Do orthotactics and phonology constrain the transposed-letter effect?

2008

Transposing two internal letters of a word produces a perceptually similar item (as in cholocate). To determine the precise nature of the encoding of letter position within a word, it is important to examine the role of orthography and phonology in the transposed-letter effect. Experiment 1 examined whether transposed-letter effects are affected by the legality of the letter transposition in a masked priming paradigm (e.g., comsos-COSMOS vs. vebral-VERBAL; ‘ms’ is an illegal bigram in Spanish). Results showed a greater transposed-letter priming effect when the transposed bigram was illegal than when it was legal. In Experiment 2, we examine the role of phonology by exploiting the context-de…

Pronunciation Learning Environment: EFL Students' Cognitions of In-class and Out-of-class Factors Affecting Pronunciation Acquisition

2018

The way a foreign language (L2) learner perceives his or her educational environment may affect their processes of L2 acquisition. The aim of the study presented in this paper is to explore English as a foreign language (EFL) students’ perceptions of their teachers’ pronunciation, in-class and outside-class factors regarding pronunciation acquisition, such as pronunciation activities, recordings, focus on form, peer pronunciation, listening to music, to mention a few. A group of 89 participants responded to a survey, via which the data necessary to respond to the following three research questions was collected. How do EFL learners perceive their teachers’ pronunciation? What is the relatio…

"Understand and be understood" : English pronunciation teaching in Finnish upper secondary schools assessed by university students of English

2016

University students' attitudes towards phonemic transcription as a teaching method : a survey of English students

2017

Foneeminen tarkekirjoitus on pitkään ollut osa ääntämisen opetusta. Se on ainut tapa, jolla sanojen ja puhunnosten ääntämisasuun voidaan viitata ilman tulkinnanvaraa, ja lisäksi yksi harvoista visuaalisista apuvälineistä, jotka soveltuvat erityisesti ääntämisen opetukseen. Foneemisessa tarkekirjoituksessa käytetään kansainvälisen foneettisen aakkoston (IPA) symboleja. Tämän tutkimuksen aiheena on englannin kielen opettajaopiskelijoiden asenteet foneemista tarkekirjoitusta kohtaan oppimisvälineenä. Tutkimuksen päätavoitteena on selvittää, kuinka paljon ja millä tavoilla opiskelijat kokevat hyötyneensä foneemisen tarkekirjoituksen opiskelusta ääntämyksen opiskelussa. Lisäksi pyritään selvittä…

A Review of Selected Empirical Research on Pronunciation Learning Strategies and Language Anxiety

2016

The previous chapter has outlined the concept of language anxiety, together with its sources and impact on L2 learning processes, particularly in the realm of L2 pronunciation acquisition. In this chapter, a review of recent empirical studies on pronunciation learning strategies, foreign language anxiety and oral performance encompassing L2 pronunciation is discussed in order to delineate the background for the empirical research assumptions and the directions taken during their investigation.

Multimedia in Learning English as a Foreign Language as Preferred by German, Spanish, and Polish Teenagers

2014

This paper presents the findings of a small-scale study investigating the preferences of German, Polish, and Spanish teenage English as a foreign language (EFL) learners concerning their use of multimedia, such as Skype, Facebook, YouTube, e-mails, and TV-programmes in learning English. A group of 88 respondents was requested to complete an on-line questionnaire in order to specify how often some selected types of multimedia are used by adolescents in their autonomous EFL learning, and to determine their views on the extent to which some selected multimedia affect the development of their language skills (reading, writing, listening, and speaking) and their English pronunciation. The outcom…
