Aims: This work focuses on the development of a method for the identification of pathogenic yeast. With this aim, we target the nucleotide sequence of the RPS0 gene of pathogenic yeast species with specific PCR primers. Sequences of isopenicillin N synthetase genes suggest horizontal gene transfer from prokaryotes to eukaryotes

Evolutionary distances between bacterial and fungal isopenicillin N synthetase (IPNS) genes have been compared to distances between the corresponding 5S rRNA genes. The presence of sequences homologous to the IPNS gene has been examined in DNAs from representative prokaryotic organisms and Ascomycotina. The results of both analyses strongly support two different events of horizontal transfer of the IPNS gene from bacteria to filamentous fungi. This is the first example of such a type of transfer from prokaryotes to eukaryotes.

Two different transcripts are synthesized on the DNA of deletion mutant PII of bacteriophage f1 in E. coli cells infected with this miniphage. Both RNA species appear to be primary transcripts and differ by about 100 nucleotides at their 3'OH end. Mapping of these molecules on the miniphage genome suggests that a two-site terminator is active at the end of the I region of transcription of bacteriophage f1.
Genome organization and nucleotide sequence of human papillomavirus type 39

The 7833-bp nucleotide sequence of human papillomavirus type 39 (HPV39), which is associated with genital intraepithelial neoplasias and invasive carcinomas, has been determined. The genome organization deduced from the sequence shares characteristic features with other genital papillomaviruses. According to sequence comparisons, HPV39 most closely resembles HPV18 and may be a member of a subgroup of genital papillomaviruses distinct from the HPV16/31/33 group. As a novel feature, we report a 1.3-kb open reading frame on the DNA strand which lacks major open reading frames in the other sequenced HPV genomes.

This study combines conventional cytogenetics, fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH), multiplex-FISH and comparative genomic hybridization (CGH). In applying this multimodal approach on the human leukemia cell line K562, the chromosome composition was refined in detail and compared with data from the literature. A hypotriploid karyotype with a modal chromosome number of 67, and 21 unique marker chromosomes were identified. The aim of the study was to detect hepatitis B virus (HBV) DNA by in situ hybridization (ISH) with a 35S-labeled radioactive probe in frozen liver biopsy tissue sections of 63 hepatitis B virus surface antigen (HBsAg)-positive children. The results were compared to other markers of viral replication. HBV DNA was detected in 48 children. Of the 15 negative cases, four had hepatitis B envelope antigen (HBeAg), 10 anti-HBe, and one neither HBeAg nor anti-HBe. Free HBV DNA in serum and liver was positive in one patient. We report a de novo supernumerary isochromosome 18p in a child with tetrasomy 18p, analyzed by a straightforward combination of cytogenetic and molecular cytogenetic methods. The diagnostic procedure consisted of standard banding techniques and fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) with centromere and library DNA probes for chromosome 18, and 18p-specific FISH probes prepared by chromosome microdissection and in vitro amplification. The endocannabinoid system (ECS) possesses neuromodulatory functions by influencing the release of various neurotransmitters, including GABA, noradrenaline, dopamine, glutamate and acetylcholine. Even though there are studies indicating similar interactions between the ECS and the serotonergic system, there are no results showing clear evidence for type 1 cannabinoid receptor (CB1) location on serotonergic neurons.
