The aim of our article is to study written narratives as a way of expressing emerging identities as second language (L2) users. We compare narratives written by Finnish students of Swedish during their first semester (24 essays) with data collected after the third year of study (9 essays), thereby trying to figure out how the university context has affected the development of the students as L2 users. L2 learning is regarded as a complex project entailing constant identity formation as a plurilingual subject. We see identity as a process, as something flexible, hybrid and multifaceted. The study analyzes Finnish upper secondary school engslish as a foreign language (EFL) textbooks. It aims to create an overview of the type and the frequency of output-based activities in two different textbook series. The analysis examines textbooks from two different courses. The purpose of the study is to find out if there are gaps in the textbooks' activity repertoire so that teachers can complement them if they consider it necessary. This article is based on the teaching experiment implemented in summer 2013 in a modern Finnish literature course organised by the Centre for International Mobility (CIMO) and the University of Jyväskylä Language Centre. This work deals with valency, a key syntactic notion whose chemistry-inspired label was established by Lucien Tesnière (1959), one of the most well-known contributors to the Prague Linguistic Circle. We will concentrate on two questions: (a) to what extent does valency play a role in Second Language Learning (SLL)?; and (b) what role should the use of valency play in language teaching practices? This paper will provide answers to these questions and propose reasons for motivating the use of valency in SLL.

Suullisen kielitaidon harjoittelua vieraissa kielissä sekä asenteita sitä kohtaan on tutkittu melko paljon niin Suomessa, kuin muualla maailmassakin (ks. esim. Mäkelä 2005 tai Yli-Renko ja Salo-Lee 1991). Sen sijaan oppilaiden ja opiskelijoiden halukkuudesta puhua vieraita kieliä, tässä tapauksessa erityisesti englantia, ei suomalaisessa kontekstissa ole tutkimustietoa.
