Preventing early age chloride migration into low-carbon concrete

2019

The use of substituting cementitious materials (SCMs) to produce low-carbon concrete is escalating. This contributes to reducing the anthropogenic emission of CO2, and to reduce harmful temperature gradients during cement hydration in massive structures. Mature low-carbon concretes are known to perform well on both strength and durability. However, the maturity process is slow compared to that of standard concrete. Structures made from low-carbon concrete are subject to penetration of agents like chloride at early age, accelerating degrading processes. Chloride penetration is a major problem especially to infrastructure, due to seawater proximity and the use of de-icing agents. Solutions fo…

Multi-technical approach for the characterization of polychrome decorative surfaces at Spanish Mission Churches in Nueva Vizcaya (Chihuahua, Mexico)

2020

An interdisciplinary and multi-institutional group of science and art conservation specialists has provided new insight into the painting materials used in the polychrome walls and wooden ceilings in four seventeenth century Spanish colonial churches of Nueva Vizcaya (Chihuahua, Mexico). A multi-analytical study of the decorative surfaces was performed in situ using spectroscopic approaches (XRF, FORS), False Colour Infrared Reflectography – IRFC, as well as micro sampling for ATR-FTIR, LM and GC/MS laboratory analyses. A survey of natural resources were also studied by ATR-FTIR and LM to elucidate the natural occurrence of a select number of materials found in the surrounding areas of the …

Suppression of pigment interference in the gas chromatographic analysis of proteinaceous binding media in paintings with EDTA.

2004

A method to suppress the interference of pigments in the analysis of proteinaceous media used in paintings is presented in this paper. This method is based on the formation of metallic ion-ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) complexes previous to the derivatisation process, using ethyl chloroformate (ECF), to transform the amino acids in N(O,S)-ethoxycarbonyl (EOC) ethyl esters. Test specimens, containing different proteinaceous media such as albumin, porcine gelatine and casein mixed with lead white, chalk, verdigris and raw Sienna have been prepared for carrying out this study. Different pH conditions have been probed for the different pigments studied. Values of peak area ratio of ami…

Identification of diterpenes in canvas painting varnishes by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry with combined derivatisation.

2004

A derivatisation method that combines the formation of ethyl esters from the carboxylic groups and trimethylsilyl ethers from hydroxyl groups of the components of diterpenic resins is presented in this paper. This methodology involves two experimental steps: (1) formation of ethyl esters using ethyl chloroformate; and (2) the esterified compounds are lead to react with trimethylsilylimidazole to form the corresponding trimethylsilyl ethers. The main advantage of the proposed method is the possibility of performing simultaneously the analysis of amino acids from proteins, fatty acids from drying oils, and diterpenic compounds from natural resins usually found in works of art. This methodolog…

Study of Burseraceae resins used in binding media and varnishes from artworks by gas chromatography–mass spectrometry and pyrolysis-gas chromatograph…

2005

In the present work, a study attempting to characterize the Manila elemi and Mexican copal resins from the Burseraceae family, which are used as components of varnishes and binding media of artworks, has been carried out. A new GC-MS method involving the use of methyl chloroformate as derivatisation reagent has been proposed. A second method which uses pyrolysis-GC-MS and hexamethyldisilazane as derivatization reagent has also been applied. Characterization of the main components of the mono-, sesqui- and triterpenoid fractions occurring in the raw materials has been achieved. Both alpha- and beta-amyrin have been established as the major triterpenoid compounds occurring in these resins tog…

Chromosome painting of the pygmy tree shrew shows that no derived cytogenetic traits link primates and scandentia.

2012

We hybridized human chromosome paints on metaphases of the pygmy tree shrew (<i>Tupaia minor</i>, Scandentia). The lack of the ancestral mammalian 4/8 association in both Primates and Scandentia was long considered a cytogenetic landmark that phylogenetically linked these mammalian orders. However, our results show that the association 4/8 is present in <i>Tupaia </i>along with not previously reported associations for 1/18 and 7/10. Altogether there are 11 syntenic associations of human chromosome segments in the pygmy tree shrew karyotype: 1/18, 2/21, 3/21, 4/8, 7/10, 7/16, 11/20, 12/22 (twice), 14/15 and 16/19. Our data remove any cytogenetic evidence that Scandent…

Eight million years of maintained heterozygosity in chromosome homologs of cercopithecine monkeys

2020

In the Cercopithecini ancestor two chromosomes, homologous to human chromosomes 20 and 21, fused to form the Cercopithecini specific 20/21 association. In some individuals from the genus Cercopithecus, this association was shown to be polymorphic for the position of the centromere, suggesting centromere repositioning events. We set out to test this hypothesis by defining the evolutionary history of the 20/21 association in four Cercopithecini species from three different genera. The marker order of the various 20/21 associations was established using molecular cytogenetic techniques, including an array of more than 100 BACs. We discovered that five different forms of the 20/21 association w…

Study on the effects of chemical cleaning on pinaceae resin-based varnishes from panel and canvas paintings using pyrolysis-gas chromatography/mass s…

2006

Abstract Cleaning of varnish coatings is one of the most critical steps in the restoration treatment of paintings and characterization of physical and chemical processes involved in this practical procedure has attracted interest of scientists in the field of conservation. Evaluation of chemical cleaning methods based on the application of organic solvents and detergents on Pinaceae resin-based varnishes from panel and canvas paintings has been successfully carried out using pyrolysis-gas chromatograpy/mass spectrometry (Py-GC/MS). The proposed method includes the on-line derivatization of the diterpenoid resin using hexamethyldisilazane (HMDS). Analyses performed on a series of model varni…

Il nobile casato dei Ventimiglia e Donna Felice Ventimiglia Barberini

2017
