The zona incerta system: Involvement in attention and movement

The zona incerta (ZI) is a large structure made of four neurochemically defined regions (at least, in rodents). It is globally involved in complex connections with telencephalic and brainstem centers. In this work, we focus on some of the anatomical links this structure develops with the cerebral cortex and the tectum. We also point to its integration within a larger basal ganglia network. The functions of this region are still mysterious, even if recent works suggest its participation in behavioral expression. Studies on sea urchin oocytes. II. Synthesis of RNA during oogenesis.

Abstract Isolated oocytes of the sea urchin Paracentrotus lividus actively incorporate 3H-uridine into RNA. Labeled RNA was analysed by sucrose gradient and acrylamide gel electrophoresis following cell fractionation. Much of the radioactivity is incorporated at the nucleolar level in the form of rRNA precursors. The kinetics of maturation of these latter suggests that this occurs at a slower rate than during embryogenesis. Other non-nucleolar RNA classes are also actively labelled and retained in the nucleus for many hours. These results are confirmed by an autoradiographic investigation.

Male sexual pheromones are rewarding stimuli for female mice, able to induce conditioned place preference. To test whether processing these natural reinforcing stimuli depends on the dopaminergic innervation of the nucleus accumbens, as for other natural rewards, we compare the effects of specific lesions of the dopaminergic innervation of the medial shell of the nucleus accumbens on two different appetitive behaviours, ‘pheromone seeking’ and sucrose preferential intake. Susceptibility of contrail ice crystal numbers to aircraft soot particle emissions

We develop an idealized, physically-based model describing combined effects of ice nucleation and sublimation on ice crystal number during persistent contrail formation. Our study represents the first effort to predict ice numbers at the point where contrails transition into contrail cirrus—several minutes past formation—by connecting them to aircraft soot particle emissions and atmospheric supersaturation with respect to ice. Results averaged over an observed exponential distribution of ice supersaturation (mean value 15%) indicate that large reductions in soot particle numbers are needed to lower contrail ice crystal numbers significantly for soot emission indices around 1015 (kg-fuel)−1,…

AbstractInactivation of S. cerevisiae β-karyopherin Msn5 causes hypersensitivity to the overexpression of mitotic cyclin Clb2 and aggravates growth defects of many mutant strains in mitotic exit, suggesting a connection between Msn5 and mitotic exit. We determined that Msn5 controlled subcellular localization of the mitotic exit transcription factor Swi5, since it was required for Swi5 nuclear export. Msn5 physically interacted with the N-terminal end of Swi5. Inactivation of Msn5 caused a severe reduction in cellular levels of Swi5 protein. Physical Parameters in Relativistic Jets from Compact Symmetric Objects

Compact symmetric objects (CSOs) conform a class of sources characterized by high luminosity radio emission located symmetrically on both sides of the active galactic nucleus on linear scales of less than 1 kpc. Given their small size, the hot spots of the jets in CSOs provide a unique laboratory for the study of the physics of relativistic jets and their environment close to the central engine. We present a simple model for the hot spots in CSOs assuming synchrotron emission, minimum energy and ram-pressure equilibrium with the external medium. Phylogeny of Veronica in the Southern and Northern Hemispheres based on plastid, nuclear ribosomal and nuclear low-copy DNA

The cosmopolitan and ecologically diverse genus Veronica with approximately 450 species is the largest genus of the newly circumscribed Plantaginaceae. Previous analyses of Veronica DNA sequences were in stark contrast to traditional systematics. However, analyses did not allow many inferences regarding the relationship between major groups identified, hindering further analysis of diversification and evolutionary trends in the genus. In-beam spectroscopic study of Cf244

The ground-state rotational band of the neutron-deficient californium (Z = 98) isotope 244Cf was identified for the first time and measured up to a tentative spin and parity of I I-pi = 20(+). The observation of the rotational band indicates that the nucleus is deformed. The kinematic and dynamic moments of inertia were deduced from the measured gamma-ray transition energies. The behavior of the dynamic moment of inertia revealed an up-bend due to a possible alignment of coupled nucleons in high-j orbitals starting at a rotational frequency of about (h) over bar (omega) = 0.20 MeV. The Search for Hidden Particles (SHiP) Collaboration has shown that the CERN SPS accelerator with its 400 $\mathrm{\small GeV/c}$ proton beam offers a unique opportunity to explore the Hidden Sector.
