Assessment of the ecotoxicity of phytotreatment substrate soil as landfill cover material for in-situ leachate management

Phytotreatment capping in closed landfills is a promising, cost-effective, in situ option for sustainable leachate treatment and might be synergistically coupled with energy crops to produce renewable energy (e.g.: biodiesel or bioethanol). This study proposes to use 0.30 m of soil as growing substrate for plants cultivated on the temporary cover of closed landfills. Once the leachate phytotreatment process is no longer required, 0.70 m of the same soil would be added to attain the final top cover configuration. Plasmon polaritons of metallic nanowires for controlling submicron propagation of light

The metallic nanowires are elongated parallelepipeds deposited on a trans-parent substrate. A tightly focused plane wave illuminates one end of the nanowires. The localized surface-plasmon resonances of the nanowires propagate the local excitations over distances larger than the incidentwavelength. Study of the MOCVD growth of ZnO on GaAs substrates: Influence of the molar ratio of the precursors on structural and morphological properties

Abstract ZnO thin films were grown by metal-organic chemical vapour deposition (MOCVD) on GaAs(100) and GaAs(111)A substrates. The growth experiments were performed at temperatures ranging from 290 to 500 ∘C and atmospheric pressure. Diethylzinc (DEZn) and tertiary butanol (tBuOH) were used as Zn and O precursors, respectively. The crystallinity of the grown films was studied by X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) and the thickness and morphology were investigated by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). The influence of substrate orientation and molar ratio of the precursors on the crystalline orientation and morphology of the ZnO grown films was analysed.
Structure and Microscopic Magnetism of Epitaxial Ni-Mn-Ga Films

We report on the structural and magnetic properties of epitaxial thin films of the ferromagnetic shape memory material Ni–Mn–Ga prepared by DC magnetron sputter deposition. Different substrate materials, i.e., MgO(100) and Al2O3(11−20) allow for a tailored epitaxial growth. Using a sacrificial chromium buffer layer freestanding epitaxial films are obtained. In combination with photolithography partially freestanding structures such as microbridges are fabricated. The complex martensite crystal structure in substrate-constrained and freestanding films is studied by means of X-ray diffraction. Growth and defect studies of CdTe particles

The paper reports the epitaxial growth of cadmium telluride (CdTe) particles by thermal deposition on cleaved planes of (001)NaCl and (001)KBr. Using high resolution transmission electron microscopy and electron diffraction it was shown that CdTe particles could have different orientation and phase (cubic or hexagonal) depending on the substrate temperature. Their most common defects are twins and stacking faults.
Size-dependent alignment of Fe nanoparticles upon deposition onto W(110)

Using in situ electron diffraction we study the orientation of mass-selected iron nanoparticles upon deposition onto single crystalline W(110) at room temperature. It is found that particles with a diameter below about 4 nm and a kinetic energy $\ensuremath{\le}0.1$ electron volt per atom spontaneously align with respect to the substrate. Larger particles preferentially rest with their (001) and (110) facets parallel to the surface, but do not show further alignment. The data may hint at thermally activated dislocation motions upon the impact on the substrate which are responsible for the observed orientation below 4 nm. Ostracods have long been studied by scientists because their fossil remnants provide a valuable tool for the reconstruction of past environmental changes, including climate change and anthropogenic eutrophication. Relatively little is known about the physiology, behaviour and reproductive ecology of recent forms. Reliable and effective virtual high-throughput screening (vHTS) methods are desperately needed to minimize the expenses involved in drug discovery projects. Here, we present an improvement to the negative image-based (NIB) screening: the shape, the electrostatics, and the solvation state of the target protein’s ligand-binding site are included into the vHTS. Additionally, the initial vHTS results are postprocessed with molecular mechanics/generalized Born surface area (MMGBSA) calculations to estimate the favorability of ligand-protein interactions. The present report is concerned with a stereoselective, reliable route to trans-1,2-disubstituted cyclopropanes and in particular to (S,S)-1-tosyloxymethyl-2-fluoromethyl-cyclopropane (1) and (R,R)-1-tosyloxymethyl-2-fluoromethyl-cyclopropane (ent-1) as conformationally restricted, terminally fluorinated C4-building blocks for medicinal chemistry. Abstract A series of fourteen cytochrome P-450 isoenzymes was treated with three different protein kinases and found to devide into isoenzymes phosphorylated (i) by both the cyclic AMP-dependent kinase and the calcium-phospholipid-dependent kinase (P-450 PB 3a and PB 2e), (ii) by none of these kinases (P-450 PB 1b, MC 1b, UT 1, and thromboxane synthase), and (iii) by either the cyclic AMP-dependent kinase (P-450 LM 2, PB 2d, and PB 3b) or the calcium-phospholipid-dependent kinase (P-450 PB 1a, PB 2a, MC 1a, LM 3c, and LM 4).
