Near-field properties of plasmonic nanostructures with high aspect ratio

International audience; Using the Green's dyad technique based on cuboidal meshing, we compute the electromagnetic field scattered by metal nanorods with high aspect ratio. We investigate the effect of the meshing shape on the numerical simulations. We observe that discretizing the object with cells with aspect ratios similar to the object's aspect ratio improves the computations, without degrading the convergency. We also compare our numerical simulations to finite element method and discuss further possible improvements.

Compensation of missing wedge effects with sequential statistical reconstruction in electron tomography.

Electron tomography (ET) of biological samples is used to study the organization and the structure of the whole cell and subcellular complexes in great detail. However, projections cannot be acquired over full tilt angle range with biological samples in electron microscopy. ET image reconstruction can be considered an ill-posed problem because of this missing information. This results in artifacts, seen as the loss of three-dimensional (3D) resolution in the reconstructed images. Rhogocytes are pore cells scattered among the connective tissue of different body parts of gastropods and other molluscs, with great variation in their number, shape and size. They are enveloped by a lamina of extracellular matrix. Their most characteristic feature is the "slit apparatus", local invaginations of the plasma membrane bridged by cytoplasmic bars, forming slits of ca. 20 nm width. A slit diaphragm creates a molecular sieve with permeation holes of 20×20 nm. Study of the annealing conditions and photoelectrochemical characterization of a new iron oxide bi-layered nanostructure for water splitting

Iron oxide nanostructures have emerged as promising materials for being used as photocatalysts for hydrogen production due to their advantageous properties. However, their low carrier mobility and short hole diffusion length limit their efficiency in water splitting. To overcome these drawbacks, in the present study, we synthetized a new hematite (alpha-Fe2O3) bi-layered nanostructure consisting of a top nanosphere layer and a nanotubular underneath one by electrochemical anodization. EPR on Radiation-Induced Defects in SiO2

Continuous-wave electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy has been the technique of choice for the studies of radiation-induced defects in silica (SiO2) for 60 years, and has recently been expanded to include more sophisticated techniques such as high-frequency EPR, pulse electron nuclear double resonance (ENDOR), and pulse electron spin echo envelope modulation (ESEEM) spectroscopy. Structural models of radiation-induced defects obtained from single-crystal EPR analyses of crystalline SiO2 (alfa-quartz) are often applicable to their respective analogues in amorphous silica (a-SiO2), although significant differences are common.

Experimental study on the influence of controller firmware on multirotor actuator dynamics

In this paper the dynamic response of a propeller actuator commonly used in hobby unmanned aerial vehicles is studied experimentally. It is shown that the choice of electronic speed controller firmware has a significant effect on the overall actuator dynamics. Six different scenarios are tested: 1+2) Rising/falling step response with the standard firmware of the Hobbyking F30a, 3+4) Rising/falling step response with firmware from Simon Kirby/GitHub and 5+6) Rising/falling step response with firmware from Simon Kirby/GitHub including complementary Pulse-Width-Modulation (PWM) switching. Dielectrophoretic trapping of DNA origami.

In this thesis three-dimensional tube-shaped DNA-origamis were dielectrophoretically trapped within lithographically fabricated nanoelectrodes. The origamis had been premade while the electrodes were fabricated specifically for these experiments with two different gapsizes, 150 nm and 400 nm. The aim of the work was to capture individual nanotubes in the gap between the electrodes by utilizing the dielectrophoretic forces present in the structure when a solution containing the origamis was put onto the electrodes and a voltage was applied. Dielectrophoretic trapping of multilayer DNA origami nanostructures and DNA origami-induced local destruction of silicon dioxide

DNA origami is a widely used method for fabrication of custom-shaped nanostructures. However, to utilize such structures, one needs to controllably position them on nanoscale. Here we demonstrate how different types of 3D scaffolded multilayer origamis can be accurately anchored to lithographically fabricated nanoelectrodes on a silicon dioxide substrate by DEP.
