The Stabilizing Role of Government Size

2007

This paper presents an analysis of how alternative models of the business cycle can replicate the stylized fact that large governments are associated with less volatile economies. Our analysis shows that adding nominal rigidities and costs of capital adjustment to an otherwise standard RBC model can generate a negative correlation between government size and the volatility of output. However, in the model, we find that the stabilizing effect is only due to a composition effect and it is not present when we look at the volatility of private output. Given that empirically we also observe a negative correlation between government size and the volatility of consumption, we modify the model by i…

Fiscal Rules and Macroeconomic Stability

2005

In this paper we analyze the impact of fiscal rules on the effectiveness of fiscal policy as a macroeconomic stabilizing instrument. First, we review the available evidence on the effects of fiscal policy to affect output in the short run and real interest rates and investment and growth in the long run, and we show how the use of fiscal rules has proved useful in restraining debt and deficits. Secondly, we discuss if debt consolidation rules trade off higher output instability in exchange for lower deficits, using three alternative representations of the intertemporal substitution mechanism in a SDGE framework. Our main conclusion is that both the impact of discretionary fiscal policy and …

SELECTIVE G-QUADRUPLEX STABILIZERS: SALPHEN-LIKE COMPLEXES WITH ANTIPROLIFERATIVE ACTIVITY

2013

Schiff base complexes derived from N,N!-bridged tetradentate ligands involving N2O2 donor atoms present very favourable features to act as G4 binders. Thus, a series of square-planar and square pyramidal metal complexes, ML2+ (M = Ni, Cu, and Zn), have been synthesized and characterized.

Biopolyester-based systems containing naturally occurring compounds with enhanced thermooxidative stability

2016

Background This work presents a sustainable approach for the stabilization of polylactic acid (PLA) against thermo-oxidative aging. Methods Naturally occurring phenolic and polyphenolic compounds, such as ferulic acid (FerAc), vanillic acid (VanAc), quercetin (Querc) and vitamin E (VitE), were introduced into PLA. Results The preliminary characterization of the systems formulated containing different amounts of natural stabilizers showed that all compounds used acted as plasticizers, leading to a decrease in rheological functions with respect to neat PLA, without significantly modifying the crystallinity of the raw material. The study of the thermo-oxidative behavior of neat PLA and PLA/nat…

Concentration-dependent anti-/pro-oxidant activity of natural phenolic compounds in bio-polyesters

2017

Abstract In this work, the potential of several naturally occurring phenolic compounds, such as Ferulic Acid (FA), Vanillic Acid (VA), Vitamin E (VE) and Quercetin (Q), as stabilizers against the photo-oxidative degradation of Polylactic acid (PLA) has been assessed. Specifically, PLA-based films containing different amounts of considered stabilizers have been formulated and their photo-stability under UVB exposure has been evaluated. The preliminary characterization of the formulated films shows that all used stabilizers exert plasticizing action, as probed by rheological analysis, due to their low molecular weight. Moreover, no significant modification of the PLA crystallinity has been no…

UV-stabilisation of polystyrene-based nanocomposites provided by polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes (POSS)

2012

Abstract The photo-ageing behaviour of Polyhedral Oligomeric SilSequioxane (POSS)-polystyrene (PS) nanocomposites has been investigated for the first time. POSS having different inorganic framework and pendant organic groups have been used in the PS nanocomposite preparation and the formulated films were subjected to accelerated weathering. Compared to pristine PS, the POSS-containing PS developed a lower level of carbonyl and hydroxyl groups as a function of the exposure time, indicating a significantly improved resistance of the nanocomposites to photo-degradation. The results suggest that all of the investigated POSS molecules play a protective role and may extend the in-use lifetime of …

Multi-functional hindered amine light stabilizers-functionalized carbon nanotubes for advanced ultra-high molecular weight Polyethylene-based nanocom…

2015

Hindered Amine Light Stabilizer (HAS) molecules have been covalently linked on the outer surface of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (CNTs), and the so-obtained multi-functional fillers (HAS-f-CNTs) have been compounded with Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene (UHMWPE) to get composite films. The success of the grafting reaction of the HAS molecules has been confirmed through spectroscopic and thermo-gravimetric analyses. Morphological analyses reveal a segregated microstructure, in which CNT-rich channels surround the polymer domains. This morphology results in improved mechanical properties and appreciable electrical conductive features. More importantly, the addition of only 1 wt.% of …

NiII, and ZnII Schiff Base Complexes: Telomeric G-quadruplex Stabilizers

2014

Recently, NiII and ZnII metal complexes of the ligand Salpyrim have been synthesized and characterized. Their affinity for wild-type h-Telo G-quadruplex DNA and for calf thymus DNA was investigated by UV absorption spectroscopy, circular dichroism and viscometry. The data collectively suggest that both complexes bind effectively to G-quadruplexes by direct end-stacking, stabilizing the oligonucleotide secondary structure. The two complexes are also typical B-DNA intercalators. Remarkably, their binding constants, Kb, with the G4s structures are about 10 fold higher than those with B-DNA, highlighting the selectivity. Experiments to evaluate the biological activity of the two complexes again…

Multi-functional Stabilizers-functionalized Carbon Nanotubes for advanced Ultra-High Molecular Weight Polyethylene-based Nanocomposites

2015

Stabilizing molecules, such as hindered phenols (both synthetic and naturally occurring), polyphenols and hindered amine light stabilizers, were covalently linked or physically absorbed onto outer surface of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and the obtained multi-functional fillers (Stab-f-CNTs) were dispersed in Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene (UHMWPE) aiming at obtaining advanced nanocomposites with enhanced thermo- and/or photo-oxidative stability, electrical and mechanical properties. The chemical grafting or physical absorption of stabilizing molecules is confirmed by spectroscopic, spectrometric and thermo-gravimetric analyses, and the influence of the multi-functional na…
