Isolated self-assembled InAs/InP(001) quantum wires obtained by controlling the growth front evolution

In this work we explore the first stages of quantum wire (QWR) formation studying the evolution of the growth front for InAs coverages below the critical thickness, θc, determined by reflection high energy electron diffraction (RHEED). Our results obtained by in situ measurement of the accumulated stress evolution during InAs growth on InP(001) show that the relaxation process starts at a certain InAs coverage θRθR this ensemble of isolated nanostructures progressively evolves towards QWRs that cover the whole surface for θ = θc. The origin of slow electron recombination processes in dye-sensitized solar cells with alumina barrier coatings

We investigate the effect of a thin alumina coating of nanocrystalline TiO2 films on recombination dynamics of dye-sensitized solar cells. Both coated and uncoated cells were measured by a combination of techniques: transient absorption spectroscopy, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and open-circuit voltage decay. It is found that the alumina barrier reduces the recombination of photoinjected electrons to both dye cations and the oxidized redox couple. Abstract A hybrid material (nano-metal organic framework@organic polymer, named as nano-MOF@polymer) was applied for the first time as sorbent for on-line solid-phase extraction capillary electrophoresis with ultraviolet detection (SPE-CE-UV). Crystalline nanorods as possible templates for the synthesis of amorphous biosilica during spicule formation in Demospongiae.

Supra-aggregates of fiber-forming anisotropic molecules.

In this paper, the self-organization of fiber-forming anisotropic molecules is inspected both theoretically and experimentally. In the first part, a theoretical model which extends the de Gennes theory of thin films to assemblies of strongly anisotropic molecules is reported. The model predicts that solid supported thin films made up of fiber-forming discotic molecules can grow with both tangential and radial arrangement of the fibers, respectively leading to the formation of compact and holed supra- aggregates. Fabrication of Chemically Tunable, Hierarchically Branched Polymeric Nanostructures by Multi-branched Anodic Aluminum Oxide Templates

In this paper, a template-assisted replication method is demonstrated for the fabrication of hierarchically branched polymeric nanostructures composed of post-modifiable poly(pentafluorophenyl acrylate). Anodic aluminum oxide templates with various shapes of hierarchically branched pores are fabricated by an asymmetric two-step anodization process. Towards Laser-Textured Antibacterial Surfaces

AbstractEscherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus bacterial retention on mirror-polished and ultrashort pulse laser-textured surfaces is quantified with a new approach based on ISO standards for measurement of antibacterial performance. It is shown that both wettability and surface morphology influence antibacterial behavior, with neither superhydrophobicity nor low surface roughness alone sufficient for reducing initial retention of either tested cell type. Sub-threshold signal processing in arrays of non-identical nanostructures

Weak input signals are routinely processed by molecular-scaled biological networks composed of non-identical units that operate correctly in a noisy environment. In order to show that artificial nanostructures can mimic this behavior, we explore theoretically noise-assisted signal processing in arrays of metallic nanoparticles functionalized with organic ligands that act as tunneling junctions connecting the nanoparticle to the external electrodes.
