Molecular Cloning, Expression, Self-Assembly, Antigenicity, and Seroepidemiology of a Genogroup II Norovirus Isolated in France

ABSTRACT Virus-like particles of Dijon171/96 virus, a genogroup II norovirus, were expressed in a baculovirus system and were used for a seroepidemiological study of 1,078 age-stratified human sera collected in Dijon, France. The results showed a seroprevalence of 74.1%. Furthermore, we showed that murine antibodies generated against recombinant Dijon171/96 virus, and human antibodies recognized discontinuous epitopes on the particles.

A survey of seroprevalence of human papillomavirus types 16, 18 and 33 among children.

The importance and natural history of HPV infections in childhood is incompletely understood. We performed a survey for presence of serum antibodies to HPV capsids among 1031 children aged 0 to 13 years, resident in Stockholm, Sweden. The HPV seroprevalence among these children was 3.0% for HPV16, 0.6% for HPV18 and 2.7% for HPV33. By comparison, among simultaneously analyzed positive control panels comprising women with CIN or healthy women with type-specific cervical HPV DNA, seroprevalence of HPV 16, 18 and 33 was 69%, 58% and 63% respectively. The results suggest that HPV infection in childhood is not common.

Venezuela's humanitarian crisis, resurgence of vector-borne diseases, and implications for spillover in the region

In the past 5–10 years, Venezuela has faced a severe economic crisis, precipitated by political instability and declining oil revenue. Public health provision has been affected particularly. In this Review, we assess the impact of Venezuela's health-care crisis on vector-borne diseases, and the spillover into neighbouring countries. Between 2000 and 2015, Venezuela witnessed a 359% increase in malaria cases, followed by a 71% increase in 2017 (411 586 cases) compared with 2016 (240 613). Neighbouring countries, such as Brazil, have reported an escalating trend of imported malaria cases from Venezuela, from 1538 in 2014 to 3129 in 2017. Seroprevalence of Toxoplasma gondii antibodies in wild dolphins from the Spanish Mediterranean coast.

Although Toxoplasma gondii infection has been found occasionally in cetaceans, little is known of the prevalence of antibodies to T. gondii in wild dolphins. Antibodies to T. gondii were determined in serum samples from 58 dolphins stranded in the Spanish Mediterranean coast. Modified agglutination test was used to determine T. gondii antibodies, and a titer of 1:25 was considered indicative of T. gondii infection. Antibodies to T. gondii were found in 4 of 36 striped dolphins (Stenella coeruleoalba), in 2 of 4 common dolphins (Delphinus delphis), in 4 of 7 bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus), and in 1 harbour porpoise (Phocoena phocoena). The Changing Pattern of Human Immunodeficiency Virus Type 1 Infection in Intravenous Drug Users

A cross-sectional seroepidemiologic study was carried out between 1985 and 1990 in 1,567 heterosexual intravenous drug users who had been seen at the AIDS Regional Reference Center in Palermo, Italy, to evaluate the rate of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) seroprevalence in this group and its long-term trend. Sixty serum samples collected from drug users in 1980 and 1983, before the founding of the Center (1985), were tested as well. Some demographic and behavioral risk factors were studied in a subgroup of intravenous drug users enrolled in 1985, 1987, and 1990 for their possible association with HIV-1. Has VZV epidemiology changed in Italy? Results of a seroprevalence study

The aim of the study was to evaluate if and how varicella prevalence has changed in Italy. In particular a seroprevalence study was performed, comparing it to similar surveys conducted in pre-immunization era. During 2013–2014, sera obtained from blood samples taken for diagnostic purposes or routine investigations were collected in collaboration with at least one laboratory/center for each region, following the approval of the Ethics Committee. SARS-CoV-2 vaccination modelling for safe surgery to save lives: data from an international prospective cohort study

Abstract Background Preoperative SARS-CoV-2 vaccination could support safer elective surgery. Vaccine numbers are limited so this study aimed to inform their prioritization by modelling. Methods The primary outcome was the number needed to vaccinate (NNV) to prevent one COVID-19-related death in 1 year. NNVs were based on postoperative SARS-CoV-2 rates and mortality in an international cohort study (surgical patients), and community SARS-CoV-2 incidence and case fatality data (general population).
