Multivariate analyses for the study of behavior: an integrated approach

Simple quantitative evaluations of isolate behavioral elements (i.e. frequencies, durations, per cent distributions) are not representative of the whole behavioral structure [1]. As suggested in a landmark paper from Spruijt and Gispen [2], it is only through the evaluation of the inter-relations among behavioral elements that it is possible to explore behavior from very different points of view, greatly beyond what the human eye can intuitively interpret. In the present paper a brief outline of different multivariate techniques for behavioral analyses will be presented in the attempt to underline the feasibility of their integration.

The electrophoretic patterns of tears from patients with dry-eye disease (n = 43) and from healthy subjects (n = 17) were analyzed by means of multivariate statistical methods and an artificial neural network (ANN), following sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE). From each electrophoretic pattern a data set was created, randomly divided into test (unknown samples) and training patterns (known samples), with ANN training by one of these sets. Abstract COVID-19 disrupted international tourism worldwide, subsequently presenting forecasters with a challenging conundrum. In this competition, we predict international arrivals for 20 destinations in two phases: (i) Ex post forecasts pre-COVID; (ii) Ex ante forecasts during and after the pandemic up to end 2021. Our results show that univariate combined with cross-sectional hierarchical forecasting techniques (THieF-ETS) outperform multivariate models pre-COVID.
