Szkic z dziejów leksykografii dwujęzycznej: Paweł Sobolewski i jego Słownik angielsko-polski… (1840)

This article focuses on Paweł Sobolewski’s manuscript dictionary, Słownik angielsko- polski… (1840), which his biographers allege was lost during shipment from America to Europe. However, part of the manuscript embracing the alphabet range B‒E is held at the archive of the Polish Library in Paris, thus allowing the author to discuss facts and myths concerning the dictionary, and make an attempt at its assessment. Much attention is paid in the paper to Sobolewski’s biography, which may be illustrated and partly verified with the extant correspondence.

Słownik gwar Śląskich [Dictionary of Silesian Dialects] contains vocabulary from all of the region’s dialects. The dictionary is based on rich lexical materiał, which has been collected sińce the 1950s. The first volume was published in 2000, sińce then thirteen volumes have appeared (containing vocabulary starting with letters from A to J). The core of the materiał is constituted by 20th-eentury vocabulary; however, there are many components of older origin. Autor wychodzi z założenia, że istota polskości kondensuje się w języku (polskim) i w stworzonych w nim tekstach, z systemu języka więc i z tekstów może zostać odtworzona, a następnie przedstawiona w postaci definicji. Dotychczasowe definicje konceptu polskość w słownikach języka polskiego nic nie mówią o składowych tego konceptu. Autor proponuje metody ekscerpcji cech składowych polskości z tekstów różnych gatunków oraz ramę definicji syntetycznej, w którą te wyekscerpowane cechy powinny być w przyszłości wbudowane.

This article focuses on the place that proper names originating from rock, or popular music in general, take or could take in dictionaries of proper names. It starts with an overview of onomástica published thus far, revealing a limited interest of Polish researchers in proper nouns related to this form of artistic activity. This discovery prompted the author to share his suggestions regarding such an onomasticon, or even onomástica, where names from popular music and specific categories would take a central place. Tytuły utworów literackich, muzycznych, malarskich czy filmowych należą do zbioru nazw własnych, których główną funkcją jest identyfikowanie poszczególnych obiektów (dzieł sztuki). Tym samym tytuły należą do klasy reproduktów, gdyż w tekstach muszą być reprodukowane w ustalonej dla danego języka formie. Tworzy to istotny problem dla tłumaczy, zwłaszcza w przekładzie tekstów, które zawierają w sobie tytuły. The aim of the article is to show how to list and develop phraseology in the oldest Polish dialect dictionary: A Dictionary of Polish Dialects by Jan Karłowicz, and then discuss the placement of phraseology in the macro- and microstructure of later, 20th century selected dialectal dictionaries. Therefore, the article is an overview of the tradition of lexical development and study of phraseology in dialectal dictionaries (on the example of Silesian Dialect Dictionary, Polish Dialects Dictionary by Polish Academy of Sciences, the dictionary of Bernard Sychta, Dictionary of Ostróda, Warmia and Mazury Dialects).

The aim of this article is to research the ways of developing phraseology and its emplacement into the macro- and microstructure in selected dialectal dictionaries (academic and popular). The first part is an overview of the phraseology, as included in introductions to the dictionaries. This paper looks at the rich, and largely unexplored, correspondence of Jan Józef Baranowski, an insurgent in the November Uprising, a refugee in France and England, an accomplished inventor and the author of a two-volume bilingual dictionary (Anglo-Polish lexicon, 1883; Słownik polsko-angielski, 1884). Baranowski’s letters, primarily those addressed to Leonard Niedźwiedzki, allow one to investigate both his lexicographic conceptions and working methods. As it has turned out, the design of his dictionary was innovative, but Baranowski had experience neither in lexicography nor foreign language teaching.
