A new method for creating sparse design velocity fields
2006
We present a novel method for the computation of mesh node sensitivities with respect to the boundary node movement. The sensitivity field is sparse in a sense that movement of each boundary node affects only given amount of inner mesh nodes, which can result in considerable savings in the storage space. The method needs minimal control from the user, and it does not place any restrictions (such as block structure) on the mesh. Use of the method is demonstrated with a shape optimization problem using CAD-free parametrization. A solution to the classical die-swell free boundary problem by coupling the boundary node locations with the state variables is also presented. In that case, sparsity …
Place-Keeping and Ecological Services. Una prospettiva di Studi
2016
The Residual Shear Strength of the Shaly and Sandy Facies of the Opalinus Clay
2018
The paper presents a comprehensive laboratory campaign carried out with the aim to asses the residual strength of the Opalinus Clay. Ring shear tests with vertical effective stress up to 1 MPa were performed on remoulded samples of two different facies of the Opalinus Clay. Test results show that the «Shaly» facies is characterized by a low range of variation of residual strength while the strength of the «Sandy» facies is very sensitive to the variation of grain size distribution. Microstructural analyses (SEM) suggest that the difference in the observed mechanical behavior of the two facies can be related to different particles arrangements along the shear surfaces.
Fault Diagnosis for Nonlinear Hydraulic-Mechanical Drilling Pipe Handling System
2011
Leakage and increased friction are common faults in hydraulic cylinders that can have serious consequences if they are not detected at early stage. In this paper, the design of a fault detector for a nonlinear hydraulic mechanical system is presented. By considering the system in steady state, two residual signals are generated and analysed with a composite hypothesis test which accommodates for unknown parameters. The resulting detector is able to detect abrupt changes in leakage or friction given the noisy pressure and position measurements. Test rig measurements validate the properties of residuals and high fidelity simulation and experimental results demonstrate the performance and feas…
On the Measurement and Prediction of the Out-of-Plane Displacement Surrounding Cold-Expanded Holes
2010
Experimental measurements of the out-of-plane displacement surrounding cold-expanded holes in a 6082-T6 aluminum alloy were made with a 3D optical scanner using the technique of the encoded light-pattern projection in white light. The measured surface profiles have shown the thickness discontinuity along the hole edge due to the effect of the split in the sleeve. An analytical–numerical solution of the out-of-plane displacement is presented based on existing analytical models. Thus, the results given by the analytical model were then compared with the experimental data and with a finite element (FE) model that simulates the cold-expansion process. The location of the elastic–plastic boundar…
Two-Quasiparticle Mixing in Odd-Odd Nuclei
2007
In Chap. 16 the residual Hamiltonian was used to mix proton-proton and neutron—neutron two-quasiparticle configurations. The resulting wave functions described states in even-even open-shell nuclei. In this chapter we develop a corresponding formalism, the proton-neutron QTDA, for mixing proton-neutron two-quasiparticle configurations. This mixing produces wave functions that describe states in odd-odd open-shell nuclei. The quasiparticles are obtained from a BCS calculation for an even-even reference nucleus next to the odd-odd nucleus of interest.
Circulating tumor DNA to detect minimal residual disease, response to adjuvant therapy, and identify patients at high risk of recurrence in patients …
2020
4009 Background: The clinical utility of tracking circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) as a non-invasive biomarker for detecting minimal residual disease (MRD) and stratifying patients based on their risk of developing relapse has been well established in colorectal cancer (CRC). This study evaluates the detection and longitudinal monitoring of ctDNA in CRC patients pre- and post-operatively, during and after adjuvant chemotherapy (ACT). Methods: The prospective, multicenter cohort study recruited patients (n = 193) diagnosed with resected stage I-III CRC. Plasma samples (n = 1052) were collected at various timepoints with a median follow up of 21.6 months (4.6-38.5 months). Individual tumors and…
Start-Up of Chitosan-Assisted Anaerobic Sludge Bed Reactors Treating Light Oxygenated Solvents under Intermittent Operation
2021
Quality of the granular sludge developed during the start-up of anaerobic up-flow sludge bed reactors is of crucial importance to ensure the process feasibility of treating industrial wastewater such as those containing solvents. In this study, the microbial granule formation from suspended-growth biomass was investigated in two chitosan-assisted reactors. These reactors operated mimicking industrial sites working with night closures treating a mixture of ethanol, ethyl acetate, and 1-ethoxy-2-propanol. Each reactor operated under different hydrodynamic regimes typical from UASB (R1: <
A new Collinear Apparatus for Laser Spectroscopy and Applied Science (COALA).
2020
We present a new collinear laser spectroscopy setup that has been designed to overcome systematic uncertainty limits arising from high-voltage and frequency measurements, beam superposition, and collisions with residual gas that are present in other installations utilizing this technique. The applied methods and experimental realizations are described, including an active stabilization of the ion-source potential, new types of ion sources that have not been used for collinear laser spectroscopy so far, dedicated installations for pump-and-probe measurements, and a versatile laser system referenced to a frequency comb. The advanced setup enables us to routinely determine transition frequenci…
Impact of Superfinish Turning on Surface Integrity of Pure Copper
2011
Abstract The presented study deals with comprehension of relationships between machining cutting conditions and physical-chemical properties linked with surface integrity. A multi-physics model is presented to calculate residual stress, temperature and dislocation fields in the machined material. This model includes both thermal-mechanical, structural evolution and dynamic recristallisation approaches. The model was applied to pure copper after superfinish turning. Good agreement was found between numerical values and experimental ones. This paper also presents a work on the impact of mechanical and microstructural changes induced by machining on the electrochemical behaviour and corrosion …
