…

Phylogeny and Taxonomy of the Risa Genus-group (Diptera: Ephydridae), with Description of a New Genus from Australia

2023

The systematic and somewhat controversial history of Risa Becker is presented, and its relationship with Diasemocera Bezzi (tribe Psilopini, Ephydridae) is documented by morphological evidence and an association with host plants in the family Amaranthaceae. The tribe Risini Papp (as Risidae) is synonymized with Psilopini Cresson. Notorisa gen. nov., from Australia, is described (type species: Notorisa mcalpinei sp. nov.; Australia. Victoria: Big Desert National Park, near Lake Hindmarsh; 36°03.7'S 141°54.8'E). Achaetorisa Papp is retained as a subgenus within Risa and includes five species, including two new combinations: Risa brevicornis (Papp) comb. nov., Risa salsolae (Mathis & Zatwa…

Designing the UNESCO Buffer Zone.

2019

The International Design Call for the Great Villa Adriana “Designing the UNESCO Buffer Zone” – proposed last year by the Accademia Adrianea di Achitettura e Archeologia – involved numerous Schools of Architecture from all over Europe, organized in teams with famous architectural practices. The debate on fragile territories, of which the Tivoli area is a paradigm, has produced results of great quality and reliability, demonstrating that the multidisciplinary approach (which ranged from landscape design to museographic details) is currently the most correct one and making clear that the continuity of dialogue on this subject in the field of monumental heritage and landscape can be a useful st…
