1H-, 13C-, and 15N-NMR and ESI-TOF+ MS studies of a supramolecular complex of silver(I) and a cholaphane
2003
A novel application of the mixed anhydride procedure for synthesising lithocholic acid piperazine diamide, an important intermediate in designing bile acid-based supramolecular host molecules, is reported. The synthesis of a thiophene-containing cholaphane with transition metal complexation ability and 1H-, 13C-, and 15N-NMR as well as ESI-TOF+ MS spectral characterisation of the ligand and its Ag(I) complex are included. The coordination of the Ag(I) ion as well as an ability of the cholaphane to recognise Ag(I) ion over alkali metal ions, especially potassium ion, is discussed. The possible medical applications are also presented.
Systematic Modulation of the Supramolecular Gelation Properties of Bile Acid Alkyl Amides
2018
The self-assembly properties of nine low-molecular-weight gelators (LMWGs) based on bile acid alkyl amides were studied in detail. Based on the results, the number of hydroxyl groups attached to the steroidal backbone plays a major role in the gelation, although the nature of the aliphatic side chain also modulates the gelation abilities. Of the 50 gel systems studied, 35 are based on lithocholic acid and 15 on cholic acid derivatives. The deoxycholic acid derivatives did not form any gels. The gelation occurred primarily in aromatic solvents and the gels manifested typical fibrous or spherical morphologies. The 13C cross-polarized magic angle spinning (CPMAS) NMR spectra measured on the cr…
Supramolecular architectures formed by co-crystallization of bile acids and melamine
2010
Supramolecular multicomponent crystals constructed from three different bile acids (viz. lithocholic, deoxycholic and cholic acid) and melamine have been prepared and the non-covalent interactions in the crystals studied. Both salts and co-crystals were found. While deoxycholic and cholic acid co-crystallized with melamine as a 1 : 1 isostructural molecular complexes in space group C2, lithocholic acid formed with melamine a 2 : 1 molecular complex in space group P21. This is the first report on a multicomponent crystal structure containing lithocholic acid.
Luminescent supramolecular heterometallic macrocycles and their encapsulation on cholate gels
2018
The metal complex formed by coordination of Zn(II) to 1,7-bis(4-methylpyridine)-4-(2- naphthylmethyl)-1,4,7-triazaheptane (ZnL2+) was reacted in aqueous solution with [Pd(NO3)2(en)] and [Pt(NO3)2(en)] salts to form the self-assembled heterometallic macrocycles [Zn2L2Pd2(en)2]8+ and [Zn2L2Pt2(en)2]8+, respectively. Pd(II) and Pt(II)- coordination modulates the original emission of ZnL2+ arising from the presence of the naphthalene chromophore and the formation of the macrocycles can be monitored due to the PET process occurring with coordination of Pd(II) and Pt(II) to the pyridine units of ZnL2+. Additionally, several studies reveal that these heteromacrocycles can be encapsulated in Zn(II)…
Coordination networks incorporating halogen-bond donor sites and azobenzene groups
2016
Two Zn coordination networks, {[Zn(1)(Py)2]2(2-propanol)}n (3) and {[Zn(1)2(Bipy)2](DMF)2}n (4), incorporating halogen-bond (XB) donor sites and azobenzene groups have been synthesized and fully characterized. Obtaining 3 and 4 confirms that it is possible to use a ligand wherein its coordination bond acceptor sites and XB donor sites are on the same molecular scaffold (i.e., an aromatic ring) without interfering with each other. We demonstrate that XBs play a fundamental role in the architectures and properties of the obtained coordination networks. In 3, XBs promote the formation of 2D supramolecular layers, which, by overlapping each other, allow the incorporation of 2-propanol as a gues…
A modular "toolbox" approach to flexible branched multimacrocyclic hosts as precursors for multiply interlocked architectures.
2008
Tetralactam macrocycles can be functionalized by a variety of cross-coupling reactions. A modular “toolbox” strategy is presented that allows 1) several tetralactam macrocycles to be covalently connected with each other or with a central spacer, 2) the macrocycles to be substituted with or connected to different chromophores, and 3) metal-coordination sites to be attached to the macrocycles. With this approach a series of different oligo-macrocyclic hosts was obtained with great structural diversity and enormous potential for further functionalization. Rotaxanes made on the basis of these macrocycles have been synthesized to demonstrate their utility in building more complex supramolecular …
Supramolecular assembly of functional peptide-polymer conjugates.
2019
The following review gives an overview about synthetic peptide-polymer conjugates as macromolecular building blocks and their self-assembly into a variety of supramolecular architectures, from supramolecular polymer chains, to anisotropic 1D arrays, 2D layers, and more complex 3D networks. A selection of recent literature examples using linear, coiled-coil and cyclic peptide motifs is provided. The reversible nature of the unimer-to-supramolecular polymer transition provides unique opportunities to investigate mechanistic aspects of the supramolecular assembly, with respect to the thermodynamic or kinetic parameters and furthermore provides exciting opportunities for non-equilibrium assembl…

2005
Self-assembly of hyperbranched polyethylenimine (PEI) and fatty acids leads to supramolecular inverted micellar structures that are able to irreversibly transfer water-soluble guest molecules into organic solvents. Perez Prieto, Julia, Julia.Perez@uv.es ; Stiriba, Salah Eddine, Salah.Stiriba@uv.es
Spectral and microscopic study of self-assembly of novel cationic spermine amides of betulinic acid
2016
Supramolecular characteristics of two spermine amides of betulinic acid (1 and 2) were studied by measuring and evaluating their UV-VIS-NIR spectra in aqueous acetonitrile and DOSY-NMR spectra in tetradeuteromethanol, accompanied by atomic force microscopy (AFM) images, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) micrographs, and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) micrographs. Fibrous supramolecular self-assembly of 1 and 2 was observed by AFM images, as well as by the SEM and TEM micrographs. Bathochromic shifts of the absorbance maximum at 870nm to 1015-970nm in the UV-VIS-NIR spectra were observed with increasing water content in the acetonitrile/water systems, indicating formation of fibrous…
SUPRAMOLECULAR ASSOCIATION OF RECOMBINANT HUMAN GROWTH HORMONE WITH HYDROPHOBIZED POLYHYDROXYETHYLASPARTAMIDES
2008
Abstract The protein delivery properties of polymer supramolecular assemblies were investigated by using recombinant human growth hormone (rh-GH) and two polyhydroxyethylaspartamide (PHEA) derivatives: (a) PHEA-C 16 obtained by PHEA random grafting with hexadecylalkylamine; (b) PHEA-PEG 5000 -C 16 obtained by PHEA random co-grafting with hexadecylalkylamine and 5 kDa poly(ethylene glycol). The two polymers possessed similar self-assembling properties: critical micelle concentration (CMC) and particle size. The protein loading (protein/polymer, w/w, %) was 12.1 ± 1.3% and 8.5 ± 0.4% with PHEA-C 16 and PHEA-PEG 5000 -C 16 , respectively. The rh-GH/polymer association constant calculated by Sc…
