The use of ionizing radiation in order to initiate polymerization of suitable monomers has found increased interest in the last two decades due to its several advantages. In this work, carbon fiber composites through gamma radiation polymerization of epoxy matrices have been produced for aerospace and advanced automotive applications. Composite samples were produced by irradiation at room temperature using different radiation doses and, as reference, thermal curing of the same epoxy resin formulations was also carried out. A facile and reproducible one-step pathway has been developed for preparing ordered arrays of mesoporous carbon nanostructures within the pores of anodized aluminium oxide (AAO) membranes, through the confined self-assembly of phenol/formaldehyde resol and amphiphilic copolymer templates. Growth of polyaniline films on porous silicon layers

Abstract The electrochemical deposition of electrically active polyaniline films (PANI) onto the surface of porous silicon (PS) layers formed at p- and n-type silicon wafers has been studied using cyclic voltammetry measurements and infrared spectroscopy. The process of PANI deposition is easier on the PS layers formed at n-Si wafers and essentially retarded at PS/p-Si samples, presumably due to a parallel reaction of oxygen evolution. The polymerization reaction starts at the pore bottoms and propagates towards the external surface of the PS layer. Electric conduction of PS/PANI composites is lower than of uncovered PS layers.

Actually, the setting of cement is due to ionic correlation forces between highly negatively charged C-S-H nanoparticles throughout a calcium rich solution. The main drawback of this strong attraction is its very short range that results in low elastic deformation of hydrated cementitious materials. Arabinoxylans (AXs) are byproducts of the cereal milling industry. To obtain high-value products, AXs have been used as a film-forming agent. Hence, AX-based films are poor water vapor barriers. The objectives of this study were to graft omega-3 (omega3) fatty acids onto AX polymeric chains by using two new technologies: cold plasma and electron beam (EB) irradiation. Results show that the surface hydrophobicity of the modified films is higher than that of a waxy coating or a low-density polyethylene (LDPE) film. In addition, FTIR spectroscopy analysis reveals vibration bands attributed to new chemical functions. Finally, a decrease in water vapor permeability (WVP) is obtained for the film…
