Activity of Antimicrobial Silver Polystyrene Nanocomposites.

2012

A simple technique based on doping polymers within situgenerated silver nanoparticles (Ag/PS films) has been developed. In particular, an antiseptic material has been prepared by dissolving silver 1,5-cyclooctadiene-hexafluoroacetylacetonate in amorphous polystyrene, and the obtained solid solution has been heated for ca. 10 s at a convenient temperature (180°C). Under such conditions the metal precursor decomposes producing silver atoms that diffuse into the polymer and clusterize. The antimicrobial characteristics of the resulting polystyrene-based material have been accurately evaluated towardEscherichia coli (E. coli)comparing the cytotoxicity effect of 10 wt.% and 30 wt.% (drastic and …

Preparation and characterization of new hydrogels based on hyaluronic acid and α,β-polyaspartylhydrazide

2007

Abstract Hyaluronic acid (HA) has been crosslinked with α,β-polyaspartylhydrazide (PAHy). The crosslinking reaction has been performed in acidic medium in the presence of various amounts of N-ethyl-N′-(3-dimethylaminopropyl)-carbodiimide hydrochloride (EDC). All obtained samples have been characterized by FT-IR analysis and swelling measurements in double distilled water that have confirmed the occurrence of a chemical linkage between two polymers and the affinity towards aqueous medium of HA–PAHy networks, respectively. In vitro degradation assays have been performed in simulated physiological conditions as well as in the presence of hyaluronidase. Experimental data evidenced that HA–PAHy …

Proton Conducting Membrane Prepared by Cross-Linking Highly Sulfonated Peek for PEMFC Application

2009

The proton conducting membrane was prepared by cross-linking highly sulfonated and sulfinated poly(etheretherketone) (SsPEEK). The cross-linked membrane is low cost due to its use of non-expensive chemical and simple production procedure. The membrane exhibited high proton conductivity (0.04 S/cm at 60 °C), extremely reduced water uptake, enhanced strength and stability compared with that of non-cross-linked membrane. These results suggested that the cross-linked PEEK membrane is a suitable candidate of proton conducting membranes for polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) applications, particularly promising to be used in direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC) due to its lower methanol c…

Mössbauer Spectroscopy and Organotin Polymers

2008

Mössbauer spectroscopy allows the structural analysis of certain metal atoms situated in complex structures. Briefly, Mössbauer spectroscopy is a resonant absorption spectroscopy that is observed best in isotopes having long lived, low-lying excited nuclear energy states. The largest recoil-free resonant cross-section is found for 57Fe. Currently, Mössbauer spectroscopy is being used on Mars to identify iron compounds that are present in the Martian landscape. There are over 20,000 entries in SciFinder for Mössbauer spectroscopy, of which the two largest entries are for iron and tin containing compounds. There are only about 100 entries for organotin compounds, with only a handful related t…

Superexchange pathways in oxovanadium(IV) phosphates

1992

Abstract Oxovanadium(IV) phosphates show a diversity of magnetic behaviours that cannot be deduced from their respective structural features only. In part, this is due to the involvement of phosphate bridges in the spin transfer between V(IV) centres, and 31P solid state nuclear magnetic resonance becomes a key tool in determining the exchange mechanisms. The magnetic properties of a wide set of vanadium(IV) containing derivatives can be explained by realizing that a good overlap of the magnetic orbits may be achieved through paths involving phosphorus d orbitals.

Experimental design approach in the synthesis of molecularly imprinted polymers specific for iprodione fungicide

2015

International audience; An experimental design (ED) approach was applied to study the weight of three factors in the synthesis of a molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) specific for iprodione fungicide. The objective was to obtain a high specific polymer with the best performance of iprodione binding. Thirteen iprodione-imprinted polymers and 13 non-imprinted polymers (NIP) were synthesized according to ED having 3 influencing factors: the polymerization method, the crosslinker nature and the functional monomer type. For each factor, two levels were studied: bulk and precipitation polymerization for the first factor, trimethylolpropane trimethacrylate (TRIM) and ethylene glycol dimethacrylat…

Selective photocatalytic oxidation of 3-pyridinemethanol on platinized acid/base modified TiO2

2021

TiO2 catalysts, modified with acidic or alkaline solutions and then platinized, were used for the partial photocatalytic oxidation of 3-pyridinemethanol to 3-pyridinemethanal and vitamin B-3 under environmentally friendly conditions. The reaction took place in water under UVA light and air oxygen. Catalysts were characterized by TEM, photoluminescence, DRIFT-IR, Raman, DRS, XPS, and photocurrent measurements. The photocatalytic activity results show that Pt loading of untreated samples leads to a significant activity improvement (hence product yield) as much as acid and alkaline treatments do. Moreover, the alkaline treated TiO2 samples exhibit a further increase in activity after loading w…

Citric Acid Based Carbon Dots with Amine Type Stabilizers: pH-Specific Luminescence and Quantum Yield Characteristics

2020

We report the synthesis and spectroscopic characteristics of two different sets of carbon dots (CDs) formed by hydrothermal reaction between citric acid and polyethylenimine (PEI) or 2,3-diaminopyridine (DAP). Although the formation of amide-based species and the presence of citrazinic acid type derivates assumed to be responsible for a blue emission is confirmed for both CDs by elemental analysis, infrared spectroscopy, and mass spectrometry, a higher abundance of sp2-hybridized nitrogen is observed for DAP-based CDs, which causes a red-shift of the n-π* absorption band relative to the one of PEI-based CDs. These CD systems possess high photoluminescence quantum yields (QY) of ∼40% and ∼48…

Synthesis and characterization of water-swellable?,?-polyasparthydrazide derivatives

1995

α, β-polyasparthydrazide (PAHy) was crosslinked by glutaraldehyde to form water-swellable materials possessing a three-dimensional molecular network. Different crosslinking degrees were prepared varying glutaraldehyde/PAHy ratio and samples containing 5-fluorouracil were obtained by incorporating the drug into the polymer networks during the crosslinking reaction. All samples were characterized by swelling tests, thermal, x-ray and SEM analysis. Their microstructure was observed through scanning electron microscopy. Furthermore, for samples containing the anticancer drug,in vitro release studies were performed in pH 7.4 buffer solution.

pH-sensitive hydrogel based on a novel photocross-linkable copolymer.

2004

A pH sensitive hydrogel has been prepared by a UV irradiation technique. Starting polymer was the PHM (poly hydroxyethylaspartamide methacrylated) obtained from polyaspartamide (PHEA) partially derivatized with methacrylic anhydride (MA). This new copolymer has been further derivatized with succinic anhydride (SA) to obtain PHM-SA that has been cross-linked by UV irradiation to form a pH sensitive hydrogel. The network, recovered after washing as a powder, has been been characterized by FT-IR spectrophotometry and particle size distribution analysis. Moreover, to have information about water affinity of the prepared sample, swelling measurements have been carried out in aqueous media mimick…
