A new liquid surface neutron reflectometer and its application to the study of DPPC in a monolayer at the air/water interface

A constant wavelength neutron reflectometer is described. Using this reflectometer, the neutron reflectivities from phosphatidylcholine monolayers in the highly condensed LC phase on ultra pure H2O and D2O have been measured on a Wilhelmy film balance. The neutron reflectivities have been carefully compared with those obtained by the X-ray method applied to the same monolayer under similar conditions. A new approach to analyzing a combined set of data composed of X-ray and neutron reflectivities has been used. Controlling the Interactions between Soft Colloids via Surface Adsorption

By employing monomer-resolved computer simulations and analytical considerations based on polymer scaling theory, we analyze the conformations and interactions of multiarm star polymers strongly adsorbed on a smooth, two-dimensional plane. We find a stronger stretching of the arms as well as a stronger repulsive, effective interaction than in the three dimensional case. In particular, the star size scales with the number of arms $f$ as $\sim f^{1/4}$ and the effective interaction as $\sim f^{2}$, as opposed to $\sim f^{1/5}$ and $\sim f^{3/2}$, respectively, in three dimensions. Role of Diffusion in Superplasticity and Brittleness of Fine-Grained Binary Eutectics

Mechanical properties of interphase boundaries (IB), stability of defects and microstructure in heavily deformed binary eutectics (Al-Sn, Zn-Sn, Pb-Sn, Cd-Sn, Bi-Sn) have been investigated at room temperature. Experiments were carried out on atomically clean surfaces of alloys and on bimetallic joints with clean interface. It has been shown that after severe deformation the phases are strengthened and relaxation processes occur mainly on the boundaries in all eutectics. Biomechanical comparison between the modified rolling-hitch and the modified finger-trap suture techniques

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to characterize the biomechanical effect of two grasping suture techniques used during ligament reconstruction: the modified rolling-hitch (MRH) and the modified finger-trap (MFT). Methods: Flexor profundus tendons were harvested from fresh pig hind-leg trotters. Each specimen was mounted on an electro-mechanic universal testing machine (Instron 3367). In half of all tendons (15 specimens), the suture was passed around the tendon following the MRH knot (Group 1). Long-Term Potentiation in Slices from Human Hippocampus

Long-term potentiation (LTP) has been observed in slices from human hippocampi removed for intractable epilepsy using extra- and intracellular recording in vitro. Furthermore the effects of several neuroactive substances with possible relevance for synaptic plasticity was investigated. Human hippocampal neurones in vitro display properties very similar to the respective rodent cells.

Ribbon synapses differ from conventional chemical synapses in that they contain, within the cloud of synaptic vesicles (SV's), a specialized synaptic body, most often termed synaptic ribbon (SR). This body assumes various forms. Reconstructions reveal that what appear as rod- or ribbon-like profiles in sections are in fact rectangular or horseshoe-shaped plates. Moreover, spherical, T-shaped, table-shaped, and highly pleomorphic bodies may be present. Cytotoxic geranylflavonoids from Bonannia graeca

The analysis of the aerial parts of Bonannia graeca led to the isolation and characterization of two new polar geranylated flavonoids (6 and 7). The structure elucidation was performed by extensive spectroscopic methods (1D and 2D NMR) and comparison with literature data. All natural flavonoids isolated from B. graeca (1–7) and some synthetic derivatives (8–11) were tested for cytotoxic activity against four human tumor cell lines. Preliminary structure-activity relationship correlations are discussed.

Abstract The membrane-bound tumor-associated glycoprotein MUC1 is aberrantly glycosylated in cancer cells compared with normal cells, and is therefore considered an attractive target for cancer immunotherapy. However, tumor-associated glycopeptides from MUC1 do not elicit a sufficiently robust immune response. Therefore, antitumor vaccines were developed, which consist of MUC1 glycopeptides as the B epitopes and immune-stimulating toll-like receptor 2 (TLR 2) lipopeptide ligands.
