PLANTING DENSITY AND PRUNING METHOD AFFECT EGGPLANT SOILLESS CULTURE
2007
The aim of this research was to evaluate the effects of two planting densities (1.6 plants-m-2 or 2.5 plants-m-2) and two pruning methods (two or four stemmed plants) on eggplant cultivars Black Bell and Longo in soilless culture. The research was carried out in 2003-2004 in the Northern coast Sicily. Eggplant plug plants were transplanted in a heated glasshouse in polystyrene containers (80 cm in length, 25 cm in width, 20 cm in height) filled with coconut coir dust. The experimental design was a split-split plot. Fruit production from January to April increased significantly as planting density increased. Irrespectively of the cultivars, four stemmed plants gave higher yields than two ste…
EFFECTS OF PRE-PLANT SOIL TREATMENTS ON STRAWBERRY IN SICILY
2014
The 2005 ban by Italy of methyl bromide (MB) has resulted in significant crop management difficulties in pre-plant soil dis-infestation. We report two pre-plant soil treatment techniques and their effects on the performance of new cultivars and selections tolerant to the main root pathogens. The plants grown in soil treated with chloropicrin + 1,3 dichloropropene were the most productive. While neither treatment affected average berry weight, soluble solids content or titratable acidity, the treatment × cultivar interaction was significant and fruits from plants grown in treated soil were firmer than control s. Selection PA 260 and cultivar Florida Fortuna were the earliest, three selection…

Relationship between cobalt, copper and zinc content of soils and vegetables
1992
The relationship between cobalt, copper and zinc content of soils and the vegetables grown in them is discussed. Samples of soil and edible vegetables were taken from 15 different sites, corresponding to four agricultural areas exposed to different degrees of environmental pollution: high industrial and traffic, high industrial and urban, and low industrial and urban pollution. Elements were determined by atomic absorption spectroscopy. Variance analysis (ANOVA) was applied to cobalt, copper and zinc content of vegetables and soils in order to detect significant differences among soils of different areas and the vegetables grown there. The possible relationship between the heavy metal conte…
Effects of heat treatment on hydrogen production potential and microbial community of thermophilic compost enrichment cultures
2011
Cellulosic plant and waste materials are potential resources for fermentative hydrogen production. In this study, hydrogen producing, cellulolytic cultures were enriched from compost material at 52, 60 and 70°C. Highest cellulose degradation and highest H(2) yield were 57% and 1.4 mol-H(2) mol-hexose(-1) (2.4 mol-H(2) mol-hexose-degraded(-1)), respectively, obtained at 52°C with the heat-treated (80°C for 20 min) enrichment culture. Heat-treatments as well as the sequential enrichments decreased the diversity of microbial communities. The enrichments contained mainly bacteria from families Thermoanaerobacteriaceae and Clostridiaceae, from which a bacterium closely related to Thermoanaerobiu…
Response of soil bacterial community structure to successive perturbations of different types and intensities
2008
SummaryIn soil, genetic structure modifications of indigenousbacterial community consecutively to a severe stress(mercury contamination) were delayed when thecommunity was pre-exposed to various minor per-turbations (heat, copper and atrazine). Such minorperturbations induced transitory community struc-ture modifications leading to an increase of commu-nity stability towards a severe mercury stress. Theseresults illustrated well the short-term pre-adaptationprocess for bacterial community hypothesizing thatcommunity submitted to perturbations become moreresistant to withstand another stress. Compared with other environmental matrices of the bio-sphere, soils are considered as the main reservo…
Effect of primary mild stresses on resilience and resistance of the nitrate reducer community to a subsequent severe stress
2008
International audience; The factors regulating soil microbial stability (e.g. resistance and resilience) are poorly understood, even though microorganisms are essential for ecosystem functioning. In this study, we tested whether a functional microbial community subjected to different primary mild stresses was equally resistant or resilient to a subsequent severe stress. The nitrate reducers were selected as model community and analysed in terms of nitrate reduction rates and genetic structure by narG PCR-restriction fragment length polymorphism fingerprinting. Heat, copper and atrazine were used as primary stresses and mercury at a high concentration as a severe stress. None of the primary …

A simplified falling-head tecnique for rapid determination of field-saturated hydraulic conductivity
2004
Simplified measurements of the field-saturated hydraulic conductivity, K fs , require short duration experiments, small water volumes, and easily transportable equipment. A simplified falling-head (SFH) technique for the rapid determination of K fs has been developed and tested. The technique consists in applying a small volume of water on a soil surface, confined by a ring inserted a short distance into the soil, and then measuring the time from the application of water to the instant at which the surface area is no longer covered by water. A measurement of the initial and field-saturated soil water contents, and an estimate of the α* parameter of the Gardner's exponential model are then u…
Measured and Modeled Residue Dynamics of Famoxadone and Oxathiapiprolin in Tomato Fields
2018
A reliable analytical method for the simultaneous determination of famoxadone and oxathiapiprolin dissipation kinetics as well as the metabolites of oxathiapiprolin (IN-E8S72 and IN-WR791) in tomato and soil was developed. We studied the dissipation of famoxadone and oxathiapiprolin in tomatoes grown using different kinetic curves in the area of Beijing in 2015 and 2016. Our results show that the most suitable model for two fungicides in 2015 and 2016 was first-order kinetic and second-order kinetic with the half-lives of 3.4 to 5.2 and 2.4 to 3.0 days, respectively. In addition, we applied the dynamic plant uptake model dynamiCROP and combined it with results from the field experiments to …
