Multi-responsive copolymers: using thermo-, light- and redox stimuli as three independent inputs towards polymeric information processing

2011

We report on triple responsive polymers, exhibiting a distinct and reversible lower critical solution temperature in water that can be altered by light and redox stimuli, and we suggest their evaluation for molecular information processing.

Effect of 15% carbamide peroxide bleaching gel on color stability of giomer and microfilled composite resin: an in vitro comparison

2011

Objectives: The effect of 15% carbamide peroxide bleaching gel on color stability and surface topography of a giomer and a microfilled composite resin was evaluated in the present in vitro study. Study design: Forty discs measuring 10 mm in diameter and 1 mm in thickness were prepared from a giomer and a microfilled composite resin. Each material yielded 20 discs with completely smooth surfaces. Then a spectrophotometer was used to measure L* (lightness), a* (redness, greenness) and b* (blueness, yellowness) color coordinates of all the discs. Subsequently, the specimens were subjected to 15% carbamide peroxide bleaching gel. After measuring the color coordinates once again, color changes (…

Interactions of liposomes and hydrophobically-modified poly-(N-isopropylacrylamides): an attempt to model the cytoskeleton

1993

The interactions of small unilamellar vesicles (SUV) and water-soluble copolymers were studied by fluorescence spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and quasi-elastic light scattering (QELS). The anchoring onto liposomal bilayer membranes of copolymers of N-isopropylacrylamide, N-(2-(1-naphthyl)ethyl)-N-n-octadecylacrylamide and or N-[4-(1-pyrenyl)butyl]-N-n-octadecylacrylamide (0.5 mol% of the octadecylacrylamide comonomer) was monitored by non-radiative energy transfer between excited naphthalene and pyrene. The anchoring process occurred on zwitterionic lecithin liposomes and on negatively charged phosphatidic acid liposomes, whether the bilayer was in the crystalline or …

Epiphany root canal sealer prepared with resinous solvent is irritating to rat subcutaneous tissues.

2011

Objective: This study assessed the biocompatibility of the Epiphany endodontic sealer prepared with resinous solvent of Epiphany system (Thinning resin) in rat subcutaneous tissues. Study Design: Polyethylene tubes were filled with the sealer and 4 groups were established: GI, Epiphany prepared with 1 drop of resinous solvent (RS); GII, Epiphany prepared with 1 drop of RS and photoactivated; GIII, Epiphany associated with self-etch primer and prepared with 1 drop of RS; GIV, Epiphany associated with self-etch primer, prepared with 1 drop of RS and photoactivated. The filled tubes were implanted into 4 different regions of the dorsum of 20 adult male rats. Results: After 7, 14 and 21 days, a…

Buccal Delivery of Methimazole as an Alternative Means for Improvement of Drug Bioavailability: Permeation Studies and Matrix System Design

2012

The aim of this study was to investigate the potential for systemic administration of Methimazole (MMI) through the buccal mucosa as an alternative route for drug delivery. Considering that the most important restriction in buccal drug delivery could be the low permeability of the mucosa, the ability of MMI to cross the mucosal barrier was assessed. Permeation of MMI through porcine buccal mucosa was investigated ex vivo using Franz type diffusion cells, buffer solution simulating saliva or natural human saliva as donor phase. The collected data suggested that buccal mucosa does not hinder MMI diffusion and the drug crosses the membrane (J(s) = 0.068 mg cm(-2) h(-1) and K(p) = 0.065 cm h(-1…

Ruthenium red staining of polyanion containing structures in sections from epoxy-resin embedded tissues

1984

Summary Staining by ruthenium red (0.5 mg/ml in borate buffer at pH = 9.2) has been used for light and electron microscopic visualization of polyanion containing structures in sections from glutaraldehyde-fixed, epoxy-embedded tissues. This staining technique can be applied in a simple and rapid way, showing the reactive cell components with suitable resolution and contrast. Preliminary spectrophotometric studies show the correspondence in absorption characteristics of the dye which is bound to polyanions in situ or in vitro .

Short-term response of three resin-based materials as desensitizing agents under oral environmental exposure

2012

Objective. This paper focuses on clinical responses after 7 days of oral exposure to two resin-based materials as desensitizing agents compared to a fluoride varnish and on morphological and analytical study as a means to elucidate the mechanism of action. Materials and methods. The elemental composition of Vertise™ Flow (VF), Universal Dentine Sealant (UDS) and Flor-Opal® Varnish (FOV) were investigated by using an X-ray energy dispersive spectrometer (EDX) in conjunction with a scanning electron microscope (SEM). SEM morphology of the material-treated dentine surfaces and pain reduction ability according to the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) were evaluated in selected hypersensitive teeth. P…

Identification of the nuclear factor kappa-beta (NF-kB) in cortical of mice Wistar using Technovit 7200 VCR

2009

Objective: this study aimed to develop a nondecalcified bone sample processing technique enabling immunohistochemical labeling of proteins by kappa-beta nuclear factor (NF-kB) utilizing the Technovit 7200 VCR® in adult male Wistar rats. Study Method: A 1.8 mm diameter defect was performed 0.5mm from the femur proximal joint by means of a round bur. Experimental groups were divided according to fixing solution prior to histologic processing: Group 1- ethanol 70%; Group 2-10% buffered formalin; and Group 3- Glycerol diluted in 70% ethanol at a 70/30 ratio + 10% buffered formalin. The post-surgical periods ranged from 01 to 24 hours. Control groups included a nonsurgical procedure group (NSPG)…

PURINE AND PYRIMIDINE NUCLEOTIDES IN THE BRAIN OF NORMAL AND CONVULSANT RATS

1969

— Purine and pyrimidine nucleotides were measured in the brain of normal and electroshocked rats after chromatographic separation on ion-exchange resin of mono-, di- and tri-phosphorylated derivatives. CMP, IMP and NAD did not show any significant quantitative change. Adenine nucleotides showed an abrupt change followed by a rapid return to the control value. GTP was the only purine nucleotide exhibiting a relatively slow return to its starting concentration. The greatest percentage increase after electroshock was observed in UMP, which returned to its control value only after 5 min; UDPCoenzymes (i.e. UDPA plus UDPG) showed a relatively small drop during the development of the seizure and …

Visual and Refractive Outcomes in Hyperopic Pseudophakic Patients Implanted with the Acri.LISA 366D Multifocal Intraocular Lens

2009

Our purpose was to assess the visual quality after bilateral implantation of the Acri.LISA 366D intraocular lens (IOL; Carl Zeiss Meditec, Jena, Germany) in patients with hyperopia. We did a prospective and nonrandomized study. One hundred and seventy eyes of 85 patients had bilateral implantation of the Acri.LISA 366D IOL. The patients were divided into 2 groups: low to moderate hyperopia (IOL power, 21 to 24.5 diopters [D]) and high hyperopia (IOL power, 25 to 36 D). Monocular and binocular best spectacle-corrected visual acuity (BSCVA), best distance-corrected near visual acuity (BCNVA), binocular best distance-corrected intermediate visual acuity (VA), and distance contrast sensitivity …
