Corrigendum to “Polyvascular subclinical atherosclerosis in familial hypercholesterolemia: The role of cholesterol burden and gender” [Nutr Metab Car…

2019

International audience; Background and aim: Heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (HeFH) is a genetic disease characterized by a heterogeneous phenotype. The assessment of cardiovascular (CV) risk is challenging for HeFH. Cholesterol burden (CB) allows to estimate the lifelong exposure to high levels of cholesterol. The aim of this study was to analyze the distribution of subclinical athero-sclerosis and the relationship between atherosclerosis and the CB in a sample of HeFH patients, focusing on sex-related differences. Methods and Results: 154 asymptomatic HeFH subjects underwent coronary-artery-calcium score (CACs) and Doppler ultrasound of carotid and femoral arteries. Yearly lipid…

ALTERED RATIO BETWEEN AXON CALIBER AND MYELIN THICKNESS IN SURAL NERVES OF CHILDREN

1978

ABSTRACT Maturation of myelin sheaths in normal sural nerves of children proceeds more slowly than axon growth. This asynchronous development of axons and myelin sheaths results in a statistically significant change of the ratio between axon caliber and myelin thickness during normal development. Therefore, myelin thickness of individual nerve fibers must be related to the size of the axons as well as to the age of the individuals studied. Abnormalities of the relationship between myelin thickness and axon diameter (primary hypomyelination of large, or small, or all fibers) were clearly identified in cases with metachromatic leukodystrophy, KRABBE's, DEJERINE-SOTTAS’, COCKAYNE'S and SANFILI…

Pressure Monitoring of Intraneural an Perineural Injections Into the Median, Radial, and Ulnar Nerves; Lessons From a Cadaveric Study

2015

Background: Nerve damage after regional anesthesia has been of great concern to anesthetists. Various modalities have been suggested to recognize and prevent its incidence. An understudied area is the measurement of intraneural pressure during peripheral nerve blockade. Previous investigations have produced contradicting results with only one study being conducted on human cadavers. Objectives: The purpose of this investigation was to systematically record intraneural and perineural injection pressures on the median, ulnar, and radial nerves exclusively as a primary outcome. Materials and Methods: Ultrasonography-guided injections of 1 mL of 0.9% NaCl over ten seconds were performed on phen…

THe role of autologous nerve fragments implantation in enhancing peripheral nerve regeneration

2014

ntroduction: The aim of this study was to assess the effect of seeding a nerve suture with autologous nerve fragments. Our hypothesis is that the fragments could improve axonal regeneration. Back to Top | Article Outline Material and Methods: On 20 Sprague-Dawley rats a 15mm sciatic nerve defect was created and grafted. In the study group (n=10) a 1mm nerve segment was minced and seeded around the distal suture. In the control group (n=10) no fragments were seeded. Rats were sacrificed at 4 (n= 10) and 12 weeks (n= 10) and number of regenerated fibers, fiber area and density, Soleus and Gastrocnemius muscles mass indexes, and walking track analysis in the 12 weeks group were evaluated. Perifērās neiropātijas izmeklēšana hemodialīzes pacientiem

2018

Cytotoxic, immunomodulatory, antimycotic, and antiviral activities of semisynthetic 14-hydroxyabietane derivatives and triptoquinone C-4 epimers

2013

A series of C14-hydroxy derivatives of dehydroabietic acid were synthesised from commercial abietic acid and evaluated for their cytotoxic, antimycotic, and antiviral activities. From these C14-hydroxy derivatives, triptoquinone C-4 epimers were obtained and their immunomodulatory activity was additionally evaluated. None of the tested compounds showed antiviral activity against herpes simplex virus type 1 (HHV-1), and nor did they display antimycotic activity against certain Aspergillus, spp. except for one compound, abieta-8,11,13-trien-14,18-diol. Interestingly, two triptoquinone epimers showed cytotoxic activity, and one of them induced mitochondrial potential loss, DNA damage and cell …

The role of microRNAs in cancer: diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers and targets of therapies

2012

Introduction: miRNAs are noncoding RNAs that target specific mRNA with subsequent regulation of particular genes, implicated in various biological processes. In cancer, miRNAs could show a different expression from normal tissues. miRNAs have a role as oncogenes when they target tumor suppressor genes and similarly they are tumor suppressors when they target oncogenes. Areas covered: In this review, areas covered include the role of miRNAs in cancer diagnosis, prognosis and research for achievement of therapeutic strategies implicating miRNAs in oncology. As biogenesis of miRNAs is fundamental to understand their usefulness, this has also been discussed. Both miRNA expression profiles in ca…

A small molecule, orally active, α 4 β 1 /α 4 β 7 dual antagonist reduces leukocyte infiltration and airway hyper-responsiveness in an experimental m…

2006

α4β1 and α4β7 integrins are preferentially expressed on eosinophils and mononuclear leukocytes and play critical roles in their recruitment to inflammatory sites. We investigated the effects of TR14035, a small molecule, α4β1/α4β7 dual antagonist, in a rat model of allergic asthma. Actively sensitized rats were challenged with aerosol antigen or saline on day 21, and the responses evaluated 24 and 48-h later. TR14035 (3 mg kg−1, p.o.) was given 1-h before and 4-h after antigen or saline challenge. Airway hyper-responsiveness to intravenous 5-hydroxytryptamine was suppressed in TR14035-treated rats. Eosinophil, mononuclear cell and neutrophil counts, and eosinophil peroxidase and protein con…

The significance of plasma kinins in intestinal obstruction and peritonitis

1969

The present concept of plasmakinin action suggests that they may also play an important role in the pathophysiology of intestinal obstruction and peritonitis. Since the assay of the kinins is still something of a problem, and since the percursor kallikrein can be determined by a standardized method, we studied the titers of kallikrein in the peripheral and portal circulation in dogs with experimental intestinal obstruction and in patients with these disorders. Significantly higher levels of kallikrein were found in intestinal obstruction, particularly in obstruction with strangulation (Fig. 1).
