Down-regulation of Endogenous Amyloid Precursor Protein Processing due to Cellular Aging
2005
Processing of amyloid precursor protein (APP) is a well acknowledged central pathogenic mechanism in Alzheimer disease. However, influences of age-associated cellular alterations on the biochemistry of APP processing have not been studied in molecular detail so far. Here, we report that processing of endogenous APP is down-regulated during the aging of normal human fibroblasts (IMR-90). The generation of intracellular APP cleavage products C99, C83, and AICD gradually declines with increasing life span and is accompanied by a reduced secretion of soluble APP (sAPP) and sAPPalpha. Further, the maturation of APP was reduced in senescent cells, which has been shown to be directly mediated by a…
Experiences of students with HIV/AIDS in rural, post-conflict Uganda
2015
The roll out of Anti-Retroviral Therapy across Sub-Saharan Africa has given rise to a new generation of adolescents that previously would not have survived into their teen years. The aim of this research is to give voice to these young people, specifically HIV positive students, in the rural, post-conflict area of Katakwi, Uganda. Through the lens of empowerment, which focuses on participation, capacity building, leadership potential, and relationships, this research examines the factors in these students’ lives that contribute to their empowerment, or the absence of these factors that then have the potential to disempower them. It considers the way the students themselves see both the prot…

Small bowel obstruction after laparoscopic gastrectomy: An atypical clinical presentation. Report of a case
2020
Abstract Introduction Postoperative adhesions represent the most common cause of acute small bowel obstruction (80%) and are usually a consequence of abdomino-pelvic surgery performed with open technique. Presentation of case A 45-year-old black man arrived at the emergency room with abdominal pain and distension three months after laparoscopic distal gastrectomy with Roux-en-Y anastomosis performed for benign pyloric stenosis. CT abdominal scan revealed some air-fluid levels in the center of the abdomen with distension of proximal jejunal loops caused by intestinal adhesions. Laparoscopic adhesiolysis was performed to restore the intestinal transit. Discussion The formation of adhesions is…
Endovenous ablation of refluxing saphenous and perforating veins.
2017
Abstract. Since the end of the nineties endovenous thermal ablation and more recently non-thermal, non-tumescent techniques have been developed and improved. Until now, because of their favourable side effect profile in conjunction to sustained efficacy, in many countries they already replaced high ligation and stripping in the treatment of refluxing saphenous veins as well as for treatment of perforators and selected tributaries. Now, studies and comparative trials are available with long-term follow-ups for most of the techniques, providing valid data on occlusion and reflux rates, side effect profiles, and health related quality of life.
Ricerche in tema di società questuarie
2019
2003
Aim Acid etched surface implants determine high clinical success rates, but little information is available about early loading in the posterior region of the maxilla, area at risk of failure. The aim of this work is to present two case reports of oral rehabilitation through acid etched surface implants (Osseotite, Implant Innovations - 3i, West Palm Beach, FL) loaded two months after insertion in the posterior maxilla. Materials and methods The success of Osseotite implants was assessed 12 and 24 months after prosthetic loading according to Albrektsson et al. criteria (1986). Results No clinical or radiographic signs of implant failure were observed during the two years follow-up. Conclusi…
Effects of post-growth annealing on structural and compositional properties of the Co2Cr0.6Fe0.4Al surface and its relevance for the surface electron…
2009
In this study we investigate the influence of post-growth annealing on different Co2Cr0.6Fe0.4Al samples. We find strong changes in the geometric surface structure as well as in the element specific concentrations during the annealing process. These irreversible changes go in hand with characteristic changes in the electron spin polarization (ESP) at the surface: as observed in Cinchetti et al (2007 J. Phys. D: Appl. Phys. 40 1544), the iron buffered sample shows the largest spin polarization at the Fermi level. The latter remains positive as a consequence of the reduced density of states for the minority carriers due to the predicted minority gap, which can be clearly seen for all samples …
The relation between neuronal chloride transporter activities, GABA inhibition, and neuronal activity
2020
Abstract The intracellular chloride concentration [Cl−]i in neurons is regulated by a set of transmembrane transporters, with the Cl−-loader NKCC1 and the Cl−-extruder KCC2 as most relevant members. The expression of these transporters is tightly regulated, with the general trend that KCC2 expression is low in immature neurons, which are thus characterized by a high [Cl−]i. As [Cl−]i is the main factor determining the polarity of GABAergic responses, such a high [Cl−]i is related to depolarizing GABAergic responses. However, depolarizing GABAergic responses are not per se excitatory, but can also contribute to shunting inhibition. The excitatory/inhibitory action of GABAergic responses is m…
