In favour of layered feet: A response to Golston

In this response we argue that the factorial typology predicted in Martínez-Paricio & Kager (2015), which representationally relies on the existence of internally layered ternary feet, is complete and accurate. We demonstrate it does not suffer from the problematic cases of overgeneration pointed out by Golston (this issue). Additionally, we corroborate the idea that the internally layered ternary foot is a metrical representation that is typologically warranted for stress phenomena as well as for segmental and tonal metrically conditioned distributions. Constructing a Pareto front approximation for decision making

An approach to constructing a Pareto front approximation to computationally expensive multiobjective optimization problems is developed. The approximation is constructed as a sub-complex of a Delaunay triangulation of a finite set of Pareto optimal outcomes to the problem. The approach is based on the concept of inherent nondominance. Rules for checking the inherent nondominance of complexes are developed and applying the rules is demonstrated with examples. The quality of the approximation is quantified with error estimates. In this paper, we introduce the MuRO-NIMBUS method for solving multiobjective optimization problems with uncertain parameters. The concept of set-based minmax robust Pareto optimality is utilized to tackle the uncertainty in the problems. We separate the solution process into two stages: the pre-decision making stage and the decision making stage. We consider the decision maker’s preferences in the nominal case, i.e., with the most typical or undisturbed values of the uncertain parameters. A Proximal Solution for a Class of Extended Minimax Location Problem

We propose a proximal approach for solving a wide class of minimax location problems which in particular contains the round trip location problem. We show that a suitable reformulation of the problem allows to construct a Fenchel duality scheme the primal-dual optimality conditions of which can be solved by a proximal algorithm. This approach permits to solve problems for which distances are measured by mixed norms or gauges and to handle a large variety of convex constraints. Several numerical results are presented.

We propose an interactive method for decision making under uncertainty, where uncertainty is related to the lack of understanding about consequences of actions. Abstract We introduce a new interactive multiobjective optimization method operating in the objective space called Nonconvex Pareto Navigator . It extends the Pareto Navigator method for nonconvex problems. An approximation of the Pareto optimal front in the objective space is first generated with the PAINT method using a relatively small set of Pareto optimal outcomes that is assumed to be given or computed prior to the interaction with the decision maker. The use of balanced designs is generally advisable in experimental practice. In technological experiments, balanced designs optimize the exploitation of experimental resources, whereas in marketing research experiments they avoid erroneous conclusions caused by the misinterpretation of interviewed customers. Does optimal partitioning of color space account for universal color categorization?

A 2007 study by Regier, Kay, and Khetarpal purports to show that universal categories emerge as a result of optimal partitioning of color space. Regier, Kay, and Khetarpal only consider color categorizations of up to six categories. However, in most industrialized societies eleven color categories are observed. This paper shows that when applied to the case of eleven categories, Regier, Kay, and Khetarpal's optimality criterion yields unsatisfactory results. Applications of the criterion to the intermediate cases of seven, eight, nine, and ten color categories are also briefly considered and are shown to yield mixed results.
