“Poisonous plants” or schools of virtue? The second “rise” of the novel in eighteenth-century Spain

If Spanish literature (both Catalan and Castilian)had played a central role in the development of fictional prose narrative from the fifteenth century, the late eighteenth century witnessed a second "rise" of the novel, consisting not only of original works, but also of translations, in connection with changes in reading practices and new models of domesticity and sensibility. This essay focuses on moral debate about the sentimental novel, showing how it was both politicised (new types of fiction being usually perceived as foreign and subversive) and gendered, and how it contributed to shape women's uneasy relation to the novel in their reading and writing.

Abstract The market for functional foods has been growing steadily in recent years, as it is linked to a healthier diet and adds value to food products. However, more information regarding aspects that influence functional food (FF) spending behaviour is needed to gain a better understanding of what underlies FF choice and avoid product failure. The objective of this study was to build a structural equation model of Spaniards' FF spending behaviour, based on individual characteristics such as satisfaction with life, decision-making styles, gender, age and some attitudes towards food choice. This chapter summarizes research on the development of human olfactory skills to rely on different cues conveyed by odorants, such as odor quality, intensity, position in space, novelty/familiarity, and hedonic value. The sensory, neural, and psychological dimensions at the root of these early aptitudes remain poorly explored in humans, but one can safely affirm that any weak odor to which the infant has previously been nonadversely exposed will have a higher reinforcing value than any novel odor.
