New investigations in the North-East quarter of Motya. The archaic cemetery and Building J

In June 2013 the University of Palermo excavations on Motya were resumed. The main goal of the new project is to investigate the north-east quarter of the Phoenician settlement and its urban development since the time of its foundation. Two main areas of excavation were opened. In the early cemetery sixteen cremation burials of the archaic period were uncovered. The most striking discoveries, never attested before, were a tomb containing Hellenistic offerings, and the occurrence of archaic infant cremations. Peripheral dynamic movements are used as part of postoperative protocols and for preventing vascular complications during bed rest. The effects of peripheral movements have not been studied. The purposes of these studies were to explain the effects of peripheral dynamic movements on lower limb circulation. The aim was also to explain how other factors like sex, age, BMI, medication, smoking, sports activity etc. affect the circulation. Standard clinical neurophysiological assessment of somatosensory pathways by sensory evoked potentials (SEPs) is limited to the tactile and proprioceptive systems consisting of large fibers in the peripheral nerve, the dorsal columns of the spinal cord and the medial lemniscus in the brainstem. Cutaneous Exposure to the Superantigen Staphylococcal Enterotoxin B Elicits a T-Cell-Dependent Inflammatory Response

We analyzed the impact of superantigens secreted by skin-colonizing Staphylococci on the skin and the associated lymphoid tissue following epicutaneous application and intracutaneous injection of small amounts of staphylococcal enterotoxin B (SEB). A single intracutaneous injection of 50 ng of SEB elicited a strong inflammatory response in the skin of BALB/c mice. Chemically driven phase separation in black lipid membranes and its coupling to membrane functions

Abstract We analysed the single-channel current fluctuations of gramicidin in bimolecular lipid membranes in order to demonstrate (i) the influence of protein binding to the lateral organisation of a mixed membrane, and (ii) how this couples to the function of the ionophore. Examples of phase separations induced by synthetic polyelectrolytes, as models for peripheral membrane proteins, and specific ligand-receptor interactions are presented and discussed in view of the important lateral order-function relationship in biomembranes.

Abstract nterleukin-8 (IL-8) is produced by many cell types upon stimulation with bacterial products or inflammation-associated cytokines such as tumor necrosis factor-alpha and IL-1. Interferons (IFNs) represent another group of cytokines that are induced by similar stimuli in inflammatory reactions. We show now that type-I IFNs are potent inhibitors of IL-8 expression in vitro and in vivo. Vulnerability of peripheral catecholaminergic neurons to MPTP is not regulated by alpha-synuclein.

Although generally considered a prototypical movement disorder, Parkinson's disease is commonly associated with a broad-spectrum of non-motor symptoms, including autonomic dysfunctions caused by significant alterations in catecholaminergic neurons of the peripheral sympathetic nervous system. Here we present evidence that alpha-synuclein is highly expressed by sympathetic ganglion neurons throughout embryonic and postnatal life and that it is found in tyrosine hydroxylase-positive sympathetic fibers innervating the heart of adult mice.
