Finnish teachers as civic educators : From vision to action
2020
In this article, we examine Finnish class teachers as citizenship educators. Over the last ten years, the autonomous position of the Finnish teacher has become a symbol of the world-famous education system, and this study aims to illustrate how this freedom comes true in the framework of teacher as a citizenship educator. A prior study shows that teachers mostly share the same universal values, emphasizing altruism rather than individualism. Socially, teachers are more focused on maintaining the status quo and continuity of society than changing it radically. This article aims to answer the question how teachers define their role between society and individual learners and how they prioriti…

Elementary school teachers adapt their instructional support according to students' academic skills – A variable and person-oriented approach
2015
This study examined the longitudinal associations between children’s academic skills and the instructional support teachers gave individual students. A total of 253 Finnish children were tested on reading and math skills twice in the first grade and once in the second grade. The teachers of these children rated the instructional support that they gave each child in reading and mathematics. The results showed that the poorer the student’s reading and math skills were, the more support and attention the student received from his or her teacher later on. However, instructional support did not contribute positively to the subsequent development of the students’ academic skills. The person-orie…
Expressive writing and guidance interview as educational tecniques for building high school students’ professional life Project.
2018
Professional guidance is an inescapable duty of the teachers who are already engaged at school teaching curricular disciplines. The students, at the end of the high school, need a teacher-tutor who knows them well and how to use valid tools to assist them in the construction of their professional life project. Without being specialists in professional guidance, teachers can learn to use the “SeCo” methodology (“Expressive Writing and Guidance Interview”) to accompany their students in the delicate process that leads them to choose a specific training-professional option. In this article, after mentioning the theories of “personal growth through writing about oneself” built by Pennebaker and…

This paper analyses the training needs of Catholic school teachers that are emerged from a national survey and it also tries to point out what the initial education of aspiring teachers in Catholic schools should ha…

Narrative inquiry and historical skills. A study in teacher training
2017
This paper addresses narrative thinking and literacy levels in future primary school teachers in Spain. It uses the study of a historical synthesis of one of the main narratives in Spanish history: the Christian expansion through Muslim territories in the Iberian Peninsula in the Middle Ages. Accounts by 283 students of the degree in elementary school teaching at the universities of Valencia and Murcia were studied. The aim was to ascertain the students' discursive abilities with respect to their historical thinking skills. The results reveal poor narrative skills in future teachers and a very low level of historical literacy.
