Collaborative argumentation through role-play by students on a degree programme in social services
2019
The aim of this study was to investigate the nature of collaborative argumentation by students enrolled in a degree program in social services. Students (n = 29) in a University of Applied Sciences participated in role-play discussions and problem solving on adolescents’ substance abuse. The discussions were conducted either online (15 students) or face-to-face (14 students). The data comprise the students’ asynchronous online and face-to-face discussions, which were analysed by identifying discussion fragments relevant in collaborative argumentation, and by comparing the results of the two groups. The results showed that the face-to-face discussions were more collaborative than the online …
RANKING DECISION MAKING UNITS BY MEANS OF SOFT COMPUTING DEA MODELS
2011
This paper presents a method for ranking a set of decision making units according to their level of efficiency and which takes into account uncertainty in the data. Efficiency is analysed using fuzzy DEA techniques and the ranking is based on the statistical analysis of cases that include representative situations. The method enables the removal of the sometimes unrealistic hypothesis of a perfect trade-off between increased inputs and outputs. This model is compared with other DEA models that work with imprecise or fuzzy data. As an illustration, we apply our ranking method to the evaluation of a group of Spanish seaports, as well as teams playing in the Spanish football league. We compar…
Insights from Operator Interviews
2009
The previous section analysed use of software to improve productivity from a general perspective and provided a quick statistical analysis of software usage to the performance of a CSP. Before conducting elaborated statistical analysis on CSP software usage, we need to gain some insight into operator business and understanding on how operators see the role of software in their business as well as how they acquire software.
Multispectral colour analysis for quantitative evaluation of pseudoisochromatic color deficiency tests
2010
Multispectral color analysis was used for spectral scanning of Ishihara and Rabkin color deficiency test book images. It was done using tunable liquid-crystal LC filters built in the Nuance II analyzer. Multispectral analysis keeps both, information on spatial content of tests and on spectral content. Images were taken in the range of 420-720nm with a 10nm step. We calculated retina neural activity charts taking into account cone sensitivity functions, and processed charts in order to find the visibility of latent symbols in color deficiency plates using cross-correlation technique. In such way the quantitative measure is found for each of diagnostics plate for three different color deficie…
Dynamic aphasia and the generation of language
2004
Severely reduced propositional speech in the context of intact nominal language skills (i.e., repetition, naming, comprehension, and reading) is the hallmark of dynamic aphasia (Luria, 1970). Recent evidence suggests there may be different types of dynamic aphasia as some patients do not produce any response on verbal generation tasks, whilst others are able to perform normally on verbal genera- tion tasks. For example, Robinson and colleagues (Robinson, Blair, & Cipolotti, 1998; Robinson, Shallice, & Cipolotti, 2004) reported two dynamic aphasics who failed to produce a verbal response when many verbal response options were activated by a stimulus, but not when a dominant response was avai…

STATISTICS OF DATA RELATED TO AMAZING SUBSTANCES ANALYZED AT THE “LABORATORY OF CHEMICAL INVESTIGATIONS” OF THE PALERMO SCIENTIFIC POLICE
2019
The substances analyzed mainly at the “Chemical Investigation Laboratory” of the Regional Cabinet of Palermo, in the period from 2013 to 2018, are heroin and cocaine. For analytical techniques, mass spectrometry techniques associated with gas chromatography were used. Statistical analysis revealed a general increase in both the distribution and the average percentage of active ingredient in heroin, a substance currently available on the illicit market at a lower price than in the past, often cut with substances of synthetic derivation.Comparison of heroin seizure data in western Sicily and throughout the national territory shows a growth trend; in particular, in 2017 there is an average per…
Sequential Monte Carlo methods in Bayesian joint models for longitudinal and time-to-event data
2020
The statistical analysis of the information generated by medical follow-up is a very important challenge in the field of personalized medicine. As the evolutionary course of a patient's disease progresses, his/her medical follow-up generates more and more information that should be processed immediately in order to review and update his/her prognosis and treatment. Hence, we focus on this update process through sequential inference methods for joint models of longitudinal and time-to-event data from a Bayesian perspective. More specifically, we propose the use of sequential Monte Carlo (SMC) methods for static parameter joint models with the intention of reducing computational time in each…
The History of ViSta: The Visual Statistics System
2012
ViSta is a project that focuses on dynamic and interactive graphics for statistics and was initiated by the late Forrest W. Young at the beginning of the 1990s. For over approximately 20 years, Forrest and other collaborators, including the authors of this article, have used ViSta for experimenting with these kinds of graphics in different settings, applying them to different scenarios of data and statistical analysis, searching to develop the right combination of features most appropriate in each case. In this time, ViSta evolved quite considerably, going through what we reckon were three different stages, namely: the initial one setting forth the foundations of ViSta; the second period wh…
