Autofluorescence Imaging of the Skin Is an Objective Non-Invasive Technique for Diagnosing Pseudoxanthoma Elasticum

2021

Pseudoxanthoma elasticum (PXE) is a rare multisystemic autosomal recessive connective tissue disease. In most cases, skin manifestations of PXE are the first to develop, followed later by severe ocular and cardiovascular complications. In our present study, in addition to dermoscopy, we introduced novel techniques, autofluorescence (AF) and diffuse reflectance (DR) imaging for the assessment of affected skin sites of five PXE patients. PXE-affected skin areas in most skin sites showed a previously observed pattern upon dermoscopic examination. With the novel imaging, PXE-affected skin lesions displayed high AF intensity. During our measurements, significantly higher mean, minimum and maximu…

Ultrasound Imaging Evaluation of Textural Features in Athletes with Soleus Pathology—A Novel Case-Control Study

2021

Background: the aim of this study was to compare the echotexture of patients with soleus muscle injury and age matched controls. Methods: a sample of 62 athletes was recruited at the private clinic and was divided in two group: a healthy group (n=31) and a soleus pathology group whose athletes had soleus muscle injury, located in the central tendon (n=31). The muscle thickness (MTh), echointensity (EI) and echovariation (EV) were analyzed. An intra-rater reliability test (Intraclass Correlation Coefficient-ICC) was performed in order to analyze the reliability of the values of the measurements. Results: Sociodemographic variables did not show statistically significant differences (p &gt

Determination of Human Granulocyte Elastase by the Immunoactivation Method on the Hitachi® 717 Automated Analyser

1991

This paper describes a fully mechanized homogeneous immunoassay using the immunoactivation method for the rapid and specific determination of human granulocyte elastase (EC 3.4.21.37) in plasma. The method uses anti-elastase antibody fragments from sheep, conjugated to horseradish peroxidase. These enzyme-antibody conjugates bind to the elastase-alpha 1-proteinase inhibitor complex present in plasma. A separate sample blank with non-specific sheep antibody fragments conjugated to horseradish peroxidase corrects for errors introduced by the sample matrix. Measurements were performed with the clinical chemistry analyser Hitachi 717. A single determination can be performed in 10 min, requiring…

Ceftazidime Determination in Serum by High-pressure Liquid Chromatography

2004

A rapid and sensitive high-pressure liquid chromatographic method with simple sample preparation was developed for the quantitative analysis of the beta-lactam antibiotic ceftazidime (CAS 78439-06-2, Fortum). A good linear relationship was established between the peak area and the amount of ceftazidime injected over a concentration range of 1 to 200 microg/ml. The detection limit of the method was calculated to be 0.9 microg/ml. Stability was shown at 4 degrees C and at -196 degrees C for time periods of 2 h and 84 days, respectively.

Concerted actions of insulin-like growth factor 1, testosterone, and estradiol on peripubertal bone growth: a 7-year longitudinal study.

2011

A better understanding of how bone growth is regulated during peripuberty is important for optimizing the attainment of peak bone mass and for the prevention of osteoporosis in later life. In this report we used hierarchical models to evaluate the associations of insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1), estradiol (E(2) ), and testosterone (T) with peripubertal bone growth in a 7-year longitudinal study. Two-hundred and fifty-eight healthy girls were assessed at baseline (mean age 11.2 years) and at 1, 2, 3.5, and 7 years. Serum concentrations of IGF-1, E(2) , and T were determined. Musculoskeletal properties in the left lower leg were measured using peripheral quantitative computed tomography …

Analytical Study of Raw Materials of Zinc Oxide Used for Enamels on Industrial Ceramics: Quantitative Analysis of Zinc, Lead, and Sulfur in These Sam…

2006

Abstract An analytical study is carried out to optimize X‐ray fluorescence (XRF) and flame atomic absorption spectrometry (FAAS) quantitative analysis of Zn, Pb, and S in ZnO samples commonly used to obtain industrial ceramic enamels. Pb and S in the raw materials often contaminate ZnO and are very detrimental in industrial applications. Thus, very accurate analytical determination of these elements in ceramic samples is extremely important. First of all, a mineralogical study by X‐ray diffraction (XRD) on the different components in these raw materials and the materials produced during the firing process is performed in order to establish the mineral forms in a reference sample for analysi…

The usage of Twitter from the Spanish media during the elections

2018

The stability of genetic variance?covariance matrix in the presence of selection

2007

Quantitative genetics provides one of the most important frameworks in which evolutionary biology and evolution can be studied. The primary goals of this field of study include the attempts to understand the history of selection that has resulted in the multiple phenotypic traits we observe today, and to predict the future trajectory of the multiple traits. Within quantitative genetics it is the genetic variance–covariance matrix G which summarizes the additive genetic variation of multiple traits and the genetic covariances between the traits, together with selection that control the direction and rate of evolution. The product of these two elements determine the response to selection from…

Semiflexible polymers confined in a slit pore with attractive walls: two-dimensional liquid crystalline order versus capillary nematization

2017

Semiflexible polymers under good solvent conditions interacting with attractive planar surfaces are investigated by Molecular Dynamics (MD) simulations and classical Density Functional Theory (DFT). A bead-spring type potential complemented by a bending potential is used, allowing variation of chain stiffness from completely flexible coils to rod-like polymers whose persistence length by far exceeds their contour length. Solvent is only implicitly included, monomer-monomer interactions being purely repulsive, while two types of attractive wall-monomer interactions are considered: (i) a strongly attractive Mie-type potential, appropriate for a strictly structureless wall, and (ii) a corrugat…

Characteristic Length Scales and Radial Monomer Density Profiles of Molecular Bottle-Brushes: Simulation and Experiment

2010

Extensive Monte Carlo simulations are presented for bottle-brush polymers under good solvent conditions, using the bond fluctuation model on the simple cubic lattice. Varying the backbone length (from Nb = 67 to Nb = 259 effective monomers) as well as the side chain length (from N = 6 to N = 48), for a physically reasonable grafting density of one chain per backbone monomer, we find that the structure factor describing the total scattering from the bottle-brush provides an almost perfect match for some combinations of (Nb, N) to experimental data of Rathgeber et al. [J. Chem. Phys. 2005, 122, 124904], when we adjust the length scale of the simulation to reproduce the experimental gyration r…
