An ASSOM neural network to represent actions performed by an autonomous agent

1997

An ASSOM neural network to describe the action performed by an autonomous reactive agent is proposed. The neural network receives in input the sequences of data acquired by the agent internal sensors and it classifies them by generating the corresponding symbolic assertions. Experimental results performed on a RWI B12 autonomous robot are reported.

An architecture for autonomous agents exploiting conceptual representations

1998

An architecture for autonomous agents is proposed that integrates the functional and the behavioral approaches to robotics. The integration is based on the introduction of a conceptual level, linking together a subconceptual, behavioral, level, and a linguistic level, encompassing symbolic representation and data processing. The proposed architecture is described with reference to an experimental setup, in which the robot task is that of building a significant description of its working environment. © 1998 Elsevier Science B.V. Adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system for kinematics solutions of redundant robots

2016

This written paper presents aspects concerning the implementation of the Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS) in the resolution of a redundant serial robot kinematics. The kinematics solutions are divided into two categories: direct kinematics solutions and inverse kinematics solutions. To be able to control a robot the most important solutions are the ones for the inverse kinematics since one knows the position and the final orientation of the end effector and needs to determine the relative displacement or movements into the robot couplings. To obtain the optimal solutions for the inverse kinematics of a redundant robot the mathematical equations were based onto the redundancy ci…

Flexible switching of feedback control mechanisms allows for learning of different task dynamics.

2013

To produce skilled movements, the brain flexibly adapts to different task requirements and movement contexts. Two core abilities underlie this flexibility. First, depending on the task, the motor system must rapidly switch the way it produces motor commands and how it corrects movements online, i.e. it switches between different (feedback) control policies. Second, it must also adapt to environmental changes for different tasks separately. Here we show these two abilities are related. In a bimanual movement task, we show that participants can switch on a movement-by-movement basis between two feedback control policies, depending only on a static visual cue. When this cue indicates that the …

Automation, workers' skills and job satisfaction.

2020

When industrial robots are adopted by firms in a local labor market, some workers are displaced and become unemployed. Other workers that are not directly affected by automation may however fear that these new technologies might replace their working tasks in the future. This fear of a possible future replacement is important because it negatively affects workers’ job satisfaction at present. This paper studies the extent to which automation affects workers’ job satisfaction, and whether this effect differs for high- versus low-skilled workers. The empirical analysis uses microdata for several thousand workers in Norway from the Working Life Barometer survey for the period 2016–2019, combin…

Robotic treatment of colorectal endometriosis: technique, feasibility and short-term results

2012

background: Deep infiltrating endometriosis (DIE) is a complex disease that impairs the quality of life and the fertility of women. Since a medical approach is often insufficient, a minimally invasive approach is considered the gold standard for complete disease excision. Roboticassisted surgery is a revolutionary approach, with several advantages compared with traditional laparoscopic surgery. methods: From March 2010 to May 2011, we performed 22 consecutive robotic-assisted complete laparoscopic excisions of DIE endometriosis with colorectal involvement. All clinical data were collected by our team and all patients were interviewed preoperatively and 3 and 6 months post-operatively and ye…

Design and validation of a neuroprosthesis for the treatment of upper limb tremor.

2013

Pathological tremor is the most prevalent movement disorder. In spite of the existence of various treatments for it, tremor poses a functional problem to a large proportion of patients. This paper presents the design and implementation of a novel neuroprosthesis for tremor management. The paper starts by reviewing a series of design criteria that were established after analyzing users needs and the expected functionality of the system. Then, it summarizes the design of the neuroprosthesis, which was built to meet the criteria defined previously. Experimental results with a representative group of 12 patients show that the neuroprosthesis provided significant (p <; 0.001) and systematic trem…
