Photoluminescence study of terbium-exchanged ultrastable Y zeolites: Number of species, photoluminescence decays and decay-associated spectra

2008

Terbium-exchanged ultrastable Y (USY) zeolites were investigated by using time-resolved photoluminescence spectroscopy techniques and methods. To determine the distribution of terbium species in USY zeolites together with their photoluminescence properties, several analysis methods for the time-resolved luminescence spectra were used such as the area normalization of time-resolved photoluminescence spectra, singular value decomposition, global nonlinear least squares, and the maximum entropy. Except for a questionable long lifetime, small contribution of a terbium species with lifetime of 1.9¿2.1 ms, all the experimental and analysis results converged to a two terbium species distribution w…

Maximum Likelihood Estimation and non-linear least squares fitting with Levenberg-Marquardt Algorithm implementation in FPGA devices for high resolut…

2012

This work compares two possible solutions to achieve a higher resolution in a hodoscope based on Plastic Scintillating Fibers (PSF) by obtaining the point of maximum incidence of the radioactive beam. The two fitting algorithms proposed have been tested and implemented in Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) devices. On one hand, a probabilistic model based on the Maximum Likelihood Estimation (MLE) and on the other hand, non-linear least-squares fit with the Levenberg-Marquardt Algorithm (LMA).

Linguaggio Tempo Narrazione

2009

La natura del segno linguistico è esaminata attraverso le nozioni matematiche di linearità e non-linearità. The paper aims to explain two distinct but related aspects of the linguistic sign. That is to say: linearity and non-linearity. In order to satisfy this theoretical purpose, we will seek to analyze the conceptual background of saussurean linguistics in the light of some insights of the so-called emergentist epistemologies. As we will show, the concept of downward causation play a pivotal role in such a theoretical framework.

On-line assessment of comprehension processes

2009

In this paper we describe a new version of a former paper-and-pencil standardized comprehension test called Test of Comprehension Processes (Vidal-Abarca, Gilabert, Martínez, & Sellés, 2007). The new version has been adapted to a computer-based environment based on the moving window technique. It can be used to assess comprehension strategies of students from fifth to tenth grades (11 to 16 years old). Comprehension strategies are registered on-line using reading times and visits to relevant sections of the text during the question-answering process. Data show that the computerbased version draws similar results to those provided by the paper-and-pencil version. In addition, we identify the…

Polymeric monolithic microcartridges with gold nanoparticles for the analysis of protein biomarkers by on-line solid-phase extraction capillary elect…

2020

In this study, polymeric monoliths with gold nanoparticles (AuNP@monolith) were investigated as microcartridges for the analysis of protein biomarkers by on-line solid-phase extraction capillary electrophoresis-mass spectrometry (SPE-CE-MS). “Plug-and-play” microcartridges (7 mm) were prepared from a glycidyl methacrylate (GMA)-based monolithic capillary column (5 cm x 250 µm i.d.), which was modified with ammonia and subsequently functionalized with gold nanoparticles (AuNPs). The performance of these novel microcartridges was evaluated with human transthyretin (TTR), which is a protein related to different types of familial amyloidotic polyneuropathies (FAP). Protein retention depended on…

Gait Variability Using Waist- and Ankle-Worn Inertial Measurement Units in Healthy Older Adults

2020

Gait variability observed in step duration is predictive of impending adverse health outcomes among apparently healthy older adults and could potentially be evaluated using wearable sensors (inertial measurement units, IMU). The purpose of the present study was to establish the reliability and concurrent validity of gait variability and complexity evaluated with a waist and an ankle-worn IMU. Seventeen women (age 74.8 (SD 44) years) and 10 men (73.7 (4.1) years) attended two laboratory measurement sessions a week apart. Their stride duration variability was concurrently evaluated based on a continuous 3 min walk using a force plate and a waist- and an ankle-worn IMU. Their gait complexity (…

Gas Transport in Mixed Matrix Membranes: Two Methods for Time Lag Determination

2020

The most widely used method to measure the transport properties of dense polymeric membranes is the time lag method in a constant volume/pressure increase instrument. Although simple and quick, this method provides only relatively superficial, averaged data of the permeability, diffusivity, and solubility of gas or vapor species in the membrane. The present manuscript discusses a more sophisticated computational method to determine the transport properties on the basis of a fit of the entire permeation curve, including the transient period. The traditional tangent method and the fitting procedure were compared for the transport of six light gases (H2, He, O2, N2, CH4, and CO2) and ethane an…

Algorithms for Rational Discrete Least Squares Approximation Part I: Unconstrained Optimization

1976

In this paper a modification of L. Wittmeyer’s method ([1], [14]) for rational discrete least squares approximation is given which corrects for its failure to converge to a non-optimal point in general. The modification makes necessary very little additional computing effort only. It is analysed thoroughly with respect to its conditions for convergence and its numerical properties. A suitable implementation is shown to be benign in the sense of F. L. Bauer [2]. The algorithm has proven successful even in adverse situations.
