The BaBar detector: Upgrades, operation and performance
2013
The BABAR detector operated successfully at the PEP-Il asymmetric e(+) e(-) collider at the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory from 1999 to 2008. This report covers upgrades, operation, and performance of the collider and the detector systems, as well as the trigger, online and offline computing, and aspects of event reconstruction since the beginning of data taking.
Impeller optimization in crossflow hydraulic turbines
2021
Crossflow turbines represent a valuable choice for energy recovery in aqueducts, due to their constructive simplicity and good efficiency under variable head jump conditions. Several experimental and numerical studies concerning the optimal design of crossflow hydraulic turbines have already been proposed, but all of them assume that structural safety is fully compatible with the sought after geometry. We show first, with reference to a specific study case, that the geometry of the most efficient impeller would lead shortly, using blades with a traditional circular profile made with standard material, to their mechanical failure. A methodology for fully coupled fluid dynamic and mechanical …
The taint of torture and the brazilian legal system
2019
In Brazil, the practice of torture intertwines deeply with its own history. The literature on the subject has had a greater intensification on its registers during the Dictatorial Regime (1964 to 1985). In spite of the Brazilian Constitution of 1988, Brazil only makes efforts to investigate the crimes of torture of this period to comply with the provisions of the United Nations in 2011. Within this scenario, the NationalTruth Commission (Law 12.528, of November 2011) was created with the purpose of clarifying the facts and circumstances of cases concerning human rights violations, as well as the Law on Access to Information (Law 12.527 of November 2011), which have regulated the constitutio…
Resource or waste? A perspective of plastics degradation in soil with a focus on end-of-life options.
2018
‘Capable-of-being-shaped’ synthetic compounds are prevailing today over horn, bone, leather, wood, stone, metal, glass, or ceramic in products that were previously left to natural materials. Plastic is, in fact, economical, simple, adaptable, and waterproof. Also, it is durable and resilient to natural degradation (although microbial species capable of degrading plastics do exist). In becoming a waste, plastic accumulation adversely affects ecosystems. The majority of plastic debris pollutes waters, accumulating in oceans. And, the behaviour and the quantity of plastic, which has become waste, are rather well documented in the water, in fact. This review collects existing information on pla…

Half-width plots, a simple tool to predict peak shape, reveal column kinetics and characterise chromatographic columns in liquid chromatography: Stat…
2013
Peak profiles in chromatography are characterised by their height, position, width and asymmetry; the two latter depend on the values of the left and right peak half-widths. Simple correlations have been found between the peak half-widths and the retention times. The representation of such correlations has been called half-width plots. For isocratic elution, the plots are parabolic, although often, the parabolas can be approximated to straight-lines. The plots can be obtained with the half-widths/retention time data for a set of solutes experiencing the same kinetics, eluted with a mobile phase at fixed or varying composition. When the analysed solutes experience different resistance to mas…
Molecular Motion, Defect Structures and Phase Transitions in Oligomer Crystals
1983
Defect structures in the high temperature modifications of oligomer crystals can generally be discribed as a superposition of chain rotations, longitudinal shifts of the molecules and the occurrence of conformational defects. Applying a suitable combination of experimental techniques it is possible to discriminate between the different components of disorder. This is demonstrated in a discussion of results obtained on n-alkanes, cycloalkanes and perfluoro-n-alkanes.
Preparation of macroscopically distinguishable superpositions of circular or linear oscillatory states of a bidimensionally trapped ion
2000
A simple scheme for the generation of two different classes of bidimensional vibrational Schrodinger cat-like states of an isotropically trapped ion is presented. We show that by appropriately adjusting an easily controllable parameter having a clear physical meaning, the states prepared by our procedure are quantum superpositions of either vibrational axial angular momentum eigenstates or Fock states along two orthogonal directions.
The relaxation dynamics of a viscous silica melt: II The intermediate scattering functions
2001
We use molecular dynamics computer simulations to study the relaxation dynamics of a viscous melt of silica. The coherent and incoherent intermediate scattering functions, F_d(q,t) and F_s(q,t), show a crossover from a nearly exponential decay at high temperatures to a two-step relaxation at low temperatures. Close to the critical temperature of mode-coupling theory (MCT) the correlators obey in the alpha-regime the time temperature superposition principle (TTSP) and show a weak stretching. We determine the wave-vector dependence of the stretching parameter and find that for F_d(q,t) it shows oscillations which are in phase with the static structure factor. The temperature dependence of the…
Geometrically enhanced closed-loop multi-turn sensor devices that enable reliable magnetic domain wall motion
2017
We experimentally realize a sophisticated structure geometry for reliable magnetic domain wall-based multi-turn-counting sensor devices, which we term closed-loop devices that can sense millions of turns. The concept relies on the reliable propagation of domain walls through a cross-shaped intersection of magnetic conduits, allowing for the intertwining of loops of the sensor device. As a key step to reach the necessary reliability of the operation, we develop a combination of tilted wires called the syphon structure at the entrances of the cross. We measure the control and reliability of the domain wall propagation individually for cross-shaped intersections, the syphon geometries, and fin…
