Guest-Host Systems of 1,3,5-Tristyrylbenzenes
2003
(E,E,E)-1,3,5-Tris(3,4,5-trimethoxystyryl)benzene (1a) forms monoclinic crystals of the space group P21/c. Incorporation of three transoid diacetyl guest molecules between the three arms leads to triclinic crystals of the space group P1. The styryl groups, originally present in a nonsymmetrical conformation, are simultaneously transformed to a C3 arrangement. (E,E,E)-1,3,5-Tris- (3,4,5-tripropoxystyryl)benzene (1b) forms monoclinic crystals of the space group P21/c. The C3 arrangement of the styryl groups is present in the first, the unsymmetrical arrangement in the second modification. Incorporation of two acetone guests in the largest and the middle-sized angle space between the styryl ar…
ChemInform Abstract: New Polymorph of InVO4: A High-Pressure Structure with Six-Coordinated Vanadium.
2014
High-pressure XRD and Raman spectroscopy on orthorhombic InVO4 (space group Cmcm, Z = 4) reveal the existence of a new wolframite-type polymorph of InVO4 near 7 GPa.

Portable non invasive analyses for Cultural Heritage
2014
The requirements that the scientific analyses for Cultural Heritage must have are: nondestructive and noninvasive, multielemental, sensitive, reliable and sufficiently rapid, able to carry out measurements in situ on objects of all types, and to deduce information practically on-line. Among the techniques that fulfill these requirements we find: multispectral imaging, portable EDXRF, Raman and UV-VIS-NIR spectrometry. In this paper we are going to show some cases in which it will appear clear the necessity of the correct order with which applying the non invasive techniques and what data of each of them it is necessary to understand in situ to obtain the maximum of the subsequent scientific…
A Fatty Acid Based Bayesian Approach for Inferring Diet in Aquatic Consumers
2015
We modified the stable isotope mixing model MixSIR to infer primary producer contributions to consumer diets based on their fatty acid composition. To parameterize the algorithm, we generated a 'consumer-resource library' of FA signatures of Daphnia fed different algal diets, using 34 feeding trials representing diverse phytoplankton lineages. This library corresponds to the resource or producer file in classic Bayesian mixing models such as MixSIR or SIAR. Because this library is based on the FA profiles of zooplankton consuming known diets, and not the FA profiles of algae directly, trophic modification of consumer lipids is directly accounted for. To test the model, we simulated hypothet…
Codominance of Lactobacillus plantarum and obligate heterofermentative lactic acid bacteria during sourdough fermentation
2015
Fifteen sourdoughs produced in western Sicily (southern Italy) were analysed by classical methods for their chemico-physical characteristics and the levels of lactic acid bacteria (LAB). pH and total titratable acidity (TTA) were mostly in the range commonly reported for similar products produced in Italy, but the fermentation quotient (FQ) of the majority of samples was above 4.0, due to the low concentration of acetic acid estimated by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Specific counts of LAB showed levels higher than 10(8) CFU g(-1) for many samples. The colonies representing various morphologies were isolated and, after the differentiation based on phenotypic characteristics…
A multiplex RTi-PCR reaction for simultaneous detection of Escherichia coli O157:H7, Salmonella spp. and Staphylococcus aureus on fresh, minimally pr…
2007
In this work, a new multiplex single-tube real-time PCR approach is presented for the detection of Escherichia coli O157:H7, Salmonella spp. and Staphylococcus aureus, three of the more frequent food-borne bacterial pathogens that are usually investigated in a variety of food matrices. The study includes the design and specificity testing, of a new primer and probe specific for Salmonella spp. Reaction conditions were adjusted for the simultaneous amplification and detection of specific fragments in the beta-glucuronidase (uidA, E. coli) and Thermonulease (nuc, Sta. aureus) genes, and in the replication origin sequence (oriC, Salmonella spp.). Melting-curve analysis using a SYBR Green I RTi…
Comparison of Four Commercial DNA Extraction Kits for PCR Detection of Listeria monocytogenes, Salmonella, Escherichia coli O157:H7, and Staphylococc…
2008
Four commercial DNA extraction methods, PrepMan Ultra (Applied Biosystems), InstaGene Matrix (BioRad), DNeasy Tissue kit (Qiagen), and UltraClean (MoBio), were tested for PCR detection of Listeria monocytogenes, Escherichia coli O157: H7, Salmonella, and Staphylococcus aureus in fresh, minimally processed vegetables. For comparative purposes, sensitivity assays with specific PCRs were carried out after DNA extraction with the four methods in green pepper, broccoli, and onion artificially inoculated with the four pathogens separately. As confirmed by statistical analysis, the DNeasy Tissue kit rendered the highest sensitivity values in the three matrices assayed for Salmonella, L. monocytoge…
