Chemical Composition, In Vitro Bioaccessibility and Antioxidant Activity of Polyphenolic Compounds from Nutraceutical Fennel Waste Extract

2021

Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare Mill.) waste contains a broad range of bioactive molecules, including polyphenols, which have poor bioaccessibility during gastrointestinal digestion. This work aimed to investigate the bioaccessibility of total phenolic compounds and the antioxidant capacity during simulated gastrointestinal digestion using two nutraceutical formulations based on non-acid-resistant (NAR) and acid-resistant (AR) capsules containing aqueous-based extracts from fennel waste. Moreover, to obtain a comprehensive investigation of the polyphenolic constituents of the fennel waste extract, a high-resolution mass spectrometry (Q-Orbitrap) analysis was performed. Notably, chlorogenic acids…

Fast analysis of polyphenols and alkaloids in cocoa-based products by ultra-high performance liquid chromatography and Orbitrap high resolution mass …

2018

The cocoa varieties Criollo, Forastero and Trinitario, which have different organoleptic properties, quite often are mixed together in cocoa-based products. The objective of this work was to develop a rapid method for the simultaneous determination of polyphenols (n = 35) and alkaloids (n = 2) in cocoa-based products by using the high throughput advantages provided by the Q Exactive Hybrid Quadrupole-Orbitrap Mass Spectrometer (FIRMS). The proposed procedure was optimized and validated in terms of selectivity and specificity (mass accuracy 0.990), accuracy (recovery range from 89.1 to 112.4%) and precision (relative standard deviation < 10%). The method was applied to 80 cocoa-based samples…

Physicochemical stability of cabazitaxel containing premix solution and diluted infusion solutions

2015

Objectives This study was conducted to investigate the extended physicochemical stability of cabazitaxel containing premix solution and diluted infusion solutions in either 0.9% sodium chloride (NaCl) or 5% glucose (G5) vehicle solution. Methods A stability indicating, reverse phase, high performance liquid chromatography assay with ultraviolet detection was developed and validated. Premix solutions of cabazitaxel were prepared in the original vials. Infusion solutions were prepared in prefilled polypropylene/polyethylene (PP/PE) infusion bags (0.9% NaCl, G5) to achieve the recommended minimum and maximum cabazitaxel concentrations (0.1 mg/mL, 0.26 mg/mL). Test solutions were stored refrige…

Compared effects of synthetic and natural bile acid surfactants on xenobiotic absorption I. Studies with polysorbate and taurocholate in rat colon

1991

Some expected differences between synthetic and natural bile acid surfactants relative to their influences on xenobiotic absorption are briefly outlined on the basis of literature data. Then, experimental work is presented which shows that these differences exist and that they can be even more relevant than suspected. Absorption tests were developed in rat colon in situ with polysorbate (synthetic) and sodium taurocholate (natural) surfactants, using a homologous series of phenylalkylcarboxylic acids as test compounds. At the critical micelle concentration (CMC), the two previously reported actions of synthetic surfactants on xenobiotic absorption (i.e. the increase in absorbing membrane po…

Absorption-partition relationships for true homologous series of xenobiotics as a possible approach to study mechanisms of surfactants in absorption.…

1992

Abstract This paper — the latest in this series of reports — deals with the effects of the anionic surfactant sodium lauryl sulfate on the colonic absorption of acidic xenobiotics (phenylalkylcarboxylic acids), as compared with those exerted by the nonionic polysorbate 80. The effects of these surfactants are qualitatively identical but quantitatively different. Thus, the increase in polarity of the colonic absorbant membrane is greater with lauryl sulfate, whereas micellar solubilization is much higher with polysorbate. As for the rest (i.e. the elimination of the stagnant aqueous diffusion layer as a limiting step for absorption), the two surfactants behave in a similar way. The biopharma…

Zn-Enhanced Asp-Rich Antimicrobial Peptides N-Terminal Coordination by Zn(II) and Cu(II), Which Distinguishes Cu(II) Binding to Different Peptides

2021

The antimicrobial activity of surfactant-associated anionic peptides (SAAPs), which are isolated from the ovine pulmonary surfactant and are selective against the ovine pathogen Mannheimia haemolytica, is strongly enhanced in the presence of Zn(II) ions. Both calorimetry and ITC measurements show that the unique Asp-only peptide SAAP3 (DDDDDDD) and its analogs SAAP2 (GDDDDDD) and SAAP6 (GADDDDD) have a similar micromolar affinity for Zn(II), which binds to the N-terminal amine and Asp carboxylates in a net entropically-driven process. All three peptides also bind Cu(II) with a net entropically-driven process but with higher affinity than they bind Zn(II) and coordination that involves the N…

Chapter 8 Native and Bonded Silicas in Aqueous Sec

1988

Publisher Summary This chapter deals with the properties of packings and columns in correlation to chromatographic separations in size exclusion chromatography (SEC) and provides guidelines for optimum support design. The chapter provides a survey of the current state-of-the-art with respect to the surface modification of silica for SEC packings in aqueous eluents. The properties of commercial packings and columns are listed and compared. An advice is also discussed on the operation and maintenance of columns with a view to achieving high resolution and long life-time. In SEC, solute elution is based on equilibrium, entropy-controlled size exclusion process. According to their size, the so…

Imaging pore space in tight gas sandstone reservoir: insights from broad ion beam cross-sectioning

2010

Monetization of tight gas reservoirs, which contain significant gas reserves world-wide, represents a challenge for the entire oil and gas industry. The development of new technologies to enhance tight gas reservoir productivity is strongly dependent on an improved understanding of the rock properties and especially the pore framework. Numerous methods are now available to characterize sandstone cores. However, the pore space characterization at pore scale remains difficult due to the fine pore size and delicate sample preparation, and has thus been mostly indirectly inferred until now. Here we propose a new method of ultra high-resolution petrography combining high resolution SEM and argon…

Determination of tocopherols in vegetable oils by CEC using methacrylate ester-based monolithic columns

2007

The separation and determination of tocopherols (Ts) in vegetable oils by CEC using methacrylate ester-based monolithic columns has been developed. The effects of pore size of the monolithic columns were studied, and the composition of mobile phase was optimized. The optimal pore size of the monolith was obtained with 12 wt% 1,4-butanediol in the polymerization mixture. Excellent resolution between tocopherols was achieved within 10 min analysis time with a 99:1 v/v MeOH-aqueous buffer containing 5 mM tris(hydroxymethyl)aminomethane at pH 8.0. The LODs were lower than 2.3 microg/mL, and interday and column-to-column reproducibilities at 25 microg/mL were better than 5.6%. Using a 93:7 v/v M…

The use of very high resolution images for the estimation of Posidonia oceanica beach-cast morphology

2019

Posidonia oceanica is an endemic Mediterranean seagrass that forms wide and dense meadows from the surface to depths of about 40 m. During fall and winter, due to aging and storms, leaves and rhizomes break away from the seagrass meadows and accumulate on the shores (from a few centimeters in the water to several meters inshore) forming conspicuous beach-casts of P. oceanica detritus. These structures have received increasing attention in the last decade for the potential ecosystem services they provide in protecting the coast from erosion, linking marine and terrestrial food chains and contributing to carbon and nutrients fluxes. However, seagrass beach-cast morphology is not easy to estim…
