Failure Load and Collapse Mode of an RC Beam in a Large Collapsed Roof

2021

The present work focused on the determination of the collapse load and of the failure mode of a collapsed framed structure constructed in the South of Italy and failed in 2004 under its self-weight. Information available was the results on extensive experimental test campaign, for the determination of mechanical properties of concrete and steel bars of beams, floors and columns involved in the failure. Moreover, draws of original design with construction details and design rules valid in Italy at the time of construction were found. A simple monodimensional beam model for prediction of load-deflection curve, able to include degradation of constituent materials (concrete, steel and bond) was…

Modeling friction between shearing brittle surfaces with a discrete element method

2018

Hauraiden materiaalien murtuminen on eräs materiaalifysiikan peruskysymyksistä.

Modeling Political Corruption in Spain

2021

Political corruption is a universal phenomenon. Even though it is a cross-country reality, its level of intensity and the manner of its effect vary worldwide. In Spain, the demonstrated political corruption cases that have been echoed by the media in recent years for their economic, judicial and social significance are merely the tip of the iceberg as regards a problem hidden by many interested parties, plus the shortage of the means to fight against it. This study models and quantifies the population at risk of committing political corruption in Spain by identifying and quantifying the drivers that explain political corruption. Having quantified the problem, the model allows changes to be …

Emotional expression in music: contribution, linearity, and additivity of primary musical cues

2013

The aim of this study is to manipulate musical cues systematically to determine the aspects of music that contribute to emotional expression, and whether these cues operate in additive or interactive fashion, and whether the cue levels can be characterized as linear or non-linear. An optimized factorial design was used with six primary musical cues (mode, tempo, dynamics, articulation, timbre, and register) across four different music examples. Listeners rated 200 musical examples according to four perceived emotional characters (happy, sad, peaceful, and scary). The results exhibited robust effects for all cues and the ranked importance of these was established by multiple regression. The …

The multifaceted nature of language mediation and interpreting. A personal case of disempowerment

2015

This work aims at examining the similarities and differences between Community/Public Service Interpreter and Cultural- and Language Mediator. A personal case will be illustrated to show that delicate and complex interface of privatepublic- institutional-social discourse forms and discourse roles that are played out in the process of language mediation.

The interpreter’s footing in Spanish-Italian medical interviews

2014

Germinal matrix hemorrhage-intraventricular hemorrhage: pathogenesis and outcomes

2015

Germinal matrix hemorrhage-intraventricular hemorrhage (GMH-IVH) is one of the CNS injuries affecting preterm infants occurring in about 15%-20% of subjects weighing less than 1500 g. Currently, using ultrasonography, we recognize three grades of GMH-IVH. Grade I involving the subependymal parenchyma and/or extending in less than 10% of the ventricle, grade II with intraventricular bleeding not expanding in more than 50% of the ventricle, grade III characterized by consistent (> 50%)intraventricu- lar bleeding with ventricular dilatation. A concomitant intraparenchymal lesion (IPL), due to a venous infarction (ex grade IV), can be associated with any grade of IVH, worsening the prognosis. P…

Antibodies to cell surface ganglioside GD3 perturb inductive epithelial-mesenchymal interactions

1988

Abstract Most epithelial sheets emerge during embryogenesis by a branching and growth of the epithelium. The surrounding mesenchyme is crucial for this process. We report that branching morphogenesis and the formation of a new epithelium from the mesenchyme in the embryonic kidney can be blocked by a monoclonal antibody reacting with a surface glycolipid, disialoganglioside G D3 . In contrast, a more than 10-fold excess of antibodies to adhesive glycoproteins (N-CAM, L -CAM, fibronectin) fails to inhibit morphogenesis. Although the anti-G D3 antibody affected epithelial development, the disialoganglioside G D3 was expressed not in the epithelium, but in the mesenchyme surrounding the develo…

Towards data-driven medical imaging using natural language processing in patients with suspected urolithiasis.

2020

Abstract Objective The majority of radiological reports are still written as free text and lack structure. Further evaluation of free-text reports is difficult to achieve without a great deal of manual effort, and is not possible in everyday clinical practice. This study aims to automatically capture clinical information and positive hit rates from narrative radiological reports of suspected urolithiasis using natural language processing (NLP). Methods Narrative reports of low dose computed tomography (CT) of the retroperitoneum from April 2016 to July 2018 (n = 1714) were analyzed using NLP. These free-text reports were automatically structured based on RadLex concepts. Manual feedback was…
